I'm coverstitching a piece of fabric with elastic attached. Stitch is perfect but when it comes to a joined seam, I get about 2" of no stitch then stitches beautifully again. I have tried just about everything and can't figure out the issue. I even tried a slightly lighter weight fabric, no issues. Thank you

your machine is a high speed dress machine. You can pick up a walking foot

I have a difficult problem with my DDL 555. It has started sewing backward. Forward (reverse lever up) sews backward and in reverse (reverse lever down) is sews forward. I have had it for a very long time and have never had problems servicing it (replaced bobbin carrier, replaced tension unit, etc.) and making all adjustments with no problems, but I am absolutely stumped here. Can you offer any advise?

| Some how you have reversed the polarity on the motor
In stead of the motor going counter clock ways. It is going clock wise The hand wheel is going away from you. There should be a reverse dial on the back of the motor. Make sure the motor is off and completely run down before changing it.

Hi! I am sorry to bother you with this, I don't know where else to turn for an answer. I have the instruction manual, there is no information on this.
My question: to wind the bobbin, (I know how to put the bobbin on the side of the machine and put the thread in) :
What other steps should be taken before pushing the foot pedal? How do I stop the machine from "sewing"?
I would be so grateful for this information. I already know how to wind a bobbin while the machine is sewing, but not how to just plain wind a bobbin by itself.

| There is a leaver on the bobbin winder you must move forward. This makes the wheel on the bobbin winder
engage the belt. On a industrial machine you can not stop the needle from going up and down.
The idea is to sew and wind another bobbin at the same time.
You can unthread the needle so you do not jam up the machine if you want to wind with out sewing

| Dear Erin,
Make sure the needle is in the machine correctly- all the way up into the needle bar, make sure that it is threaded correctly, etc. If this all checks out ok, take the bobbin case out of the machine. There are two ears on either side of the bobbin case- turn the left one to the left and the right one to the right. Remove the silver ring, and inspect the piece of metal that the ring came off of (looks like a circle with the top cut off). You have to locate the hook which is the piece that looks like a half moon inside the big round metal piece. Locate the tip of it, turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is in the lowest position, at this point the tip of the hook should be flush with top of the left side of the cut off circle. If this is not so, your machine needs to be re-timed. If that is the case, I would need to see a picture of the bottom of the machine so that I am able to determine what needs adjusting.

Go through the easy stuff first:
Make sure the needle is in correctly with the flat side to the rear of the machine, make sure to thread the upper and lower portions of the machine correctly. If this does not solve your problem, please respond.

When you remove your bobbin case, bobbin, and two extra pieces, the piece that is left in the machine has a spring around it. Check to see if the spring is broken.

Check the easy stuff first:
Make sure the needle is inserted in the machine properly- a good rule of thumb is the flat side of the needle should go to the opposite side of the last thread guide. Also make sure the machine is threaded correctly. If all checks out ok, e-mail me back.

I have a relatively new Singer Model 9920. I have been using it a LOT since January. Just recently, it's started stopping or not starting at all when I press the foot pedal. I will be stiching along, and it will stop. I unplug the foot pedal and plug it back in... and it starts again. Now, however, it won't start at all. | Dear Pam,
You either need a transduecer (speed control inside the machine, part number 988549-002 available on www.sewingandvac.com, or you need a new foot control, part number 988667 ,also available on www.sewingandvac.com. It is also possible that you may need both.
If you take the foot control tube and put your finger over the hole in the tube, compress the controler and hold it for about 5 seconds, remove your finger and if there is still compression inside the tube, you need the transduecer. If there is no compression, you need the foot control. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Hi, I'm faily new to sewing but I was given a Singer Quantum XL-1 by my aunt. It worked fine till I got my hands on it. Basically the threading needle won't go up or down. And turning the hand wheel won't make the needle go up or down either. It's like it's stuck there or a part came out that enabled the threading needle to go up and down. How do I fix this?

Either your bobbin thread is too tight which would have been caused by you adjusting it. If you did not try to adjust it, you are either threading the top of the machine incorrectly or the top tension was inadvertantly lowered too much. Hope this helps.

| It sounds like you played around with the tension. If you did, you are going to have to either loosen the bottom tension or tighten the top tension- or even do a combination of both. It all depends on how much the tension was adjusted.

I just purchased the 2 in 1 mini sewing machine for camping or really quick jobs. The problem is, it sews backwards when I push the on button... giving me no stitches. But when I use the handwheel, I get stitches. Have you ever heard of such a thing? There is no reverse on this little machine. How can I go about fixing this?

| The only way that the machine would be doing that is if the polarity on the motor somehow got reversed. You don't want to play around with that.

Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I have a Singer Touch and Sew Model 648 that I usually use the knee pedal to sew with. Lately, it has been getting real sluggish and I would help it by using hand wheel while pressing knee pedal. I thought maybe the spring or lever needed to be lubricated but when I tried to put it down and use as foot pedal it will not go at all. Could this just be the foot pedal? My sewing machine is less than a year old. It's a kenmore 16227. I have problems with the needle picking up bobin thread and when it does I get uneven stitches. A few stitches will be perfect and then it skips a few and sometimes it returns to normal other times the top thread just breaks. To my knowledge I'm using the right needle, and the right foot. | Look to see if the drop feed is off. Look inside the bobbin case area. Look for the drop feed button/dial/bar. Make sure that it is in the up position. If it is not in the up position, put it in the up position. If it is in the up position, you will need to lift the feed dog and will need a mechanic.

| Dear Annie,
Thread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button to the right. Begin to start the machine. After about five seconds of running the machine, stop, unwrap the thread from the screw, and remove it from the machine and continue to run the machine. You will note that the bobbin is winding. When you have wound enough thread onto the bobbin, stop the machine, shut the bobbin case slide door, and begin to sew.
I do suggest that you have an instruction manual for just such purposes. There are many other "quirks" that can be explained through the manual. Part # SR-758. We have these available at www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95.

I just invested in 2 dozen new touch & sew bobbins for my 40 year old Singer Model 600E. I cannot get them to fill using the directions I have followed for over 40 years. Is this just a defective package where both bobbins won't work or should I try opening more packages? If the new ones won't work at all, where can I find some old ones?

| Clunking Machine
My mother has a Singer 1036 sewing machine..... I think it is the gears I haven't gotten it torn down that far..... it sounds alot like clunk-pe-clump-rrrrr. It still sews and of course needs a tune up I just want to be 100% that I am on the right track... I have been trained in older machines & even though this one is 35 years old it's newer to me.... Is there a mechanic information that I can get from you or somewhere???? I really would be able to show Mom I can fix the ol' girl This is a hobby I do enjoy..... | If the machine is still sewing, the gears are not the problem. It sounds more like a motor problem to me. Take the bottom of the machine off and inspect where the adjusting screw is. You need a new motor mount. Part number 604228-001 and is available on www.sewingandvac.com.

I have a Singer Touch & Sew 758, the tension is too loose, and when sewing I can hear the bobbin case making a noise. I took the bobbin case out and cleaned it like the book said, but the case seems to be really loose. Can you help me please?

There are two things that you have to look at. With the bobbin case visible, looking straight down at it while thinking of it as the face of a clock, at 4:00 there is a black metal position finger. It is probably bent. You need to spread the spring to decrease the distance between the bobbin case and the edge of the position finger. Now, in doing, so, most people break the little finger off- so be careful.
The second thing that you look at is the position finger in the 10:00 position. To adjust that position finger, you want to let the bobbin case lay in it's groove and push it to the left against that position finger. The cutout should be at 6:00 when pressing against the 10:00 position. This will take up all of the space inside the machine. You do need a space in between the 4:00 position finger and the bobbin case- the distance should be about the distance of two matchbook covers.

My name is Crystal and i have a Singer zig-zag sewing machine/model 457. I have the instruction booklet and the machine is threaded correctly i hve checked 5 times. i have rethreaded both the bobbin and the needle thred several times and when i put the needle down it will not bring up the bobbin thread. And since it isn't working together with the bobbin thread it wont make a stitch on the fabric. | Machine Barely Turns to Sew
This issue is from my sister who lives in another state. She called to see if I could help and so far I haven't. She said the machine runs fine to thread bobbin but then will barely turn to sew. It is a Singer and the bobbin drops in from the top and will only go one way so we ruled out that being the problem. She says it isn't the belt.

I have a singer Model 758. It seems to work fine. I have the manual and have read the directions.
The setting seem to be all correct, the bobbin is threaded correctly. It sews fine for about 12-24 inches and then gets caught in the bobbin area. any suggestions? It does need to be cleaned and the soft touch feed seems to be sticky. can it be replaced? and how do I clean it? where can I find part for this?

Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I have bought a secondhand Husqvarna model 6020.
It looks in a very good condition, very clean inside.
But for some reason it will only sew in reverse!
There is no intruction book with it, but I have found a knob with an arrow on it and can pull this in and out, is that for the reverse?
But It does not make any change pulling it in or out!
Can not find any broken gears inside.

I started having trouble all of a sudden with what appears to be bobbin tension problem. Machine was sewing fine, then began bunching up thread underneath. Was sewing on a lightweight fabric. I'm sorry, I'm some what of a beginner, Now when I'm sewing very thin marital on my machine, I can't get it to work. I tried to make the tension both high and low, still nothing. I can't remember what I used to do on my other machine so I feel stuck. For a little while it was at least catching a little- now that has stop and the thread is not catching at all-

I bought a Touch and Sew 620 Singer at a yard sale that was supposed to be working, but it will not make the first stitch. At first, the machine wouldn’t even move because the bobbin case was bound by the rear tab that holds it in place, so I bent it up slightly to allow the machine to run, now it seems to run fine with the needle moving up and down, the dogs feed material, but it will not make a stitch. Take the top lid off and inspect inside to see what is physically stopping it from turning. It is more than likely that the bobbin winder is too stiff to turn or the rubber ring that turns the spindle is missing- it may have disintegrated. If stiffness is the problem, use small amounts of oil to free the bobbin winder up- gently turning the bobbin spindle. Do NOT use force. If it is the rubber ring, order the ring, (we have them available on www.sewingandvac.com) and replace it.

| New Machine Won't Move!
You are going to tell me I should have opened my new machine right away to see if it worked, but life (or death) situations happen and I couldn't even look at it until last week (Bought it in November).
So, I finally get it out, thread it, plug everything in, step on the foot pedal and it barely moves. On my 30 yr old Singer(that I just sold at a garage sale) , I would have to turn the wheel on the side to get it to go; but doing that to the new one doesn't help at all. After looking at the pictures, it looks like it could be a model 6550.
Is there one simple thing I am not doing that will make the foot pedal run the machine.

| You have to make sure that the needle is in the proper way, it is threaded correctly, and the bobbin case is inserted correctly. Singer Featherweight 221 machines do not go out of time. I assure you that your machine is not damaged and not out time. Just check the things that I have suggested and service your machine, ie. oil and clean it up.

| Motor Gets Hot on my Singer 5050
I have a Singer sewing machine model 5050, purchased new January 2001 at Walmart. I have used it regularly without problems, lubricated it regularly, etc. Yesterday I was doing a lot of straight line sewing and the motor began humming a different tune! The housing enclosing the motor felt really warm-hot and when I began to smell a distinct burning odor, I turned it off. Several hours later I returned to the machine to see if it was okay. I was able to do straight-line sewing with no hum or odor, however NOW my zig-zag function isn't working! Did I burn up some module that operates the zig-zag arm? Is it economically repairable? I only paid $150 five years ago, would I be better off to purchase a new one? Thank you for your input.

| It sounds to me as if your machine needs to be serviced. The reason that motors get hot is because the it is laboring too hard because the machine does not have enough lubrication in the correct spots or there is thread wrapped on something.

| Always Straight Stitch?

I have a Kenmore 15212 that is about a year and a half old that I have used moderately. I got it out, and discovered that it suddenly only stitches a straight stitch no matter what stitch pattern I select. I took off the casing, and the stitch selection knob moves fine, and the first gear behind it is working OK. (As the stitch selection is moved, it moves through gears that look like they are for a 10 speed). I did not feel satisfied with the way some of the other gears never moved, but can't find a drawing of what those parts are called, or a manual that says what they SHOULD be doing. The stitch width control is suddenly not working either, and the needle is to the far left, and when I adjust it to straight stitch in the center, it does not move to the right but becomes like a "loose pendilum". I can't find the receipt, and would like to learn more about sewing machine mechanics anyway. Did one of my kids drop it, or did I buy a cheap machine? I would really appreciate your comments.

Take the lid off and spray the cam stack area with a little bit of WD40 and let the mist settle as to not create the possibility of a fire or explosion, and heat that area with a hair dryer. Be patient. Move the dials back and forth and your machine will be fine.

I have a Bernette 80e. Last night while sewing the thread got knotted in the fabric and wouldn't move. I cut the thread and pulled the rest from the machine. After that my bobbin won't work. The needle moves up and down but the bobbin is not catching.
I removed the face plate according to instruction and cleaned the area, and replaced the bobbin. It still doesn't work. Can you give me any ideas how to fix this.

| If it doesn't happen every single time you use the machine, the problem is on the user end. You are either pulling or pushing the fabric too much. If it does happen every time, your machine needs to be adjusted.

| Thread Breaks in Reverse
I have an old Singer 99-31 that was a graduation present to my mother in 1954. I have used it for many years and it has been a great machine. The problem I am having is that when I put the machine in reverse it breaks the top thread. I sent it in for this same problem several weeks ago and it has been fine since I got it back until today. It was just cleaned, oiled, etc and sews beautifully if I keep it only going forward. To my knowledge nothing has "happened" that would suddenly make it do this again. Unfortunately I have no idea what the problem was or what was done to it the last time I sent it in to have it fixed. I can't afford to send it back in. Please help. Thanks for your help. Suzanne

| Works in Zig Zag, But Not Straight Stitch?!
I tried to get help from the seller on Ebay, I bought this machine new, several weeks later and used only 3 times, the upper thread would not grab the bobbin thread. no stiches, but the machine ran. this was 'A' in straight stiches, changed to 'b' it worked , only in zig zag, why? can you please help me

I have got it stiching streight correctly--I think!! It looks good. But none of the stiches that require zig-zag are catching. It makes the zig-zag motion- but, the stiching is still streight--it does'nt pick up the stich. Is it the timing?

| Bobbin Winder Won't Wind
Hello.
Thank you for all the great information on your website!
However, I did not see an answer for my particular problem.
I have a Singer Model 9020 (tabletop model with no case, cupboard, or stand) that is almost 10 years old, and has often sat unloved in the closet. Currently, I have been using it a lot more. Since taking it out of the closet this last time, it has consistently had the same problem.
While everything else seems to be working fine, the bobbin winder won't wind. From the sounds it makes, obviously power is getting to the system, and the needle is no longer going up and down when I switch to winding the bobbin, so obviously the switching system is fine.
My neighbor is a quilter, and had a look at it. She suggested that I ask a repair person about it, to see if I can fix it myself (considering that the repair costs for this model could be as much as a new one of this model). She thought it needed either a cleaning or a new belt.
If either one, can I do it myself and how?

Try to spin the bobbin winder spindle with your fingers. If it is very very tight, that is why it is not winding. You would need to take the top of the machine off, oil the bobbin winder, and gently turn it until it frees up. Be VERY careful not to get oil on the handwheel or the rubber ring on the bobbin winder.

| Problems with Partially Wound Bobbins
Hi, I seem to have a problem when putting a partially wound bobbin in the machine! The thread stays over the bobbin when the thread is pulled through the plate. When I rewind a empty bobbin the thread doesn't do that and the machine runs fine. It just seems to do this with a partially filled bobbin. I tried cleaning it the best I could but do not understand how to remove the bobbin case. Do I need a pro, to replace the bobbin case? Thank you for your time. This is a GREAT site! Thanks Grace

You really have to tug the thread. Put it through number 1 in the bobbin case, drag towards the right towards number 2, and give it a hard tug past number 2. This should eliminate the problem. If it doesn't, you will need adjustments on the position finger. In my opinion, if the machine runs perfectly when winding a new bobbin, I would just wind a new bobbin instead of trying to wind a partially wound one.

Hello,
I have a Singer CG 590 that is seven months old and was purchased brand spanking new. It hasn't been used all that much until the last couple of months. It will sew very fast so I have adjusted the speed on the foot pedal down but it doesn't sew as well. The stitches it is making seem to be fine, it's the performance that is the problem. What it's doing now is humming louder than what I remember it doing at first when the foot pedal is engaged. It is also "stalling" meaning that the needle will remain in the up position but the machine will hum. I am having to slightly turn the hand wheel to get it unstuck. I have cleaned around the feed dogs and lightly oiled it (didn't take the machine completely apart). I hope it's something I can repair or remedy myself if not we've got a good service center in our area.

| Loose Stitches on Bottom
Dear industrial sewing machine man,, Sorry I was so vague. The setting that the machine will sew the best stitch on is all the way down to + and even then it is not an even stitch. The stitches are loose on the bottom and uneven. I have put the bobbin in correctly, I think. Also it makes a clunky noise-sounds really bad. Hope that explains it a little better. You are threading the top of the machine incorrectly. Re-thread the top of your machine very carefully.
Since you cannot see the tension disks, you cannot see if the thread is actually in them which makes it easy to mis-thread the top of the machine. Here is a little test that will tell you whether you are threading the machine correctly or not before you begin to sew: First, put your tension back on auto (or 4, whichever is more appropriate), take the thread from the spool to the first thread guide, then straight down, around the tension and back up and then start the thread going downwards again towards the needle. At this point, slowly pull the thread and continue to pull as you lower the presser foot. If you feel a change in tension, you have threaded the machine CORRECTLY, if there is no change, the disks were missed and you will have to re-thread the machine. Hope this helps.

Looking down at the bobbin case, you will see that in the four to eight o'clock area there is a metal piece embedded in the plastic circle of the bobbin case. Looking at the eight o'clock side, separate the metal piece from the plastic piece by using a small screw driver or a knive (dull). Separate the metal from the plastic to the distance of about a matchbook. Try to wind the bobbin. If you are successful, congratulations. If not, make the distance between the metal and the plastic a little larger.

| I Was Sewing Polypropelene....
Hi, I have a Janome New Home 532. I was sewing polypropelene fabric when some loose strands got stuck in the wheel. I couldn't get everything out
and the machine was sewing somewhat heavily, so I removed the wheel entirely. Apparently, there is no easy way to remove the rod which the wheel turns around. I removed the top and still couldn't see a solution. I unscrewed the part that joins the top mechanism with the bottom mechanism, in hopes that the rod would come loose. It didn't, so I put everything back, or so I thought; the machine now makes a loud noise with every stitch. The stitches come out as fine as they ever have, but the machine is now heavier than ever. | Slight Offset?
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
Yesterday I received a used Viking 6430 that I took a chance with on eBay. All in all the machine looks unabused and in great condition, though not used in a while judging by the dry grease on some parts inside. I cleaned and oiled it the best I could, freed up the button hole knob, and it works and stitches nicely. The tension is good. I plan to do a better job on it
when I receive the service manual I ordered. The Viking operating manual has virtually no information in it about lubrication, unlike my wife's old Singer Touch and Sew 620!
One thing I have noticed though is that the straight stitch has *slightly* more offset to it than I am used to from my old Singer. The stitch width is definitely set to 0. Is this an adjustment issue? Alignment issue? Just the nature of the Viking? Oh and one other thing: the feed dogs are not quite centered in the slots in the plate, they hug the right. Should I be
centering them?
I'm not that picky a sewer--I make my own backpacks, and outdoor clothing--but I do like to have things look right, plus I want to make sure
this great machine works properly.

What do you mean when you say slight offset? If you mean that there is a slight zig zag, that adjustment is on the buttonhole on the back of the
machine.
You should center your feed dogs by adjusting the bed of the machine.

Yes, you will have to remove the back panel. Once the panel is removed,
look down into the machine on the right hand side- it is the ONLY screw head
that you will see standing upwards. Adjust it.

I believe I found the screw in question--it was on a little cam-like part
operated by the stitch width/buttonhole knob. But adjusting it hasn't done
it. If I loosened that screw enough, I began to see real zig zag in my
straight stitch. I then tightened it back. I realized that what I'm seeing
in my stitches isn't a zig zag (I don't think), but more of a misalignment?
The holes of the stitches actually line up, which I can see plainly if I run
some with no thread . The issue is more that the thread seems to start off
to the side of the end of one stitch as it heads to the next hole. I've
enclosed a picture of the stitching.
I notice that two of the teeth on the front of the feed dog on one side have
been flattened, I guess by the presser foot at some point--relevant?

Make sure that you are not confusing a slight zig zag with a needle that is running thread to thread on the grain of the material. If in fact the needle is moving side to side, it is the adjustment that I e-mailed about prior. Let me know.

No, it doesn't look like the needle is moving side to side. The holes generally are in a straight line, but the appearance of the line of stitching is of small waves. I've inserted the picture below:

I'm thinking if it is anything, perhaps it is a feed problem? As I mentioned, two of the teeth on the front of the right side feed dog have
been flattened. Is that enough to cause a problem? I adjusted the dogs so that they were centered in the needle plate tracks better, and am now a little worried that I might have altered their motion (though the stitches have been as described since before I messed with the dogs). The tops of the dogs teeth are not parallel with the needle plate through their whole motion--they are slanted front up to back, so that they appear at the back of the track first and the front last, and they are never as high above the plate in the front as they are in the back. On our Singer, they come out of the slots parallel and pretty much stay that way.

| Directions in Reverse
I have a Kenmore 385.16524000 that I had bought from Sears a few years ago. It started to sound a bit noisy and sluggish so I figured it needed a good greasing/oiling. Having let my warranty expire due to the warranty cost being almost as much as a new machine, and my not being too mechanically inclined, I asked my husband if he could take on the task. Little did I know....
Three hours later with two re-assemble tries due to "extra screws" and a ball of fuzzy material dust bunnies later, my husband announces he is done. Eager to get back to my sewing, I find to my dismay that upon depressing the foot control, my machine sews in reverse. When I hold the reverse stitch control lever, my machine sews forward. Somewhere along the way, the feed dogs feed the material contrary to the controls. My settings are all okay: straight stitch, width 3, length 3, tension 3.... I tried neutralizing everything. I've searched the internet and I know it's not "frozen in reverse" being it sews both forward and reverse, just in reverse order.
My husband insists all he did was remove the plastic covers, brush away "a ton of built up lint" with the supplied lint brush but if that is so, a little gremlin somewhere did something I'm hoping you can help me undo. Sure I could tape the reverse switch down but I fear that will harm my machine even more. Please help! I have a lot of work to catch up on.

| Foot Pedal on Fire, Maybe?
I have a singer 500 that I used all the time, recently when I sew I hear a popping noise, kind of like an electrical pop, when I pull the cord out of the machine and the wall the popping stops, but then I smell electrical smell and the foot pedal is really hot. Do you know if I need a new foot pedal? Is it a short somewhere in the pedal, is it on fire when I sew? Also, the number on the bottom of mine is 625299-01
This is the only machine I have, what could be the noise or is the foot pedal the problem?

I found some guy on ebay who swears to me that this new EZ Foot would fit my machine, and he would put a cord on it and include S&H for only $32.98, but then he said if is doesn't fit my machine he wouldn't accept returns....so I am wondering would the cord and pedal that you have fit the machine?

| Is a Belt Wearing Out or Something?
I have a basic Kenmore sewing machine. I have had it about 5 years, but I sew all the time on it. The last time I tried to sew on it the handwheel
was hard to turn. The machine sews fine besides that the handwheel is hard to turn. I oiled and cleaned it, but that didn't help. I am not sure how to open up the casing to look at the motor and belts. Can you explain this? Is the belt wearing out or is it something else?

My needle will not pick up the bobbin thread. I was sewing and the machine jammed. When I tried to sew again…no stitches, only holes in the fabric. Then I tried to start all over by rethreading, new bobbin, etc. That was when I realized that the needle was not picking up the bobbin. Is there something in the bobbin casing that broke off? MY MOTHER HAS A SINGER SEWING MACHINE SHE BOUGHT. SOMETHING HAPPENED WHEN SHE WAS SEWING A CERTAIN TYPE OF MATERIAL. IT SEEMS NOW WHEN SHE SEWS THE NEEDLE BREAKS OFF BECASUE THE NEEDLE DOES NOT MATCH THE GROOVE IN THE PART THAT SITS UNDER THE BOOBIN.
UPON OPENING THE BOBBIN LATCH AND REMOVING I GUESS WHAT'S CALLED THE BOBBIN HOUSING THE PART THAT THE BOOBIN HOUSING SITS ON HITS THE NEEDLE AND BREAKS IT.
I TOLD MY MOTHER IT LOOKS AS IF THE NEEDLE IS GOING TO FAR DOWN INTO THE BOBBIN. ANYWAY UPON OUR INSPECTION WE CAN SEE AS THE NEEDLE DESCENDS INTO THE BOBBIN THE PIECE BELOW IT HITS THE NEEDLE AND BREAKS IT.
COULD SHE HAVE BENT THE PART THE HOLDS THE NEEDLE? ANY ASSITANCE YOU CAN OFFER US WOULD BE HELPFUL. WE WOULD GLADLY ORDER THE NEW PART OR PARTS SO I CAN PUT THEM IN FOR MY MOM.

I purchased a brother sewing machine in June. Everything fine until now. When I wind a bobbin the thread is uneven on the bobbin. More thread on top of bobbin than bottom of bobbin. I've been using this for 7 months now and no problem , whats going on with it?

| I would need the model number to give you a precise answer, however, in most cases, the disc-like spring that is located on the top of the machine that you wrap the thread around before you go to the bobbin sometimes raises or lowers by vibration. The remedy for this is to locate the screw that holds the round spring-like disc and by trial and error, move it up and down until the bobbin winds evenly. If you do not want to do this, just guide the thread on with your finger- that is my easy way of doing it. It sounds simple, but it works.

| Broken Gears???
I am so excited about your web site. What a great resource for avid sewers like me! I was given a Singer touch and sew model 638. The machine seems to operate, but the self-winding bobbin, will not wind. I have meticulously checked the manual so I believe it is threaded correctly. A repairman said the machine may need new gear(s) and the cost to repair would be about $120. Does this sound about right? Would it be a sound investment for a model this old or should I not waste my money?

If the machine is not sewing, then yes, the gears are broken. Your machine is a very good machine and I feel that it is worth that amount of money to repair. | Zig-Zag Trouble
I have a Sears-Kenmore model 1410 (zig-zag sewing machine)-very old-
It worked like a charm up until recently. 3 years ago I started a quilt, then put it away due to schedule problems. Last month I pulled it out to finish it and now I cannot get the zig-zag funtion to work. Other than pushed down a shelf, the machine hasn't been touched since the last time I used it. I tried all the other stitches and the machine will do the back and forth motion, but not the across "zig zag" motion. the stitch width and length control all work, and I am following the manual exactly. Your machine is frozen from sitting so long. You will need to service your machine. Oil the moving parts and heat the moving parts up with a hair dryer and that should free things up.

| Motor Hums, But Needle Remains Motionless

| Serious Sewing Machine Issues
Hi There,
I just bought a brand new kenmore brand sewing machine from sears.
Not being very knowledgeable on the use of sewing machines, the first thing I did was read the manual. I read over and over it, and fdetermined how to thread the machine properly, as well as how to thread the bobbin properly. Once I felt I had accomplished those two tasks, I figured I was ready to sew.
On my first try, I had a similar problem to alot of people who have already written in --- the top thread got all caught up and tangled underneath the machine (where the bobbin goes). Looking back to my manual, I decided to try some troubleshooting options, and came to the conclusion that my tension was off. I read in great detail how to adjust the tension on both the top thread and the bobbin. After about a million attempts, I finally got the machine to
the point that the tension looked right, and the thread didn't get caught.
Assuming the problem had been corrected, I again tried to sew. Everything was fine until I tried to reverse-stitch. It seemed that every time I tried to reverse, the thread would get all caught again. I tried again to fine-tune the tension, and I double checked that the machine was threaded correctly, and that the needle was put in correctly, and everything seemed okay. When I tried sewing again, I hit the same roadblock when trying to reverse.
This time, so much thread got caught undreneath that removing the bobbin was not enough. I had to take a thick metal ring, and a half-moon shaped metal thingy out from under the machine to get at all the thread (and in doing so, I seem to have gotten oil all over my hands).
So NOW, I seem to have quite a list of problems that need correcting:
1) How do I correctly put the half-moon piece, and the metal ring back into the bobbin compartment area?
2) Is there any specific points I should know about adjusting the tention that might not be covered in my owner's manual?
3) How can I make it so that I can sew forward and in reverse with ease?

| Dear Angelina,
Your oringinal problem before you adjusted the tension was that your machine was not threaded correctly. You must try to reset the tensions the way that they were originally before you started adjusting them.
Now that that's out of the way, we'll reassemble the bobbin case area. First of all, remove all threads and put your pieces in a row: you should have a bobbin case, a half-moon shaped piece of metal, and a round piece of metal with two bumps facing upwards. Now, take the half-moon shaped piece of metal, known as the hook, and looking inside the machine, place it opposite the other half-moon shaped piece of metal, known as the driver, and make a circle. Then take the round circular piece with both bumps on either side and place it inside the housing and then move the left ear to the right to snap it in place and the right ear to the left to snap it in place. Now put your bobbin inside the bobbin case and tug on the thread. Be careful not to put your finger on the spring on the bobbin case while you are tugging the thread- the pressure that you feel should be firm, continuous, but not tight. Use this as a starting point. Install the bobbin case, re-thread the machine with great care, and sew. Now, inspect your stitch. If you are getting big loops on the bottom of the material, you are threading the top part of the machine wrong. Keep re-threading it until you eliminate the loops.
If you cannot rid yourself of the loops, then your only alternative is to return to where purchased the machine and have them show you how to thread the machine. If you do eliminate the loops, look at the bottom of the stitch on the material, and if the bottom thread is a straight line, loosen the tension on the bobbin case in small increments until you accomplish a good-looking stitch. | Black Marks on the Material
Hi!
My Singer touch and sew 750 was just serviced so now everything works, BUT the (i think they are called) feeder dogs are leaving black streaks on my fabric. What can I do? Is this a part I can buy and replace? Is it even worth keeping this machine? I bought it for 25, fixed it for 50 more, and just want to sew already!

Yes, you need to replace the feed dogs. They are part number 181843 and are available on www.sewingandvac.com
You can replace them yourself, it is not difficult. The person that serviced your machine should have replaced the feed dogs. Just my opinion.

| eBay and My Singer 1036 Issues
I recently purchased a Singer Creative Touch 1036 off of Ebay. I was led to believe the machine functioned properly; it does not. I'm hoping you can give me an idea of what is wrong with it.
Only after thoroughly cleaning lint globs from the bobbin area and under the machine (my mom took the bottom plate off and cleaned in there), did the machine run at all. The pattern stitch selector was reluctant to move at all, however we got that loosened up and it moves to all the stitches now.
We had the machine running well for about 20 minutes. We tried all the stitches; all worked well. Then I began zig-zagging some items. In the middle of this, I could hear something slip, and now only the straight sitch will lock into place. In zig-zag mode, when the needle moves to the left, it slides into place, moving the fabric with it. It does a straight stitch relatively well, though it still looks a bit "wonky" at times. On no other stitch, however, will it lock into place.
Can you give me any idea what is wrong with it? Is it something I can mess with myself, or is it best left to professionals?

I am, however, more than a little disappointed in the machine itself. The description in the auction led me to believe that the machine was functioning well. "IT HAS TWELVE BUILT IN STITCHES THAT ALL FUNCTION WELL." This is FAR from the case. While the machine _ran_ when I initially plugged it in, it was only after extensive cleaning (including removing the bottom plate to remove lint balls from inside) that I was able to get the machine to produce an even straight stitch.
Unfortunately, that is all it will do. There is clearly something mechanically wrong with the machine; the cams for the various stitches will not lock into place. A straight stitch is the _only_ stitch that it will do (and even that is if-y sometimes). It will not even perform a proper zig-zag (it tries, but since it seems the cam will not lock into place, it is not right).
In order to to get this machine fuctioning, I am definately going to have to it to the shop. That is a $50 charge just to set it on the counter; who knows how much it will cost to actually fix it. I'm less than thrilled with the idea of spending more to _fix_ the machine than what it actually cost. ESPECIALLY given that the item's description led me to believe that the machine fuctioned properly.

Unfortunately, from your e-mail it sounds to me as if the cam stack gear is either stripped or slipping and you are looking at over $100.00 to repair. I strongly suggest reporting this incident to e-Bay and the institution in which you paid the e-Bayer with, ie. Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, etc.

| Bobbin Thread Will Not Pick UP
I just bought this machine second hand and it seemed to work just fine while testing it out. Now I go to sew my first project and the bobbin thread will not pick up no matter what. I have tried rethreading, changing the bobbin, changing out both needle and bobbin thread, and changing the needle, all to no avail. Any ideas on what to try next. I don't even think we have a local repair shop. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I need more information to be able to help you. If it worked when you tested it out, unless the user did something, the machine should work the same. Did you do anything to the machine, ie, jam it somehow, bump it, try to adjust something? If so, let me know and I will better be able to determine what is damaged, if anything. If you don't have a local shop nearby, you could ship your machine to me and I will give you a free estimate. Try the simple things first though. Let me know.

The only thing I did that could have done this was try to use one of my singer bobbins from an earlier XL version. Would that have done it? The ones in this machine are plastic, and the ones in the older machine were metal, but they were the same size, and since I have over 50 filled bobbins from the old machine, I thought I would be able to use the thread from them, even if I couldn't refill them. If that's the case, will it just be a matter of having a service place reset the timing? And if it is, I swear I have learned my lesson forever. : ] Melanie

The bobbins do not have anything to do with it. Check all of the elementary things before going any further- make sure that the needle is in correctly, check the threading and if the problem persists, the only other suggestion that I have would be to take it to a qualified mechanic in your area. Or, like I said in a previous e-mail, you could always ship it to me for a free estimate. Let me know how it turns out.

| Singer 237 Not Making Stitches
Even though I have threaded and retreaded the needle and the bobbin not a stitch will be made, just holes in the fabric.
My sewing machine is Singer Model #237 and is about 35 years old and it had not been used in a few years.

| Thread Clumping
Hey,
I am a beginner, and my fashion design teacher let me borrow an old sewing machine till spring, to practice on. It used to work fine for a day or two, and then it started having problems. After I re-thread the machine, and fix the
bobbin, I start a few stitches....and then it stops, and I look under my fabric, and there's a big clump of thread.
I've rethreaded by machine so many times, yet I don't know what to do. I read somewhere about raising feed dogs or something, but I don't understand.
Can you please help me quickly, because I have to finish these pajamas as a present for my mother.

| Difficult-to-Turn-Handwheel!
I recently got my Kenmore 148.15600 out of storage and before even threading noticed that the wheel on the right side of the machine that can manually move the needle up and down (clearly I am a novice and don't know the techincal term) is very hard to turn. I checked to make sure that there was no thread tangled around the bobbin and everything looked fine. There were no hang ups in the thread anywhere. Is there another place that I can look to see what the problem might be? Could there be a belt that is worn out or something else that I am overlooking?

I HAVE A SINGER MELLENNIUM SERIES, MODEL 6412. I HAVE HAD THE BOBBIN CASE REPLACED AND MACHINE SERVICED TO THE TUNE OF $125.00.
THE MACHINE STILL WON'T MAKE A STITCH. THE REPAIRMAN HAS SINCE GONE OUT OF BUSINESS.

Check all of the simple things first: the threading, the needle, etc. The flat side of the needle goes to the opposite side of the last thread guide. Try this first, if you have no succes, please send me a picture of the bobbin case area with the bobbin case out of the machine and the needle in its lowest position and I will try to help you.

| Singer Touch & Sew 756
While sewing on my Singer Touch and Sew 756, my top thread suddenly began looping on the under-side of the fabric. I have tried re-threading the machine, putting in a new needle, trying new thread and cleaning and oiling the machine. In order for the stitch tension to be balanced, the bobbin tension must be as low as it can go and the top tension must be as tight as it can go. Also, this only works on smaller stitch lengths: 9 or above.
Is this a timing issue? How can I fix this? Also, do you know of any instructions for sewing machine repair on the internet?

| Kenmore Sewing Backwards!?
I have a 30 yr old Kenmore. Always worked fine until I cleaned and oiled it two days ago. Now it only sews in reverse! The reverse button is not engaged, but when I engage it (push it in) it still sews backwards (which it should...I was just trying to test to see if it were stuck).
I cannot imagine what I did as I have cleaned and oiled it many times in the past.
Do you have any suggestions?

| It sounds like your reverse mechanism is frozen. You will need to take the bottom of the machine off, locate the reverse mechanism which is usually in the center of the lower shaft in the middle of the machine, and oil, service, and work it free. This should solve your problem. If my information does not pertain to you particular machine, please send me a picture of it with the base off so that I can help you.

| Bobbin Holder Isn't Rotating?!?

I have a Kenmore new model sewing machine and I recently changed the bobbin and started to sew and the bobbin doesn't seem to be rotating as it should. I lifted everything out and cleaned in there and the bobbin holder doesn't seem to be rotating and as soon as I start to sew, it "locks" up and won't move. any ideas? thanks, jill

Hi- I don't really mean rotate but it moves slightly and releases the thread out of the bobbin - I watched it just a slight movement to the right and hits a little notch like piece, but when it got stuck it didn't move at all, and this is what made it "lock up". that is the only way i know how to describe it, not being very mechanically astute. thanks so much for helping! I have had such bad luck with machines in the past, that it is very discouraging. the machine has only been used a few times. the only thing I can think of is that dust collected in there or it needs oiling or something like that, but can a dusty machine or one that needs oiling cause problems where the machine malfunctions? Dear Jill,
You are threading the machine incorrectly. The upper thread is looping on the lower part of the machine and is getting caught in the hook/race area. The remedy for this is to first remove the bobbin case and bobbin. Looking straight at the bobbin area, you will notice two ears on either side of the silver circular piece that surrounds the bobbin case. Push the right ear to the right and the left ear to the left, and pull the metal silver ring out. There is thread stuck in there. You might not see it until you pull the hook (half-moon shaped metal piece) out of the machine. Once you remove that piece, inspect it for lint and dust, brush and blow it out, re-install the half-moon shaped metal piece, re-install the siver ring (the race cover). Make sure that you press the right ear back to the right and the left ear back to the left to lock it into place. Re-install the bobbin and bobbin case. Now is the time that you have to make sure that you are threading the machine correctly. A test for this is when you go from the spool pin, draw the thread to the left to the first thread guide, draw the thread down, under and around the tension unit- making sure that you pick up the spring on the tension unit and making sure that the thread is in between the disks. Make sure that you thread this part of the machine with the presser foot in the UP position. Take the thread up to the silver eyelet (takeup- the part that goes up and down). From that point take the thread and tug it slowly, put the presser foot down. If you feel a drag on the thread, then you have threaded it correctly. If you do not feel a drag on the thread, then take the thread off and start again. Good luck.

| Tailor Sewing Machine Problems
I haven't been able to get a smooth, even stitch when straight sewing. Either the top thread or the bobbin thread is slightly loopy and loose. It does this with all types of fabric. I have played with the tension after trying to use the machine with the factory setting for a while but haven't had any success.
The top thread also doesn't move smoothly through the thread guides or tension discs--it almost feels as if the metal isn't smooth. That would make sense if the machine is a downgraded version.
I also can't get a satin zig zag stitch but I suspect that the machine just doesn't have that capability.
I would very much appreciate any suggestions.

| What Caused My Gear to Break?
Dear Sir,
My Singer 457 broke yesterday while I was sewing. I have determined that there is a broken gear at top of vertical shaft. One third of the teeth on this gear (graphite?) have been chewed away. The intersecting white plastic gear seems fine. I am not certain what caused these teeth to become chewed away. It seems that the vertical shaft stopped rotating (blocked?) and the white plastic gear stripped the graphite gear. Is this likely? What would cause the vertical shaft to block?
My father who is a car mechanic (and very handy) has been assisting me over the phone (while looking at my Mom's Singer).
Of course now I must replace the gear at the top of the vertical shaft. Do you have any tips? Also, do you believe that will fix the machine or is the root cause of the problem likely something else? In other words, should I be trying to figure out what caused the vertical shaft to stop rotating?

Jamming of the bobbin case is most likely what caused the stoppage of the shaft. Just replace the gear and you should be fine. If you need any assistance with that, let me know.

I have a Singer sewing machine model 6212C. It is hardly ever used these days. I took it out to do some hemming and noticed a pretty distinct smell start to permeate the room. We all figured it probably needs oil. Like I said, it is hardly ever used.

| Material Got Pulled Down Into the Bobbin

I just started to sew a seam and the material which was thin got pulled down into the bobbin casing. I was able to get all the material out. I took out the shuttle and cleaned out the race. | Gear Problem?
my elna super 62 will sew straight stitches beautifully...
but will not sew any of the other stitches that seem to be available...
it only came with one additional cam disc... that doesn't work either... can you tell me if it might be a gear problem? Is it that something I can possibly replace myself (I saw that the cam gears and hook (?) gears area available on a webiste for under $20 each.
I do so want to get it running with the other stitches available... I was quoted $195 for labor and $39 for parts from a sewing center to replace a "gear" they didn't state which gear?
Can I do this repair myself...(I'm very mechanically inclined)...

| If you are still getting a straight stitch it is the cam stack gear that is broken. To be perfectly honest, it is quite a difficult job- I believe that $195 is an exorbatant rate to pay and $39 is more than double what I charge for that same gear ($18.95). You could ship the machine to me and I will repair the machine for $80.00 + the cost of shipping.
Unless you are very familiar with sewing machines and disassembly, I don't suggest attempting this repair on your own. Let me know if you would be interested in shipping the machine to me.

| Bunching Thread
Hi I recently purchased a Singer 8280 machine and I am sewing ribbon belts. In one night I made four complete belts that turned out perfect! and then when I was moving on to the fifth one..I started having problems. I didn't touch anything..I have the tension set on 3.5 to about 4. somewhere in between those two numbers which is the normal tension setting, and I re did the bobbin a few times and re-thread the top of the machine to what I believe is correct from the manual but the bottom thread still bunches in big loops, while the top thread appears normal. How can I fix this, because it seems I've tried most everything?

Hi , I'm having trouble with my lower thread tension. While stiching with white lower thread and black upper thread, the stich shows the white lower thread coming through on the top. | Kenmore Machine Problems
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
This past weekend my father gave me a Kenmore 158 16900 sewing machine.
It has a horizontal bobbin and I have no experience in this type set up. I see no release button or lever and this bobbin seems to need help getting out of it's cozy area which is slightly under the plate where the feed feet are..
ALSO, do you know if this machine is suppose to have accessories? There is a storage area behind the foot and I really don't know why it is there.
One more thing, how can I get a manual for this?

| The bobbin should be realatively easy to get out. If it is not, it is most likely the wrong bobbin. Get something small to try and pry it out.
Your machine could have very possibly came with accessories, as most sewing machines do. That is more than likely the storage spot that you are referring to.
As for the manual, I would need to see a picture of the machine to be able to locate one for you since Kenmore never actually produced any machines, rather, they had other sewing machine companies manufacture them and then they slapped their name on it.

I have a model 9020t and the bobbin case keeps popping out as soon as you sew, I checked the bobbin case and ended up buying 3 more bobbin cases, I changed the needle, the thread and the bobbins, the top thread keeps getting caught on something and pulling out the bobbin case, any suggestions?

| Bobbin Winder on Singer 5932
Hi, My singer machine has been working great for years. Suddenly, without any warning, the bobbin winder stopped working. I'm in the middle of Christmas projects - any suggestions for fixing it at home?
When i engage the bobbin winder, the small rod that holds the bobbin while it is being wound, does not spin - the machine goes through the motions, sounds as if it should be spinning/winding but again, the rod holding the bobbin does not turn. It seems as if something mechanical is not engaging properly. My husband is very handy but after opening the machine, he was unable to determine what was keeping the rod from spinning. Do you have any idea what might be causing this - any idea where we might find a schematic diagram of this particular machine - any suggestions at all? The nearest factory repair center is hundreds of miles away. Of course I could ship the machine but then I likely won't be able to finish my christmas projects. Please help. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may be able to offer.

| Dear Beth,
There are two things that could stop it from spinning- either
1: the rod is frozen and needs to be oiled or
2: the rubber ring is not touching the handwheel, in which case just adjust it so that it does.
You should definately be able to correct this problem yourself in your home and be able to finish your Christmas projects.

My needle broke on my machine while putting quilt pieces together(just started seaming strips) Now the bobbin housing keeps coming up and loose. I know that it is something simple, but for the life of me can't figure it out. Jams right away as thread is feeding under bobbin.

| Broken Gear Maybe?
Hello,
I’m sentimentally attached to this singer touch n sew 758 for it was my Grandmothers. I had the motor replaced a year ago and all was well up until two months ago. I was sewing a bean bag (with beans in it) and the machine broke. Probably because it was too think. Anyhow, I can’t afford the $200 repair estimate they seem to be suggesting. I would like to try to fix it myself. I’m pretty well inclined with this sort of thing. Any troubleshooting ideas.

| Help! Bobbin Thread Tangles & Machine Gets Stuck
I have a Simplicity machine. The bobbin thread seems to be getting tangled somehow, after the first coouple of stitches the machine tightens up and won't go. When I go to take the fabric out from under the presser foot, There is a big bunch of thread coming up from the bobbin . It used to do this only once in a while, but now it's like every few stitches and driving me nuts. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of stitch it is...I tried loosening the bobbin tension to no avail. Thanks so much!!!

| Although Needle Will Not Move, Motor Runs
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
Thank you for your wonderful website.
I need some help in tightening the pulley screw.
I own a Brother Boutique 30 sewing machine, and haven't used it for a while. When I did, I realised that the needle would not move, though the motor runs. I have checked on the machine, and realised that the problem was due to a slightly loose pulley screw, located at the bottom right of the machine, which links the sewing machine motor and the circular belt. Because of the loose screw, the belt cannot move. I can tighten it occassionally, then the machine works for a short while & it would detach itself again. The pulley screw is difficult to tigthen because of it's location (it is difficult to reach & turn the screw driver optimally). Please give me any suggestions how to tighten the screw - like what kind of screw driver to use & which is the best position to tighten it. I hope to save some bucks not sending it to the agent, cause I know the problem, it's just how to work on it.

| A small thin flathead screw will do the trick. Tighten the screw as much as you can and then crazy glue it- that way it won't come loose again.

| It sounds to me like you need a new clutch. If you send me a picture of the coupling wheel, I will be able to determine the part number that is compatible with your machine.

| Fabric Will Not Feed Through
I have a basic Kenmore machine; model 158.12270 (circa mid 70's). Has been performing great with occasional use, never been repaired. Now fabric will not feed through (feed dogs don't seem to be grabbing the fabric.) The manual says that an adjustment to the feed dogs might be needed, but does not show how to do that. Any advice? Thank you.

| The instruction manual shows you the adjustment for the feed dogs, however, I think you have a different problem. It sounds to me as if there is lint and debris caught in between the feed dogs underneath the needle plate. Take the needle plate off and clean out the lint and try it again. That is the most common reason that you would have feed problems. If that does not correct the problem, let me know.

The position finger on the right hand side needs to be adjusted closer to the case. It may very well be bent. If it is bent, it needs to be repaced. | Kenmore Clutch Problem
I have a 40 year old Sears Kenmore Model 158.330 sewing machine that my father bought me when I was 17 years old. Machine is basic with backward, zigzag, and a hem stitcher. Machine has sewn everything including leather and never been to a repair shop. This machine requires that you hand turn the wheel (I don't know the proper name, is where you turn a knob to fill the bobbin) when to begin to sew so that there will not be so much pull on motor. This is now so tight (almost locked up) that it will not turn. Machine has been sewing fine. Locked up liked this a couple of days ago and I just messed with it for a while and it sewed ok again. If I release to fill bobbin, motor and belt work fine. Is this a clutch problem? I have never had to repair this machine and I hear nightmare stories about costs. This is a wonderful machine and for the type of sewing that I do I really do not want to replace it. Please advise your suggestions.

It is time to service your machine. You could either take it to a repair shop and have them do it or you could do it yourself. Take the covers of the machine off, look for the parts that move, and drop a small amount of oil on each part. Run the machine until everything frees up.

| More than likely the gear system that you are putting your embroidery cams onto is broken. You can tell if this is by removing the cam, looking into the machine at the roundish black plastic that the embroidery cam snaps into. Somewhere on the circumference will be a crack. If this is not the problem, the machine might be frozen. Let me know what you find when you look into the machine and we will go from there.

There isn't a crack. I wonder if I just don't know how to use the cams. Or if maybe they aren't the right ones. They have white labels, where the originals had brown labels...But the seller told me they would work for any 6400 machine. (Mine is a 6440)
I have never removed the original A cam until now. The machine works perfectly with that cam. Is there some trick to changing cams? I don't REALLY need to do this, but thought it would be fun to try some embroidery stitches after all these years.

| Pfaff 463 Problems
Hi Doc,
I am at my witts end, the problem is poor stitch formation, looping under work. Usually solved by increasing upper tension. this does work to a point if tension is set so tight that the thread breaks I get a few good stitches, tension discs set to nearly jam the thread.
Tried the following, purchased service manual, set entire machine to factory specs heaps of gauges and bits. no improvement except machine a lot quieter, Thread being used is DURO M20 poly/cotton corespun. needles tried from sizes 120 to 160 slightly better at 160 but damages canvas being sewn. needle type Lammertz 134-135 DPX5.
Machine sews reasonably well using poly thread 40 using 100 needle but upper tension still seems a little tight to stop lower looping.

Please Help! I have rethreaded and rethreaded my machine thinking that was my problem for my bottom threading being all knotty and lose, my top is fine. I have changed my settings over as many times as I have rethreaded as well.

| Sorry, to say, looping on the bottom of the machine does mean that the machine is threaded incorrectly. Re-threading the machine is the only suggestion that I can make without seeing the machine to diagnose something more intricate myself.

| If you are positive your machine is threaded correctly, take the needle plate off of the machine and inspect it for burrs and scratches. If there are no burrs or scratches, carefully re-thread the machine. If there are burrs and scratches, simply sand them off with an emery board.

Hi, i seem to be having a problem with my toyota 4500 sewing machine...it seems to be sewing on the wrong side of the material..im fairly new at sewing and baught this machine with no manual.(cant seem to get one anywhere not even on ebay !).but its fairly straight forward as there are diagrams to show you how its done...but unfortunately when i choose a stitch..it comes out on the reverse of the fabric..it wasnt doing this when i baught it..all stitches were appearing on the side i was stitching..all are formed ok but are underneath the material when i want them to be on top..i hope you can help

It sounds to me as if the feed mechanism is frozen at zero. I suggest before spending $95.00, you should try heating up the stitch length area of the machine with a hair dryer while gingerly moving the stitch selector knob to see if it frees up. Let me know how you make out.

| Montgomery Ward Stitch Selector Knob Won't Turn
Help! I just had my Montgomery Ward -model 1934 sewing machine serviced. It runs like a dream. However, now I cannot get the stitch selector dial to work. When I turn the dial it just turns and doesn't change stitches. Every few turns it will change, but the number does not mathch up to the stitch I'm selecting. I did take it back and the gentleman said it was just worn out and old, and nothing could be done to fix it. I'm frustrated, because it worked before I took it in to be serviced.(the dial). I took it in because the machine actually froze up on me. Is there any hope? Should I take it to someone else to look at?

| Vintage Sewing Machine Headache
I just got for my birthday a Singer sewing machine
model 237 from my soon-to-be mother-in-law... I have asked her how to use it but she said it gave her too many headaches and that is why she gave it away. Anyways...it just doesn't want to stitch right...the top stitch is fine but it seems that it isn't catching onto the bobbin thread and looping...and when I opened it up to look at the bobbin thread it was all bunched up in there. I am a beginner with this and am wondering if it has something to do with the tension...I have no idea ehat it is supposed to be at and I would like info on what I should set the tensions to PLEASE!!!! I just cannot seem to find info

| Re-thread the top of the machine making sure that the thread is in between the two disks on the tension unit. Floss it through, if need be. If when you raise the presser foot the tension does not release, you need to let me know that so that I can help you adjust that. Please respond.

I just picked up a Viking machine and noticed that it had been dropped and broke the stitch selector knob. It won't hand turn and I'm not sure if something is bent or just stuck or if I'm not doing something right. Everything else is working fine. I took the cam out, but it still won't turn, just barely wiggles. Is there something I'm missing on it to make it turn? Is

| Dear Kathy,
First, take the back off and spray some WD40 near and around the shaft that your cam came off of. Now, heat the back of the machine with a hair dryer on medium heat. After about 5-7 minutes, try to wiggle the stitch selector and you should find it loosening up (BE CAREFUL- don't try to move TOO fast, it will free up in increments). Good luck! Hi, I have a Pfaff 360 that usually runs like a dream. As I went to use it, the bottom feeder does not raise up above plate level, therefore the fabric does not move. Any suggestions? I have been doing the timing and minor repairs on my own for several years...but can't figure how to fix this. Nothing seems loose, I've taken the plate off, but don't see anything wrong

| According to the Pfaff 360 that I have in the back, there are two dials on the lower righthand front of the machine and the one on the left is the feed lifter/drop dial. In one position the feed is up and the other the feed is down. I do not fhink that this is your problem, but check it anyway. I apologize that this seems very elementary and I am sure that you would know that they are there since you stated in your e-mail that you have timed your machine previously. Let me know how it turns out.

| Lower Thread Won't Come Up with Needle

My girlfriend and I have a Singer 237 Fashion Mate that won't quite work for us. The lower thread won't come up with the needle, so we can't even start sewing. The thread has come up two times by mistake, but when we started to sew the machine jammed up with the threads getting stuck in the fabric. We're from Sweden so I don't quite know all the terms, but I hope you can understand us!

It sounds to me as if you have the needle in backwards and are misthreading the top of the machine. Replace the needle with a new one and put the flat side to the rightside of the machine and thread the needle left to right. Also, re-thread the top of your machine. | My Machine Keeps Jamming
Hi there...It was working fine 3 weeks ago when I finsihed a project and put the top of the case on..I go in the sewing room yesterday to start a new project while the little one naps (the door is always closed to keep tiny curious hands out..that's why i also lock the cover...lol) and everything was set the same....but now after 2, maybe 3 stiches it's jamming and not doing anything...So I tried again today after pouting about it yesterday thinking I was just tired...LOL...It's still doing it and now I am just mad and frustrated (it's out of warrenty of course)....It's threaded correctly, tension seems ok, it's catching bobbin thread wonderfully...
The bobbin is a drop in bobbin so I took the cover off to see what was up and why it may be jamming...When I manually moved the needle the top thread (it's pink today) was moving over the top of the bobbin (not touching it but somehow moving over it and eventually getting where it needed to be and then it goes right back to it...I don't think that's what it's supposed to do is it????
I just don't have the money right now to get it repaired and hopefully it's something I can fix all on my own....

| Still Need Help
I contacted you before and you said that my needle may be in backwards. (I had it with the flat side to the back, so I now switched it to the flat side to the front).
You said my thread may be threaded wrong, so I redid it. You said that my bobbin might be threaded wrong, and sure enough, I opened the side door of my machine and there was a picture of the bobbin threading. I had to flip the bobbin and have the thread coming from the right side of the bobbin. (If that makes sense to you...I hope)
I can now thread my bobbin into my machine. However, the dial on the left side of my machine (next to where I thread down the front of the machine to the needle, not the length and width) was on 4, and it was not sewing on the bobbin side. I changed it to 2 and it sews the bobbin thread. What should this be at, and what is it for? I am guessing tension for threading some how.
Also, what is the proper width and length of stitches? Not sure where to have them set at. I know it has to do with different types of material, because the dial below it shows different colors, and says stretch stitch.
I have a Kenmore (22 stitch?) sewing machine. I can't fine my book!
Any help would be appreciated. By the way, thanks for the tip on sewing over the hump on blue jeans, I'll be sure to try it. I should save on needles that way.

| The flat side of the needle SHOULD go to the back of your machine. The tension dial should stay on 4 and that should give you a nice flat stitch. As far as the length and the width of the stitch, that is to your preference. For example, find a finished garment that you like the stitch on, measure an inch of those stitches, then adjust your machine accordingly so that your machine stitches the same amount of stitches in an inch. Same thing for zig zag. The dial that says stretch stitch is just that. A stitch that incorporates forward and reverse motion to create elasticity without using elastic thread. I hope this helps.

I have a White Sewing Machine. It was running fine earlier, but now I can’t get the needle to catch the bobbin thread. I’ve tried re-threading the needle, using a different bobbin, took apart the bobbin mechanism and cleaned. Do you have any other troubleshooting suggestions I can try?

| Go through the easy stuff first:
Make sure the needle is in correctly with the flat side to the rear of the machine, make sure to thread the upper and lower portions of the machine correctly. If this does not solve your problem, please respond.

| Do I Have a BIG Problem?
I am very happy sewing with my older machine since I bought the foot control from your company. Thank you again.
I have another problem. A young couple gave me the sewing machine above. It was probably their parents as it looks old. It works great but ONLY IN REVERSE. It has the automatic reverse pattern discs. There is a Reverse Stitch push button that does nothing whether pushed in or left in the out position. I think it is for bar tacking?
Do I have a big problem and one too costly to repair? If it is an easy fix, please tell me the price of part needed.

I don't think that it needs a part. It sounds to me as if it needs the old hair dryer and oil trick. Take the lid of the machine off and point a hair dryer into it while gently working the reverse button and the stitch length knob until it frees up. Then service that area with oil and oil the rest of your machine and that should do the trick.

| I Was Hemming Blue Jeans and.....
I have a Kenmore sewing machine. I was hemming blue jeans, and when I got to the seam it was too bulky for my needle to go through, so I helped it along by turning the wheel. Worked fine, then needle broke. I replaced the needle, tried again. Then the thread was all bunching up on the underside of the material. Then I took out the bobbin, undid the screw on the metal plate and removed it. I pulled out the bobbin holder(?) It was full of dust balls all inside this cavity. Cleaned it all out. Put back together, same problem, broke needle, replaced it etc. Repeated above. Now all back together, and the thread won't feed from the bobbin. Did I put the bobbin holder in wrong? Is there a wrong way? I left the metal cover off and turned the wheel to see why it wasn't picking up the thread, not sure why, cause I don't know how it was in there to begin with! The metal lid fits over top, so I assume the bobbin holder is in there properly? When in doubt, ask a pro! So help, please.

| It sounds to me as if you have your needle backwards and when the thread bunched up it was an indication that you mis-threaded the top of the machine. A little trick to going over bumps on jeans (it may sound silly) is to take the bump and put it on the corner of a solid table and beat the heck out of it with a hammer. That will not only lower the bump, but it will loosen the tightness of the sizing in the material when it was new. Let me know how you make out.

You need to take the back of the machine off and point a hair dryer inside and work the buttons until they move freely. If this does not help, it sounds as if you have spun the buttonholer out of position and there is really no way for me to tell you how to repair that through e-mail. Thank you for your web site. I bought a Model 260 Pfaff sewing machine from an estate sale; however, did not try to use it until after I retired which was at least three years later. Dr. SewVac: I again rethreaded the machine according to the instructions just to be sure it was threaded correctly; checked the bobbin again; the bobbin thread comes up from underneath just fine; the thread does not knot up a lot underneath; now I am not getting a stitch except for a long single piece of thread on top and not much on the underside; also, the needle became unthreaded, I am using cotton covered polyester thread in both the upper threading and in the lower bobbin thread. Thank you for responding and I really appreciate your help. Also, I put in a new needle; it was bought at Hancock Fabrics and it is a size 130 needle which is flat sided and eye of the needle is facing front as was the needle that was replaced. The needle is a Universal Schmetz designed for light fabrics like cotton. The machine is not jamming now; however it doens't make a real stitch; just a long top thread. The bobbin thread seems to be fine because it pulls through just fine even after the thread broke.

This is a very unusual problem. I have never heard of a Pfaff 260 going out of time. You are going to have to take the needle plate off, presser foot off, bobbin case out of the machine. With the needle in the lowest position, take several picture of the bobbin case and needle and e-mail them to me. Please paste the pictures onto the e-mail itself as I am unable to open attachments.

Make sure the needle is in the machine correctly- all the way up into the needle bar, make sure that it is threaded correctly, etc. If this all checks out ok, take the bobbin case out of the machine. There are two ears on either side of the bobbin case- turn the left one to the left and the right one to the right. Remove the silver ring, and inspect the piece of metal that the ring came off of (looks like a circle with the top cut off). You have to locate the hook which is the piece that looks like a half moon inside the big round metal piece. Locate the tip of it, turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is in the lowest position, at this point the tip of the hook should be flush with top of the left side of the cut off circle. If this is not so, your machine needs to be re-timed. If that is the case, I would need to see a picture of the bottom of the machine so that I am able to determine what needs adjusting.

| Tension Too Tight
Hello,
I have a Kenmore 158.1765 model, and the tension is way too tight. I've dialed it down to 0 and I can still see the bobbin thread on top of the fabric. Is there a way to adjust the bottom tension? I've dusted, oiled, rethreaded, changed the needle and the bobbin, and everything else I can think of. Is there anything else I could try before I call the pros?

| Put your top tension on 4 and tighten your bobbin case accordingly. Before you do all of this, check to make sure there is no thread underneath the bobbin case.

| Singer 132Q Making SO Much Noise!
Hi,
I have a Singer 132Q Featherweight machine, and it recently began making a VERY loud noise, which I discovered was from the thread take-up lever hitting against the outer plastic case. I took it apart and watched it while I turned the wheel, and it seems to be working irregularly, sometimes hitting inside parts (as well as the outer case) and sometimes not. Is there any adjustment I can make myself, or do I need to bring it in for repairs? It is not an expensive machine—is it even worth fixing? Thanks for your help.

Look for wrapped thread caught in the connecting links in the machine (the link that connects the needle bar to the balance wheel). Remove the thread and that should solve your problem.

| Feed Dog Not Feeding
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I am using a very old sewing machine, a Kenmore model 148.13103. The feed dog is not feeding the fabric properly. The fabric remains immobile and will not move forward. I observed the mechanism and the feed dog will only move up and down, but not forward to push the fabric through. Do I need to take my sewing machine to a mechaninc, or is there something I can do to fix it at home?

| Dear Deborah,
You have a combination problem of your feed dogs and stitch length are frozen. Take the lids off of your machine, inspect the interior as much as you could, heat the machine on both ends with a hair dryer, be careful because the machine will get very hot. Keep working the stitch length dial or lever until it starts to free up. Then inspect the mechanism that controls the feed dog. Heat that with the hair dryer and work that until it frees up. Then lubricate the machine and that should solve your problem.

| Thread Catching
I have just fixed the thread breaking problem I had, to come across a new thread breaking problem. The thread is wearing itself thin and making a grinding noise coming through the tensioner. We took the tension plates out to see if there was anything catching inside and found nothing, but the thread pulls through smoothly for a few revolutions and then catches. After several catches the thread is so thin it snaps while stitching. It also breaks on every backstitch reguardless. What could cause this to happen?

| Very Noisey Viking 6440
Hello,
I have a Husqvarna Viking 6440. I used this machine back in the 70's alot, then used sporadically for awhile. It has been stored for a good 10 years. I decided to make quilts for my grandkids for Christmas and dug out the old Viking. It is making a lot of noise, still sews OK but I am wondering if it is OK to use. This is a "self oiling" machine and I am wondering if being stored for such a long time has hurt the machine.

Boy, I wish I still had that machine. I don't trust the "no oil" machines. What could have happened to it? The damage that I am speaking of is caused by dried up old oil lodging itself in the very small mechanisms in the machine. When the parts are not lubricated, they tend to stick in place which requires extensive service on the machine, not only to free these parts up, but to also bring them back for adjustment.
I'm sorry that this machine was presented to you as a "self-oiling" machine, because in all reality, it is not. The only true "self-oiling" machines out there are industrial machines.

Those machines need to be disassembled to be oiled properly. They do not give instructions on how to do so in the instruction manual because it is very difficult to take apart and put it back together. Unfortunately, I do not have any literature on how to do, but if you just survey the machine, I'm sure you'll find how to get it apart. Just be careful. Wish I could have been of more help.

I recently purchased a brother vx-1500 sewing machine from a garage sale. It looks as if it perfect shape, but something is not working right. I am threading it like the picture shows, but the thread just keeps getting tangled up.(The picture is only a thumbnail size sticker on the side of the machine.) Now with having bout this at a garage sale, it came with no instructions. I am only 18 years old and have taken only one semester of home ec. So the problem most likely lies with me. | Pfaff 545 Will Not Sew ANYTHING
Hello there!
I know you have gotten this question over and over again and I have tried everything you have recommended as well as what I know works on domestics. I have just purchased a used Pfaff 545 and it has just come back from the repair shop where it was sewing wonderfully or so they say. Anyways I get it home and I cannot get it to sew 'anything'. No matter what at some point, usually within the first few inches of stitches the thread begins to ravel and eventually breaks ending up all knotted around the needle hole or sprung back up around the top. I have tired threading it the way the photo copy of the manual that came with it says....I have tired threading it the way the fella who sold it to me says....I have tried tight tension, medium tension, loose tension and everything in between.....I have tried needles too large for the fabric, just right for the fabric and too small for the fabric......I have tried different threads from different companies.......I have even tried putting the needle in incorrectly on the off chance that may work......grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I have tired 'everything' I can possibly think of and I cannot get this machine to sew for me without the thread breaking. HELP!

I use my 4610 for home decorating projects
My machine is 20 years old, and each time after 10-20 minutes of simple straight sewing or whenever I have to change the bobbin thread, the bobbin thread jams or starts to wiggle out of place. It will not stay put and it has been overhauled 2 times in last year. Can you make a suggestion for a hearty machine to do home decorating projects such as pillows, curtains and the occassional hem.

| My Machine Only Sews for a Few Seconds-
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I'm sixteen and have been sewing for half a year on my own. I have a brother vx-1120. Every time I try to sew, it won't sew for more than a few seconds because the thread gets all tangled in the lower bobbin area. The bobbin thread isn't too much part of the entanglement - it's more that the top gets tangled (but underneath in the bobbin area - not on top where I sew), and because I'm sewing I don't notice, and then it breaks every two seconds. At one point I took out the bobbin thread (but left the bobbin casing in so the top thread wouldn't get totally caught), didn't put fabric in the machine, and started sewing like I normally would. Sure enough, withing ten seconds, it got caught again.
I don't know how to fix it - I've threaded the top properly, and my needle isn't in backwards (I'm sixteen, not stupid =D ).
On the FAQ section of the website where you answer questions, I found a couple situations that looked similar to mine, but I'm just not familiar with sewing jargon (and some of them had different brands and I didn't know if it made a difference). If you have time to get back to me and answer my question, please try to make it as clear as possible, as I'm not well versed in sewing machines at all, other than novice-intermediate skills. I.e.: if the answer is "the timing is off" [not that I know what timing even is] well that's great, but what can I do to fix that? You see what I'm saying…. Right? ^^;

It is wonderful to hear from a young person in the sewing industry, as it is a dying art.
I always go to the simplist things first, which is whether or not the needle is in correctly (all the way up in the needle bar and your needle would go flat side to the back), and then I would very carefully check the upper threading on the top of the machine. The way to check your threading is, after you thread your machine with the presser foot UP, pull the thread slowly through the needle and put the presser foot down. If you feel a heavier pull on the thread, you have threaded your machine correctly. If you do not feel a heavier pull, you have threaded it incorrectly.
If this does not solve your problem, you more than likely have a burr, scratch, or cut on your hook/shuttle. Before going through a description on how to solve that problem, I would like you try the above troubleshooting first and then respond with your success of defeat. These are the two major causes of the problems you have given me.

Thread the machine with the presser foot UP in order to have the tension disks separate.
If your machine continues to bunch up, check the hook which is behind the black cover in the bobbin case area of the machine, held on by 4 screws. Take the cover off and inspect the hook itself for damage. Inspect it very carefully, as the damage could be very subtle- it could have a slight scratch or bump. Respond with what you find and we'll see what we can do.

My machine jams the needle thread and it will not go around the bobbin case. Thread builds up and the machine stops. Then I bend the cloth up and cut the thread under the cloth to get it out. Then I pull out the thread pieces and rethread it. It keeps doing the same thing.

| Sewed on TOO Thick Fabric-
Hello there
I hope you have some good advice for me! I was stitching some fabric the other day and it was a little thicker than I should have probably been stitching, the lower thread got all tangled and the needle got jammed and wouldn't move up or down I wiggled it a bit and then forced it a bit by using the wheel on the side to make the needle move upwards and then cut the thread out. When I move the handwheel it stops at a certain point each way.. forwards and Backwards! Why do you think this is happening?
Also I removed the outer casing to see if some thread was caught inside and a spring from under the foot plate has fell off and now can't work out how to get it back on.
I think the main problem is mechanical because the motor still works.

| It may sound crazy, but it sounds like there is a loose part somewhere in your machine. Take all of the covers of your machine off and then disassemble the hook. Then, turn the machine upside down and shake it- something will fall out. E-mail me back with what fell out.

| Feed Dogs TOO Low on My Viking 6010?!
Less than a year ago, I had my machine serviced, cleaned, and they fixed my reverse button (it worked, was just cracked). We have since moved a couple states away and the feed dogs will run fabric forward, but not in reverse. With no fabric at all on it, I can see the feed dog lower when the reverse botton is pushed in, and they will even move in the correct direction, but they are not up high enough to catch and move the fabric. Is this a simple fix or is something more likely broken??!! Thanks so much for an informative web site!! Vicki

How high are the feed dogs in the forward motion? If they are not too high in the forward position, there may be dirt in between the teeth under the needle bar.

| Needle Un-Threads on My 6217
I have a singer 6217C. I looked through the FAQ, and found a previous question bout the same problem. After only a couple of stitches the thread comes loose from my needle. Your answer was that ther was probably a burr inside the bobbin casing or hook causing the thread to break and come undone. However, my thread is not breaking in the process of coming undone, it is just unthreading from the needle and the last guide, and no matter how slow I walk the machine I can not see how this is happening.

| All Knotted Up!
Hi, my name is terri and I have a sewing machine that I bought at a yardsale. It don't have a manual and I would like to know about it and the right way to work it, whenever I try to sew, the thread gets all knotted up under the material.
The only name on the sewing machine is "ELECTRA" It has stretch stitch, three kinds of button holes, six sizes of zig zag, blind stitch and five stitch lenghts, a reverse button, a sew/darn button. I have never heard of an "ELECTRA" and can't find it anywhere. If you have any info on this could you please send me some.

How do I thread the bobbin? It was my grandmothers machine and it seems to work, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to thread the bobbin, let alone fill one. Help!

Thread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button to the right. Begin to start the machine. After about five seconds of running the machine, stop, unwrap the thread from the screw, and remove it from the machine and continue to run the machine. You will note that the bobbin is winding. When you have wound enough thread onto the bobbin, stop the machine, shut the bobbin case slide door, and begin to sew.
I do suggest that you have an instruction manual for just such purposes. There are many other "quirks" that can be explained through the manual. We have these available at www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95.

| Thread Bunching Up on Singer 4552
I hope you can help me. I own a Singer Merrit, model 4552. I was sewing a poodle skirt last night when my thread started bunching up on the bobbin side. When I looked into the situation I found that my top thread is winding around the bobbin case and getting stuck. How do I fix it?

There is more than likely a mark or burr on your bobbin case. Take the bobbin case out of your machine and polish off any burrs or scratches with an emery cloth.

| Winding Underneath the Bobbin
Hi
When I try to thread the bobbin on singer 1036 it keeps winding underneath the bobbin. I have the release set, the foot up, the thread looped on the side and the thing that holds the bobbini n pushed over to center. I have successfully wound it before. What is going on?

If you look at your bobbin case, you'll see a piece of metal that is near the number one on the bobbin case. It's probably pressed too tight against the plastic bobbin case. With a thin screw driver, wiggle it in between the metal piece and the plastic bobbin and separate it about the distance of a matchbook. This should fix your problem If you have any questions as to where this piece is located, do not hesitate to call me. Let me know how you make out.

It is a new headache. You have thread caught in the bobbin case spring, which you cannot see unless you take the bobbin case out of the machine. I suggest taking your machine to a local repairman.

I can give you instructions on how to take it apart, however, it is not an easy job and I cannot assume responsibility for you putting it back together properly.
Take the base off of the machine (there should be six screws), make sure that you take the screw out by the cord input. When you have the base of the machine off, underneath the slide plate is a box-shaped spring. Pull the spring down with your fingertip, look to the right of the spring and there is a hole, and there is a set screw inside of that hole. Release that set screw, then move to the bobbbin case area.
On the right hand side of the bobbin case area, there is a silver metal piece. On the back of the peice there is a small circular nut- remove that nut- DON'T LOSE IT. In the front of the metal piece, there is another screw which lift out with the plate because you loosened the set screw. Now you can remove the bobbin case, remove the thread underneath the spring, and follow these directions in reverse to reassemble.
The distance between the metal piece and the bobbin case is adjusted by the front screw that you lifted out with the metal piece. Adjust it to about the thickness of a matchbook cover, which is a distance that you cannot see, you have to FEEL that distance. When it is adjusted to that thickness, which can be felt by jiggling the bobbin case back and forth, you must tighten the set screw to secure that adjustment. Good luck.

I have a singer 3820 machine practically new and when I sew it sews fine for a minute and then the needle hits the bobbin or the thread bunches up in the bobbin. I sometimes run it without material and then the process starts all over again. Please help.

Check the clearance between the bobbin case and the front right position finger (the position finger keeps the bobbin in the machine). Make sure that there is enough space for the thread to pass through. I have never experienced bobbin thread being pulled out of the needle- it sounds to me as if the thread is breaking.

| I've Tried EVERYTHING!
I was given a used machine. It worked fine at first. Now when the wheel turns and the needle begins to head down it slows way down, and smells bad. I have use sewing machine oil, looked it over, ALL over, and can see no problems. I removed the race and reinstalled it. I am stumped. I have had several machines in my life, lost my last in the Cedar fire. This was a very nice machine, but slowly decided it doesn't want to move.

I am having a problem with my sewing machine. The bobbin thread is
constantly sewn loosely around the needle thread, so much so that I can
pretty much pull the stitch right out. It does this on both stretchy

| 9910 Bunching Thread
I recently bought a Singer Quantum 9910 machine. The thread bunches up when ever I try to do any stitch other than a straight stitch. I use the zig zag on my machine a lot, but this machine goes about 2-4 inches, then catches the thread in the bobbin area underneath the foot. I rethread and try again and again with the same result. Straight stitches are beautiful. I checked the threading upper and bobbin, the tension. What can I do to keep from getting more frustrated?

| 6235 Won't Wind Bobbin
Hi! I have a Singer 6235 that sews great the only trouble I have is it won't wind a bobbin. I can't get it to "catch" so it will wind. When it started giving me problems I was able to turn the wheel by hand slowly and get it to catch but now it won't even do this. How can I fix this problem without taking it in again to have it serviced. I had it in 3 months ago to fix this problem. The man told me it was probably a timing issue and he fixed it. But now it is not working. Any help would be appreciated.

When you look directly down at your bobbin case, there is a piece of metal. On the left hand side of the metal where it meets the plastic, there shlould be a gap. More than likely, there is no gap. With a very thin screw driver, press it in between the plastic and the metal and seperate the two about the distance of a matchbook cover. That should solve your problem.

| Singer 500- Reverse But Not Forwards?!?
I just recieved, a hand me down, a Singer modle 500 A and I cleaned it up, oiled the parts that needed oiled, via the use of what was left of the manual. And was so excited when it actually started running at full speed when the pedal was pushed down.
But after I got it threaded and the bobbin put in, the machine doesn't sew. The round thing that catches the thread by the bobbin isn't catching. It will kind of make two stitches in reverse but not forwards.
What is the problem and is there anyway to fix this on my own as I have currently been downsized from my job, got to love corporate downsizing. So I would really love not to have to pay for a repair if it can be done on my own.

| Tension and Threading Issues
I have a Singer (5) stitch sewing maching (I believe it was a school model) and I downloaded the manual from singer.com. Unfortunately the images are very fuzzy and hard to read. Everytime I thread the machine and start sewing, I seem to have bunched thread under the material. I have tried adjusting the upper tension, replaced the needle, rewound the bobbin. It is very frustrating. In addition, when I am threading the needle, the thread always pulls away from guide, or it will stay for a few stitches and I notice the stitches are messed up and the thread has pulled away. I think this may be leading to some of my problems. This is the image from the manual and where the thread always pulls away. Is there some trick to threading that I am missing. I would appreciate any advise. I have several projects I would like to do, but get frustrated every time I sit down to sew. thank you!

You are threading the top of the machine incorrectly. Re-thread the top of your machine and that should fix your problem. When threading your machine, just be patient and make sure that the presser foot is in the up position. Hope this helps.

| Does My Machine Need to be Realigned?
Hello,
I have just recently taken up sewing. Having no instruction on the matter, I have managed some how to bung up my machine. It is a Baycrest, of which model I'm not certain. The problem is the needle is not bringing up the bobbin thread. I've opened the cover plate and watched the action underneath to see what was going on. The needle is in fact hitting the shuttle body (as it is referred to in my instruction manual; the part that catches the thread). After taking a closer look, the needle seems to be too far forward, thus missing the spool thread. At first I thought the needle was bent, after changing it, I realized that wasn't the case. I've cleaned my machine, and rethreaded it numerous times. I've also tried using a new bobbin.
There is only one place here where I live that does sewing machine repairs, after telling him what I've just told you, I was told that my
machine needs to be realigned. This alignment will cost $90. I could get a new machine for that price, but I like mine. Hoping to avoid these costs, I was wondering what your diagnosis was and if there is a remedy?

hi, my sewing machine will catch the bottom thread, but when i put a piece of fabric down to sew on the foot drops down, and won't sew, and when i try to sew, only the top thread will sew and i can pull the stitch apart because there is no bottom stich, or the thread will knot up, and i have to take the bobbin out and fix the knot, but still it won't sew!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Craft Master 5000
I purchased a Craft Master 5000 sewing machine a week ago via the Internet. When I spoke to the saleman, he told me that the Craft Master is made by Janome and is the same as a Memory Craft 3000. I emailed the Janome Co. in New Jersey and they told me that Janome manufactures Craft Master machines. When I got my machine, I noticed that there is no serial number on it. Also, there is no warranty information printed in the owner's manual. The website states that there is a 20 year warranty on parts, 2 years on electronics, and 1 year on labor. I chose to purchase a Janome machine based on the product information posted on the internet and, more important, positive consumer reviews. After I received my machine and noticed no serial number and no printed warranty, I became suspicious. Did I get ripped off?
Also, yesterday the machine's arm that holds the needle began jumping from right to left when I turn the machine on. Otherwise, it sews well. I've only had this machine for a week, and I want to make sure that I purchased a good machine that will last me for years. I have a 30-day return on the machine. Should I return it for a "real" Janome that has a serial number and stated warranty? Is the "jumping arm" a sign of a defect, or is it something that I can correct? Please advise ASAP! Thanks!!

The jumping back and forth is needle- it's the needle bar calibrating itself when you turn the machine on. You'll also notice that the feed dogs will calibrate themselves as the needle enters the needle plate. As far as being ripped off, you probably got a great price on this machine and again, probably, you do not have a warranty with Janome. You have to decide whether the price of the machine is worth not having a warranty from the Janome Co. I would personally call the person that I bought the machine from and get a written warranty from him/her. Good luck.

| Will Not Make Any Stitches
The first problem is that the needle will not pick up the thread from the bobbin and bring it up through the hole under the needle to start sewing. If I thread the bobbin thread up through the hole by hand and try to sew, not a stitch will be made, just holes in the fabric. Is the needle bent or what? It was working fine until I tried to sew through vinyl using fishing line. Help!

| New Machine- Bobbin Problem

I am new to sewing bought this machine (Singer C100) and from day one the bobbin case pops up after I start sewing. Sort of. From the bottom the stitches apprear to be ok. I can see the bobbin tread showing up on the right side of the fabric. I have adjusted the bobbin and tried everything from 0 to 9 and it does not look any different. The seam just comes apart. I am going crazy because I would assume using 1 and 9 should show some difference! How tight should the bobbin tension be. Should I be able to pull it easily if I just take the bobbin out and pull the thread though or should there be some resisitance. I am not sure if it is me or the machine. Please help me. I am sewing lycra onto elastic and using a stretch type needle.

The stitch threads should meet in the middle of the material. Your top tension should be tight enough to pull the bobbin thread half way through the material and likewise with the bobbin thread, it should be tight enough to hold the top thread through in the middle of the material. You should not be able to pull the top thread or the bobbin thread freely. If your not getting any change in stitch tension by changing your top tension from 1-9, it sounds to me as if youre not threading the top tension properly.

| Winding a Bobbin
I have a Singer 1812/1862 Machine and I cannot wind a bobbin because when I hold the handwheel with my left hand, and try to loosen the wheel to wind the bobbin by turning it toward me with my right hand, it moves, but it moves the needle up and down, and doesn't loosen so I can wind a bobbin. What do I do?

| Without repairing your machine, you could still wind a bobbin in your machine by just letting the needle go up and down. Just remove the thread from the machine- the thread on the bobbin and the thread on the needle to prevent jamming.

It sounds to me as if it could be one of two things:
1. You have the wrong needle in your machine or
2. The needle is not up far enough in the needle bar.

To be simplistic, check the length of the settings on the machine to make sure that you have it set for a forward stitch. If that is not the problem, check to see that the feed teeth are coming up above the needle plate to move the material. If they are not, I could tell you how to raise them if you e-mail me a picture of your machine. If all else fails, check the pressure on the presser foot- the adjustment can be made on the needle screw. If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I recently picked up a stitchmaster model 23, (also says precision delux on the body) from a garage sale. It is an old machine and works with a knee lever. My mother who has used similar machines completed the upper treading, the bobbin case and shuttle was unsual and we refed to singer model 15 instruction manual to figure that piece out. After spending hours on understanding the equipment we could not make it run. The problem was in completing the stitch, the threads did not cross and the top thread bunched up around the bobbin case. What could this be due, how can we fix it???? Please help

If the stitch length bar, which is located on the right side of the machine, is in the up position move it down to where the numbers are. Those numbers are referring to how many stitches the machine will sew in an inch. Therefore, if you put it on 10, your machine will sew 10 stitches per inch. It being up will cause your machine to go in reverse.

I have just purchased a Kenmore 16227 50/27 stitch sewing machine, and no matter what I do, the tension is still way too loose. The needle thread comes all the way through to the bottom side. I've tried rethreading the machine and adjusting the needle thread tension but nothing works. Is there a way to adjust the bobbin thread tension? I can't figure it out!

| The problem with the thread that you are describing sounds like you are mis-threading the top of the machine. Make sure that the thread is properly inserted into the tension disks. That should help the bottom thread. As for a manual, I may be able to get you one, however, I need the model number of the machine rather than the model number of the motor. Please advise.

When you start threading the machine, you start from the spool, to the left, to the first thread guide, then down, under, and around a unit. That is the tension disk. Inspect that part of the threading process and make sure you are not missing threading around that tension disk.

There are no normal settings- there are 6 1/2 ounces of pressure from the bobbin case and then you set the top tension accordingly- that may not make much sense- you will need a pressure gauge to determine. | Tension Dial Q's
Hi!
I have been given a Singer model 603 Touch & Sew.
It is in good shape, and generally speaking can make a decent stitch. However, the tension dial seems to have problems. I've taken it apart to try to fix the problem (it looked bent initially, but that was because the thingy at the end of the shaft, that the dial is attached to was screwed on crooked), but I'm not sure what is wrong. I have tried to find a picture on the web to show me how it should go together, but I haven't found the exact model. I have a few questions:
1) How is the tension dial assembly held in place? Mine just seems to sit in place. When the pressure foot is raised, it gets pushed out a bit, and doesn't go back in by itself. Should it be held in by something?
2) Does the thin wire spring loop thingy (that moves with the thread) slot into the shaft somehow, or does it just wrap around the shaft? Do you carry this part? How much does it run? I think that by fiddling with it I've pulled it out of shape.
3) Is there a special way to put the tension dial assembly back together? That is, should the slot in the shaft be pointing in a particular way? Should the thin spring loopy thingy be in a particular place to start with? Etc.
I may need to replace the whole tension assembly. Do you sell this part?

The best that I can do for you is to tell the order in which the parts go back into place. You have three disks that are similar and a fourth disk with a bar coming out of it. Put the three disks closest to the machine and the fourth disk with the bar on it on the outside and the bar goes into the hole in the sewing machine. Before you push these parts onto the tension bar, you have to take the check spring (loopy spring thing) and sandwhich these four parts in between the loop of the check spring. As you are putting this into the machine, there is a sprocket type of assembly that engages the spring. Once this is in place, you have a cup shaped piece, then a beehive shaped spring, then a washer with a bar through the middle of it and a point (the point should go to the lower part of the bar). Then comes the silver wheel, then the number wheel is attached to that. I hope this helps you.

| Tension, Maybe?
The Merritt 3130 machine belongs to my stepdaughter she is about to sew brocade silk material, however the tension on this machine is off, it causes the bottom thread to bunch up and the machine will stop working. I provided a ball point needles and silk thread to help this situation out, it still causes the thread to cluster. What should to correct tension be for this type of material or is there a special pressure foot or other items necessary to complete this task?

Hi
I have a Singer Harmonie 200 Model #9133 and I have gotten the bobbin
threaded, but we cannot get the needle to pick up the bobbin thread. When
you try to sew, the thread from the bobbin wraps around the actual bobbin
underneath. You have to stich rip the thread off the bobbin and try again.
We have worked on this for hours and cannot get it to work. Any ideas??

Check the simple stuff first- threaded properly, needle in correcly, bobbin case and bobbin inserted properly, etc. If all of this seems to check out, check to see if everything is moving when you move the handwheel. If everything moves, and everything checks out, you will need to take your machine to a repair man- it may need to be re-timed.

| Auto Spool Winding/Filling Not Working
Dear sir,
I have a 20 year old brother sewing machine that hasn’t been used for years which I recently tried to use. However I found out for some reason the automatic spool winding/filling is not working !! After opening and cleaning it, Now, I am in addition unable to disengage the needle after loosening the knob in the handle (the needle keeps moving)!
Awaiting your diagnosis and remedy !
p.s. Is there a free standing electric bobbin winder and how much it costs ?

Your bobbin winder assembly sounds as if it is frozen. Over the years of non-use, a stitcky substance will occur from old oil on the moving parts. If you would oil the bobbin winder and heat it with a hair dryer, then gently turn it until it frees up, it will once again wind your bobbins. As far as the clutch is concerned, take the inside wheel off and the clutch ring, oil between the shaft and the handwheel, stabilize the needle bar, and turn the handwheel until it frees up, it too will work properly again after the oil is worked into it. | Ugly Seams
I make purses, and sometimes the fabric with fusible interfacing is quite thick, my sewing machine sews through the fabric/interfacing easily enough, and I have pretty stiches (top and bottom), but when I turn the purse, to the finished side, the seams are ugly, best description I could find at another site was "grin". How do I correct this? Hope you can help me with this problem, it's very frustrating.

I would try increasing the tension on the top. Whatever number it is on, move it three numbers higher. For example, if it is number 4, move it to number 7. The material is probably so thick that you need the tension to be very high in order make a good locking stitch on the bottom of the material. Hope this helps.

| A Few Questions-
I had an old Kenmore that I lent to a friend (learned my lesson). When I tried to sew on it the first time I got it back, it would only make huge loops on the bottom. While trying to play around with the tension, I noticed the upper thread was slipping off where it winds under the tension knob. I re-threaded it several times, but it would always slip back off nearly immediately. I also discovered that my tension knob was twisting past where it should have, and I have no way of knowing what it's set at, since it's been twisted all over the place. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to salvage it. (It isn't worth the price of a professional repair.)
I purchased a used Kenmore 15008 on ebay. I sewed a bit with it and it was fine. Last night, I began a project, sewed a couple of long seams with no problem at all, but when I tried to begin my third seam, the thread promptly knotted up in the bobbin. I took it all apart, cleaned and oiled it, but it continued no matter what I did. Do I need a new bobbin case? I watched it as I tried to stitch, and it was pulling the thread outside of the case - but I haven't watched it before, and don't know if that's an abberation. I can't afford a repair shop; thank you very much for any help you are able to give.

I take it from the way that your e-mail was written that we are talking about two different machines. I do not completely understand when you say that the tension was all twisted around. Are you talking about the numbers? In that case, the number should be at number 4. Or are you telling me that the entire assembly has moved out of position? In that case, somebody has to re-adjust the entire assembly in the casting of the machine.
On the second machine, it sounds to me as if you may be missing the thread through the tension assembly. Make sure that you have the presser bar in the up position and after you thread it through the tension assembly, bring down the tension bar and the thread should instantly tighten up. If this happens, you should have tension. Always make sure that you are using a new needle and that your tension is always set at number 4. Hope this helps.

| Needle Won't Pull Bobbin Thread
I recently purchased a used janome 4052 and do not have a manual. I was able to figure out the basic threading but cannot figure out the bobbin. It is a top loading and has a clear cover. There is a diagram on the cover but it is not very helpful! I've tried various ways of loading it and still can't get the needle to pull the bobbin thread through. We can sell you a manual for your machine for $16.95. When you drop the bobbin in, you will see that there is a slice in the bobbin case on the right hand side. Gently move it through the slice around until you see another indentation on the left hand side. At that point, stop and pull up the bobbin thread by holding the top thread from the needle in your hand and making one and ONE only revolution of the needle bar towards you and then pull on the thread that you are holding on to. This should bring up the bobbin thread. You can then replace the plastic cover that covers the bobbin thread and you should be ready to sew.

| Kenmore Tension Question
I purchased a new Kenmore last year because I had nothing but trouble with tension on my old Singer. Now I have a tension problem on the Kenmore. I am getting too much upper thread in my stitches on the underside of the fabric. I have tried adjusting the tension up and down like the instruction manual says but nothing seems to solve the problem. It just gets worse in a different way whichever way I go.The thread can just pull out of the stitches if not knotted on each end, and the fabric tends to shrink up almost like gathering.

Whenever you have a problem with tension, the first thing that you should do is clean the machine. Make sure that you have cleaned out the bobbin case area, hook area, and of course under the needle plate. Change your needle, making sure that the round part of the needle is facing you. Rethread the machine, making sure that the presser foot is in the up position. After you have threaded the tension assembly, drop the presser foot and make sure that the tension is tightening up.
If adjusting the tension, you should always start with the tension number on number 4. The screw on the bobbin case is not a tension. This is called a constant, and should never be touched. You should only make sure that you have a light to medium pull on the thread tension when you have adjusted that screw. Once it has been set, do not move it for any reason.
The rule of tension is as follows: If it is loose on the bottom of the material, you turn the top tension to a higher number. If it is loose on the top, you turn it to a lower number. Bunching, clumping, no stitch at all, are almost never a tension problem , rather a problem with improper threading and/or timing of the machine. Hope this helps.

The only thing that holds that bobbin in place is something that looks like a club foot which is located in the upper left hand corner of the bobbin case area. Unfortunately, I could not tell you whether or not that is the reason that your bobbin is popping out of your machine without seeing it.

On your bobbin case, there is a thin piece of metal located somewhere near number one on the case. The metal is probably pressed too tight to the plastic. Separate the metal from the plastic by using a screwdriver. Make the distance between the metal and the plastic about the thickness of a matchbook. That should fix your problem.

| Tight Stitches-
Hi, was wondering if you would be able to help me. I have a Brother XR-52 which is fairly new, only used it a few times. This time trying to use it the stitches are extremely tight even when I loosen the tension all the way. Makes little bitty tight stitches. I tried a new needle, different thread, took the foot off and put it back on, rethreaded it. Any suggestions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am at my wits end with this thing. It sounds like the problem is in the bobbin case, not in the top tension. Make sure that the top tension is on the number 4, take the bobbin case out of the machine, wind a NEW bobbin and put it in there. Also, make sure that you clean out the area where the hook, bobbin case, and under the needle plate are located. If this all does not help, you may have an issue with the timing of your machine. Please advise.

| Motor Hums, Needle Not Moving
I just bought a Singer 401A. When I mash the pedal, the motor hums but
it does not move the needle. However, if I turn the hand wheel by hand,
the needle does move up and down. If I loosen the knob as to wind a
bobbin, the hand wheel turns but seems slow. However, when I tighten
the needle stop knob back, the motor only hums. My husband looked at

The problem is probably not in the motor, but you probably need a new controller for your sewing machine. There is a simple way to test this: Take the wires off of the controller and put them both together, plug the machine into the wall. This should cause it to have direct currents and the motor should start running at super high speed. If this occurs, then you know that your controller is bad. If it still runs slowly, then you know that your motor needs service. It may have too much oil in it, or need new carbon brushes, etc. In any case, we can supply you with parts for the motor, new motors, or new controllers. Please advise.

I have 2 problems, with 2 different brother machines. The first one the bobbin keeps catching up in big lumps of thread all across the bottom of the material I am sewing. I've re-threaded the top and bottom a bunch of times trying to fix it. I finally moved onto the other brother I had accesible where the needle broke 5-6 times in 15 minutes. I will start to sew and it will be fine and then it makes this noise like something is really loose, the needle seems to be hitting something hard and it just snaps..Help, what am I doing wrong!

Bunching of thread on the bottom of the material is a clear indication of one of three things. First, the machine is not threaded properly- always make sure that the presser foot is in the up position when threading the sewing machine. And when you put the presser foot down, the thread should instantly tighten up. Second, the machine could be out of time- the needle is not going into the hook at the proper time and this causes the machine to bunch up. Thirdly, the tension assembly itself is faulty, the springs and disks are bad and need to be replaced.
When your needles are breaking, the first thing to be done is to change to a brand new needle. Next, make sure that the area under the needle plate, bobbin case, and hook assembly are good and clean. If it still does not work, then the needle is probably hitting the hook and you will need to have your machine re-timed. Please advise.

1: When you put the needle in, you must make sure that the flat of the needle is towards the hook.
2: The needle should go up into the needle holder up to the stop. If it doesn't stop, that means that is the piece that is broken on the sewing machine.
3: The machine could be out of time, meaning that the needle is not coming into the hook at the right point. You will need a mechanic to repair that. If you cannot find one, you could always ship your machine to us and we could give you a free estimate on how much the repair will cost.

| Needle Catches Hook
It's a Kenmore 4 stitch, clunky (metal? enamel?) lovely thing, from the 70's. The model # is (385) 1233280. From previous sewing experience and internet research, I've figured out how to thread the spool/top thread and load the bobbin...
Well, when I first tried to sew, it worked.. sorta. The result was horridly messy, but the fabric moved and all. The bobbin thread became tangled after a few inches. I removed the bobbin and the shuttle to clean things out. Now, the needle gets CAUGHT on the hook of the shuttle whenever I put the bobbin back in. If I turn the dial towards me without the bobbin inserted, no problems.
I've been working with this thing for hours.
If I hold the whole bobbin housing thingy (the part that's held on with the two side latches) while I try to sew (erm.. turn the dial towards me) it seems to work. Thats the only way though. I've noticed it's a bit loose and tried to tighten the screws, no luck. Is it the timing? Could it just be loose bobbin/shuttle housing?

It may be out of time, but it definately needs to be adjusted by a mechanic. Normally, this machine never has any timing problems because the hook is driven by a gear that is pinned to the drive shaft. You may have to have somebody look at it for you. You could have a number of problems with this machine. My best guess is that you are not threading the machine through the tension assembly properly. Make sure that the presser foot is in the up position and that you pull the thread completely through the tension assembly. You should then stop, put the presser foot down, and see if the thread has tightened up. If it has not, you are missing something on the machine.
If this is a brand new machine, it should come with a complete warranty. Check with the person that you bought it from. This entire process may be under warranty, and perhaps the store that sold it to you will give you free lessons.

| Feed Dog Quit Feeding
Hello,
I have a Singer 6230 that was sewing beautifully and then the feed dogs quit feeding. With the pressure foot up, the feed dogs move, with fabric on them and pressure foot down, they don't move at all. Stitch length is fine and I turned it off it in disgust to try again this morning. Feed dogs no longer move constant with foot up, just every now and again. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that the feed dog lever is in the up position. When the lever is in the down position, the feed dogs will show on the top if there is no pressure on them at all. Make sure that the machine makes one complete cycle to check this. Just throwing the switch does not make them come to the surface.
If this does not work, then the feed gear is broken and you will need to take it to a mechanic.

Make sure that you put a NEW bobbin, not a bobbin that has been sitting around for a while, in the machine. If it still does not work, you may need a new driver for your sewing machine. The driver is the part that sits right below the bobbin and is pushed up to engage it when you push the bulls eye. Also, change the needle, make sure that the presser foot is in the up position when winding the bobbin, but that the thread is still completely through the tension assembly. Hope this helps.

| Bobbin Case Popping Out?

I am having a problem with my new purchased (from a garage sale) Singer 6233 and I bought a new bobbin case since the old one was damaged. Now the bobbin case seems to jump and I cannot get the thread to come up. When I can finally get the thread up the threads do not connect to get a stitch. What could be the problem? It cost $80.00 here to get it looked at and then only goes up from there. I cannot that kind of money. Is there a manual to do my own work on this machine and how do I learn to do my own work? Is there classes a person can take.

The problem with your machine is that it is out of time. Unfortunately, this is not something that you can do by yourself. It is not difficult to do, however, you need a trained mechanic who understands the relationships on the sewing machine between the needle and the hook. There is also a timing belt in this machine that will need to be tightened so that the machine does not go out of time again.

I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHCHASED A SIMPLE KENMORE SEWING MACHINE. MOD 15202/15208. IS NOT SO VERY DIFFERENT THEN MY OLD MACHINE. I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS TO THREAD THE BOBBIN. I TRIED TO ADJUST THE BOBBIN WINDER STOPPER, BUT THAT DID NOT HELP. I DID TO ENGAGE THE HANDWHEEL TO SEE IF THE NEEDLE WOULD GO UP AND DOWN, AND IT DID ??? CAN YOU HELP.

When you call, make sure that you have hex keys, a philips head screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver, make sure that you have the bottom of the machine off and a new needle in the machine. First of all, make sure that the machine is in straight stitch forward position. If it is and you are still having a problem, take the top of the machine off and blow hot air from a hair dryer down towards the reverse mechanism. That will unfreeze it.

I have a kenmore sewing machine (home) and when I try to sew, the thread at the botttom is all mangled up , it looks like I don't know how to explain it except there is nothing but big loops on the bottom. Dear Sewing Machine Doctor:
I just bought a Singer 1036 from an estate. I owned a Singer 534. My problem is with the tension. It will sew for a little bit, bunch up on the bottom, then sew again. Also, I tried to use the designs on the machine and all I came up with was a mess. The person who owned the machine has passed away and her grandson was selling the machine and he knew nothing about it. I tried following the directions and am totally baffled. Also, why are the pads the pressure foot sits on smooth instead of with teeth?

Hi Doc!
We have a Singer Machine Model 3317c Honest; that's what's on the machine. We don't have a book or manual.
It's skipping stitches, the top thread isn't interlocking the bottom thread. Some of the stitches are very long...as much as two inches! In some cases it appears the fabric is puckering a little bit. If this is tension how do I set top and bottom tension? I could sure use some help!

I've owned and used my Pfaff 145 for over ten years now, using it on a regular basis for business. I've always been able to monkey around and keep this machine running great alot of my stitching is for show and function. but now it want's to skip a stitch every 6 to 8 inches and I can't get the tension correct. the top thread can just be seen on the bottom and it seams like the bottom tension is either to tight but it can't be backed off any further and the top tension I know is far to tight already. Please help I have a project due.

The bobbin thread , that is the one under your material when you sew, comes out just by pulling at one end. I have found why the upper thread may have problems but this is a first for my machine. The upper stitch is fine or looks fine and when I look underneath the thread that should hold the stitch in firmly is very loose. Can you tell me where I am going wrong with this? Thank you.

When the top thread looks fine and the bottom thread is loose you either mis-threaded the top portion of the machine or there is not enough tension on the top portion. I would suggest that you re-thread the machine before attempting to adjust the tension.

| Floppy Belt
I have a Kenmore 385 Model and I began to hear almost a grinding noise inside. I opened up the machine and found that the skinny belt was "flopping around" inside. I ordered a new belt and it does the same thing. Are there any manuals or diagrams I can look at to see how to make sure the belt is properly placed? Other than this, the machine works great, despite years of sitting idle. One other thing, I am a military family member living in Germany, so I cannot just take it to my local Sears store! Thank you!

| Husky 145 Problems
I have a problem with my sewing machine. I was sewing and ran out of thread on the bobbin. I filled the bottin again and installed it. Then when I went to sew, it would do about 3-4 stitches and stop and just rear up with the needle stuck in the fabric. I made sure that I had tighten the thing on the right side that you loosen up to fill a bobbin. So it wasn't that. I put a new needle in the machine x 3 times. It finally started to sew again, but now the bottom thread is all loose. I've retreaded the machine too. HELP! It's very flustering. I had problems last summer and when I took it to get repaired, they said the timing was off and charged me nearly $80 to fix it. Is this to high? Has the same thing happened again??

First change the needle and inspect the thread handling mechanism- such as the needle plate and the looper- for burrs. If you find burrs, just sand them down with emery cloth. If that is not the problem, then I suggest lowering the tension. The manual is not available to me, and honestly, it would not be very helpful. Where a household sewing machine manual is about 25 pages, an industrial sewing machine manual is only about 8. Let me know if I could help you any further.

| Bobbin Case Slipping?
I've used the same machine a Brother XL6562 for 3 years. My machine gets a lot of steady wear. I make pillows for Ebay and sometimes sew for 8-10 hours a day. Recently it began to let the plastic, top drop-in bobbin pop up......tangle the thread and shoot the needle through the bobbin case. This happens so quickly, you don't have time to stop the machine until it has broken the needle by hitting a hard part on the case. It's as though the tangled thread yanks the bobbin case upward and out of it's original position.
Since the bobbin case is plastic, I assumed I needed a new one. It's $50+ and I could get a newly refurbished machine on Ebay for $98. I opted to purchase a newly refurbished one, (thinking it would have a new bobbin case anyway.)
I purchased the Brother XL6452. It has the exact same top drop-in bobbin and plastic bobbin case. I had only used this new machine 2 weeks before the same thing began to happen.
Now, I'm wondering what I could be doing wrong? I'm using the same bobbins as always (plastic SA156), same thread, and threading as I always have. It just doesn't make sense to me. And, if I take it to the shop.........it could sew fine for a couple days before this behavior
occurs.
The only thing I've realized is that there is a rattling (plastic clatter) right before it occurs, so I can sometimes prevent it from breaking my needle and pulling the entire bobbin upward into a tangle.
I would appreciate any help at all on this matter. Or, any recommendations for a heavy-duty machine that can stand-up to my long
hours of sewing!

It seems to me that the position finger is not holding your bobbin case in properly. Your machine needs to be adjusted properly. Unfortunately, I cannot describe how to do this by an e-mail. If you would like me to recommend a heavy-duty machine for your long hours of sewing, I would recommend a Necchi model 6022 which has a metal bobbin case and a metal hook instead of a plastic one. I recently bought a 221K1 on a trip to New Zealand. I know it is a 240VAC machine, but I built a converter to make it run on 110VAC. I
should have checked it out more carefully before I bought it, but Oh Well, I didn't. Now I have a sewing machine with problems, and I can't
take it back. The first problem I discovered is that all the lubricant dried out, and
it was too stiff to turn. I sprayed the moving parts with Airkroil penetrating oil to loosen it up, and was was met with success. I replaced the needle and wound the bobbin and threaded the machine with new thread. I can bring the bobbin thread up by cycling the machine by hand. This seems to indicate that the machine is timed correctly. If it were not timed correctly the hook wouldn't snag the loop for the trip around the bobbin correct? Any subsequent stitch
taken breaks the upper thread. It looks like the thread is being mis-handled. The hook snags the loop at the needle, but the thread gets fouled behind the bobbin case base.
Any suggestions?

There is thread behind the bobbin case base. You will not see it if you look for it until you take the bobbin case base out. Take the bobbin case base out, remove the thread, reassemble, and your problem will be solved.

Hi there, I have an old Kenmore Ultra Stitch 6 machine that I've had for a long time. I had no problems with it until today when I noticed that the thread started bunching under the material. | Is it the Foot Pedal?

I hope you can help. I am having difficulty with my Singer 6233. It has been getting progressively worse over the past few times I have used it. The difficulty seems to be in the foot pedal. It is the type that pushes air into the machine. It will usually start sewing when I press on it. But in four to five seconds it will die out. I will readjust the pedal or the rubber tube and it will again start to sew and then die down again. Does this sound like a problem only with the pedal? Or is it something more internal? If it is the pedal, do you know where a replacement can be purchased. I logged onto the singer website but didn't see anything there.

| Dear Patti,
Your problem could be either in the foot pedal or in the little plastic piece that you plug it into, which is known as a transducer. The way that you could test to see which item it is, may sound silly but, take the tube ending from the foot pedal and hold your finger over the hole tightly, and press the foot pedal- wait for about 10 seconds and release your finger from the tip of the tube. If you hear a puff of air coming out of it after 10 seconds, the transducer needs to be replaced. I have it available- part # 988549-002 and it costs around $21.00. If you do not hear the puff, then your foot pedal needs to be replaced. I have that available also as part # 979583-001 for around $50.00. The spindle moves nicely - not loosely or tight.
When I run the motor after moving the bobbin winder to the right (and turning the bobbin till it clicks), I can look down inside and there's an area that's trying to move the winder that is trying to turn, it struggles, and you can hear the "revving."
So, I think the problem is further inside than the top winder itself. I can't understand why this would happen to a machine that's less than a year old! The only Brother service center is about an hour away. I'm hoping I could avoid that mess.

| Is It the Timing?
I am having trouble with bobbin thread getting caught on bobbin latch and not completing a stitch. I have taken the bobbin/case and shuttle apart and reassembled several times. Thought I had the problem fixed, then started doing this again. I had sewed for approx 10 min. , stopped for about 2 min. then returned to machine only to have it knot up underneath fabric again. I have consulted local shop by phone and told it is the timing and will be a $55 repair. Would dearly love to avoid such a costly repair. Any suggestions?

I do not believe that your machine is out of time. This may be a case of something very simple. I would recommend that the first thing that you do is change your needle to a new one and re-thread your machine making sure that your presser foot is in the up position and then make sure that after you put the thread through the tension assembly, you put the presser foot down and gently pull on it to make sure that you have the proper tension. | How To Stop Puckering of Material-
I'm trying to hem a t shirt. I can not get the fabric to stop puckering. The original stitch on the hem seems to be a straight stitch on top and a type of zigzag stitch for the bottom stitch. Is this the only way to sew this type of material? If so, do I need a special machine? If I can successfully hem this material with a plain machine, can you tell me what I need to do? I have the tension at 5 and the stitch a straight stitch at a 3 1/2.

The motor on this machine is set for the wrong polarity, that is why it is running backwards. There should be a switch or instructions on the back cap of the motor to tell you how to change the direction of the motor. The back cap is usually held on by three screws. On the inside of the cap there should be wiring details to inform you about the direction change.

Nice to hear from you. If you will take the bobbin winder spindle in your fingers and try to spin it, it will tell a story. If the bobbin spindle moves freely, that is an indication that the bobbin winder ring on the bobbin winder has either fallen off or disintegrated. In that case, the machine needs to be disassembled to replace the bobbin winder ring. It is pretty self-explanatory once the machine is apart. If the spindle does not move freely, than the spindle needs to be oiled. Thorough inspection, you will find and oil hole on the bobbin winder. Be careful not to over-oil, maybe just about 1/2 of a drop. Let me know if you need anything else.

| Threading the Bobbin
Hello--I'm having a great deal of difficulty in threading the bobbin.
I've followed the directions and done exactly what it says numerous
times--however the loop of thread from the bobbin never catches to the
top thread so I can pull it out. From what I can see by they
directions--there is no contact being made between the two threads.
also--in all the instruction pictures it says to leave several inches of
thread laying across top of bobbin toward back of machine and that the
tail should be visible once the cover is back into place--however, no
pictures show what happens to that end after and it is never mentioned
again. I am assuming it is pulled back in by the loop--but again I'm
never getting the loop. Can you help?
PS-I've read and reread the manual--please do not refer me to that, it is not helping. (I've also checked on web sites for additional help but
still not catching. Thanks!)

It may sound odd, however, check to make sure that you have the needle in correctly. If it is not in backwards, your timinng may be off. The term timing refers the shuttle hitting the needle and picking up the thread at the proper time. I wrote awhile ago regarding the right feet to buy for my Juki DDL-8700. Since my machine is new I tried taking the original foot off to put on a welt foot. The screw is extremely tight. Also what can i put on the bobbin winder to make it easier to put on and remove the bobbins? | What's Wrong?

The thread on this machine Singer 241-13 seems to loop on the bottom. I adjusted the tension on the bobbin and finger knob. It will sew fine for 2 inches then the thread will loop on the bottom for an inch then fine for 2-3 inches and so on.
I have the largest needle in the machine I'm sewing sunbrella marine fabric.
Also having thread breakage problems.

The 241-13 was made for doing work in a dress factory. Please be aware that if you are using heavier thread, like a 69 core thread, it wiill not work on this machine. Do not make any of your tension adjustments with tthe bobbin case. This is what is called a constant, meaning you should have it set on one constant pressure. If the stitching is loose on the bottom of the material, you should turn the tension knob clockwise to tighten it up. If it is loose on the top of the material, you should turn the knob counter clockwise. If you are getting bunches of thread on the bottom of the material, it means you do not have it completely in the top tension assembly or the machine is out of time (needle coming at hook at the wrong spot). If you need any further help, please let me know.

I know my tension is off because I have thread looping (bunching) on the bottom however I can't remember when thread is loose on the bottom, which tension do I correct the tension for the upper thread or lower (bobbin) thread? This is being done on a Euro-Pro sewing machine.

Hello, I inheirited an industrial Singer 400W21 sewing machine from my husband's grandmother's estate. She used it in a children's clothing factory in Chicago from 1950 to the 1970's. She was using it before she died. I downloaded the instruction manual from the Internet and have it working, except the manual does not make clear on the upper threading what it means with the "take-up disks" after you have threaded the tension disks and take-up spring. When I try to follow the threading illustration and instructions, the upper thread get wound around a spike-type object surrounded by a metal moveable cage. Can you help me figure out how to correctly thread this machine's "take-up" disks? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I do know how to thread your 400W21. Unfortunately, it is too difficult to describe in an e-mail. If you already have the manual, look carefully at the threading chart and make sure that you move the metal basket away before you begin threading and make sure that you understand that this machine runs counter-clockwise, not clockwise. If you turn the handwheel toward you, it will jam and tangle every time. This machine is very old, WW II vintage. I do recommend strongly that you completely clean and oil this machine before going any further. If I can be of any other help, please let me know.

Sorry, but the manual on this machine is no longer available. This Rex, however, is a copy of an Industrial Singer model 241-12. To thread the machine, first go to the thread guide that is above the tension assembly itself. Make sure that the presser foot is in the up position, bring the thread down through the tension assembly, catch the take-up spring on the way back up to the take-up assembly, then come straight down in the different thread guides until you hit the needle. When you're finished, it should be threaded like a backwards N. The threading is very similar to an old household machine. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me at any time 800-544-5858.

| Thread Breaks
Dear industrial sewing machine man:
I just purchased a Singer Sewing Machine model 5830. Everytime I use it the thread breaks. I have been to the local store and they have told me that I should buy better thread. I have done so, however, it still breaks! Am I doing something wrong?

There are several reasons why your thread would break. The most common reason is that your needle is inserted incorrectly. Check your manual for the proper way to insert the needle and make sure it is done as so. Another reason is that the eye of the needle is too small to carry the size of the thread that you are using. If the thread frays and then snaps, move to a larger needle.

| Stitches Bunch Up on Material
Dear industrial sewing machine man:
I have had my sewing machine for over 30 years and it has always worked fine. After having it in storage for three years, I took it to my local sewing machine store and he told me that the machine was completely out of time. I do not understand. When I tried my machine, I was just getting loops of thread on the material. Is he telling me the truth?

I do not believe that your machine is out of time. Most of the time bunching on the material means that you made a mistake while threading it. Normally if the machine made a good stitch, but skipped, this would be related to the timing of the machine. Even though you have had the machine for many years, I think that a good cleaning and checking your threading would solve the problem.

Every time I try to sew, the needle catches on something and breaks. WHat should I do?

| Check and make sure you are mounting the needle correctly. Also check the toughness of the fabric you are trying to sew.
