My Janome bobbin will not stay in its proper position. It somehow jumps out of place, and the machine tells me to turn off for safety. This has been a problem from day one. I have had it in the shop for this reason several times. Also, if I use the auto. cutter very much, it somehow starts wrapping thread around the bobbin. I keep the machine very clean and change needles every time. What could I do to try and fix it myself? I would appreciate it sooooooo much!

I suggest that you change the knife on the undercutter. You would have to go to an Authorized Janome Dealer to aquire this part.

If it is getting no power at all, it is probably a fuse. The fuse is located in a little black box underneath the base of the machine, but it is NOT an easy job to take the box out, disassemble it, replace the fuse, and then reassemble the whole machine. I suggest you take it to a service center.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A BERNINA 830 ELECTRONIC ON E-BAY;THE MACHINE SEWS GREAT, BUT THE BOBBIN WINDER DOES NOT WORK. THE MACHINE MAKES A SCREECHING NOISE WHEN THE WINDER IS ENGAGED. THE RUBBER "WHEEL" APPEARS TO BE WELL WORN, BUT I WONDER IF THE WHOLE WINDER ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME INPUT ,SO THAT I WILL KNOW WHAT KIND OF COSTS I AM LOOKING AT? Hi! I just found your website and am wondering if you can tell me what the problem is with my sewing machine. I have a Janome 8000, and love it. Problem: Today when I went to use it, I could barely see the screen face-on, I had to look at the screen from the side. Do you know what this means. | Making a Clicking Noise
I have a Brother SE270D and it just started making a clicking noise when I sew, I did everything that Brother said to do, like cleaning the dust and things, but it still makes the noise. I think that maybe it needs oiled but they say to take it to a autheroized dealer, but the closest one to me is an hour away, how can I oil it myself?

Hi
I have a new Kenmore 385.19365. When I turned it on the first time, the display read "bobbin winding". I threaded the machine but now the display is blank. The power light is on but none of the other lights are working and the machine won't do anything. The needle up down doesn't work, I can't turn the display on or anything. I checked that the bobbin winding spindle is in the left position and tried re-threading the machine with no luck. How do you get the machine to sew?

If you are not getting any display, it sounds to me like you have a board problem, however, diagnosing electronics through e-mail is next to impossible. I suggest taking it to a qualified mechanic.

| It sounds to me as if the motor mount is causing the noise, however, it also sounds like you have some sort of pc problem. I am unable to diagnose an electronic machine over e-mail, so you would either have to send the machine to me and I could give you an estimate for free ( you are responsible for the shipping) or you could take it to a qualified mechanic in your area.

I have a Brother CS-100. The lower bobbin suddenly will not turn. I disassembled the needle plate to assure that the overall mechanisms work, which they do; however, the bobbin case does not appear to turn when the
sewing needle is actuated. Please help! My sewing machine will now not sew
any stitches.

| The bobbin case is not supposed to turn- it is the hook that the bobbin case is sitting in that is supposed to turn. Take the base of the machine off and inspect for broken gears or a broken belt.

| I Have a Ghost in My Machine!
I seem to have a "ghost" in my machine. These symptoms happen randomly when the power is on:
* the needle changes positions
* the stich length and/or width change
* all the lights will come on
* too many of the lights will come on i.e. as if three or four selections were made at once
* the lights will twinkle like christmas lights
* the machine will just start sewing (I have observed from across the room several times)
* it refuses to program so I can use the letter cassettes
I took it to my local Viking dealer and they could not find a problem but the machine is still acting up. Ideas?? Do I need to look at replaceing my machine? What is it worth?

It sounds to me as if you need a new main powerboard. It is overheating and the information is being mixed up. I would not go back to the mechanic that said there is nothing wrong with the machine, however, try contacting Viking and tell them that you need a board.

I have singer xl1000 but a few weeks ago the touch screen wouldnt work , i tried turning it off and on but it didnt work . I t might come on a few hours later but when im when finished and i turn it off it comes back up with invisible screen. What could be wrong and can you help, its only out of its guarentee.

It could be something as minimal as a loose cord, but it could be something as drastic as a defective screen or board. This is something that I would have to physically see to be able to diagnose and repair. I suggest taking it to a certified mechanic and have him look at it.

I'm hoping you can help me - I have a Kenmore Sewing Machine Model 385.19150 that keep "locking up" while sewing. The display reads "Overload". The hand wheel will not turn nor will the machine sew. I have to work the hand wheel back and forth until I can get it to work, then it only works for a bit, and we start all over again. I have cleaned and oiled the machine but it hasn't seemed to help. Can you make a suggestion as to why this is happening and how to correct it.

If your machine says overload, you are missing some bushings for oiling or something that would cause the machine to overload. It could even be a faulty strobe on the motor. Re-service the machine ver diligently. Let me know.

| Could It Be the PC Board?
My machine needle broke inside the machine while sewing through layers of denim and since then will only sew a straight stitch about 1/8 inch long. It will not do any other stitches. Have had it to two local repair centers. One, that does not work on Vikings, said it was probably a circuit board. There are 2 stitch plates and the one with the alphabet has not worked for many years, but the other has been doing well. Machine sewed like a dream before this time. Is it worth repairing?

| It sounds like a PC Board to me as well, however, without seeing the machine I cannot comment on whether or not it is worth repairing. I would have to see what the cost factor is. | New CE-200 Problems-
Hi,
Hope you can help. I've had the Singer CE-200 Futura for about 6 months and it's done well. A couple of days ago, while embroidering, it was making a noise, almost like something was sticking. I switched to sewing and it started sewing very jerky - up,down, pause, up, down, pause pause, beep! I took the covers off, oiled it to the best of my ability and tried again, it was jerky for a while, but then started working while still jerking intermittently. Sometimes, when I press the foot pedal, the needle will go down and up and then stop, then when I release the foot pedal, it goes up and down once more on it's own. Now it is extremely jerky and will beep and make me shut it off. Really, it's unusable right now. Any ideas?

| Viking Husqvarna Designer I
I have a Husqvarna Designer I and after embroiderying the same design several times, the machine starts sewing all wrong, like its off calibration. It did this before and after a while it was fine. Could my discs go bad? I've cleaned the machine, unplugged it & plugged it back in. Do you know of a solution to this problem?
I'd never had this problem until I took it to my dealer to have it gone over and updated, this is the 2nd time in about a year its happened? Do you have any suggestions?

| Slight Offset Stitch?
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
Yesterday I received a used Viking 6430 that I took a chance with on eBay. All in all the machine looks unabused and in great condition, though not used in a while judging by the dry grease on some parts inside. I cleaned and oiled it the best I could, freed up the button hole knob, and it works and stitches nicely. The tension is good. I plan to do a better job on it when I receive the service manual I ordered. The Viking operating manual has virtually no information in it about lubrication, unlike my wife's old Singer Touch and Sew 620!
One thing I have noticed though is that the straight stitch has *slightly* more offset to it than I am used to from my old Singer. The stitch width is definitely set to 0. Is this an adjustment issue? Alignment issue? Just the nature of the Viking? Oh and one other thing: the feed dogs are not quite centered in the slots in the plate, they hug the right. Should I be
centering them?
I'm not that picky a sewer--I make my own backpacks, and outdoor clothing--but I do like to have things look right, plus I want to make sure
this great machine works properly.

What do you mean when you say slight offset? If you mean that there is a
slight zig zag, that adjustment is on the buttonhole on the back of the
machine.
You should center your feed dogs by adjusting the bed of the machine.

Yes, you will have to remove the back panel. Once the panel is removed, look down into the machine on the right hand side- it is the ONLY screw head
that you will see standing upwards. Adjust it.

Thanks for the help! Just let me know if I've taken too much of your time. I believe I found the screw in question--it was on a little cam-like part operated by the stitch width/buttonhole knob. But adjusting it hasn't done it. If I loosened that screw enough, I began to see real zig zag in my straight stitch. I then tightened it back. I realized that what I'm seeing
in my stitches isn't a zig zag (I don't think), but more of a misalignment? The holes of the stitches actually line up, which I can see plainly if I run some with no thread . The issue is more that the thread seems to start off
to the side of the end of one stitch as it heads to the next hole. I've enclosed a picture of the stitching.
I notice that two of the teeth on the front of the feed dog on one side have been flattened, I guess by the presser foot at some point--relevant?

Make sure that you are not confusing a slight zig zag with a needle that is running thread to thread on the grain of the material. If in fact the needle is moving side to side, it is the adjustment that I e-mailed about prior. Let me know.

stitching is of small waves. I've inserted the picture below: Perhaps that is normal? I'm thinking if it is anything, perhaps it is a
feed problem? As I mentioned, two of the teeth on the front of the right side feed dog have
been flattened. Is that enough to cause a problem? I adjusted the dogs so that they were centered in the needle plate tracks better, and am now a little worried that I might have altered their motion (though the stitches have been as described since before I messed with the dogs). The tops of the dogs teeth are not parallel with the needle plate through their whole motion--they are slanted front up to back, so that they appear at the back of the track first and the front last, and they are never as high above the
plate in the front as they are in the back. On our Singer, they come out of the slots parallel and pretty much stay that way. Thanks for any

That is a normal stitch. You are using heavy thread and material.

Thanks--I'll assume all is well. Just not used to the Viking. But that wasn't heavy duty thread or cloth, just a very close view. That was Gutterman polyester thread on an old bed sheet, #70 needle.

| Needs to Be Oiled, Maybe?
Hi,
I have a brother psc6400 (I think) it's not a computer machine. Don't have it in front of me. But, it's only about 3-4 years old. Has never been oiled so I am doing that tonight. However, while sewing for about the first few stiches it's smooth as can be. Then, bam, the needle jams and you can tell it has just grabbed onto, what looks like, the entire bit of thread on the bobbin. Really it looks as if it's trying to pull about 5 threads through at one time. Does not matter how much thread is on the bobbin or the tension nor the fabric content. I have rethreaded the top thread several times (I know it's threaded correctly, only shows one way to do it =) I even made sure that I was using the correct size bobbin, etc, etc. This started noy too long ago and I sew roughly 5-10 hours a week. Servicing it is about $70. No thank you if I can do it myself. Any help would be great.

Sorry, but the correct machine that i have is a Brother PS2300. And it doesn't say in the manual whether to oil the machine or not. It says DO NOT oil the shuttle hook or shuttle race.

If you are positive that you are threading the machine correctly, check for chips or burrs in the bobbin case area and buff them out with an emery board.

My question is how do I get my card to be read on my machine. I have tried a viking card with the stitch cassette that is comes with and it works great. I just can't figure out how to use my own designs. Any help with this would be great!!

You are getting the error message because your are jamming the machine. You are jamming the machine because you are mis-threading the top of your machine. Re-thread the top of your machine.

| Cannot Embroider
Hi there, have a Baby Lock Ellure ESL. Serial #E4B113701. All seems okay until I start to embroider.....the arm does it's test move back and forth and off I go.
It gives me an error message....check if thread is entangled (it's not) and Check of needle is bent (it's not). The instruction book further explains that "This message appears when the motor becomes locked, such as when the thread is entangled.
I also notice that I cannot wind a bobbin either.

A thread entanglement is a mechanical thing and you can only determine if all of the thread is out of the machine by taking the front of the machine off, which I don't suggest you do.
As far as the bobbin, I need more information to be able to help you. I suggest taking the machine into a mechanic.

Your machine is out of time. It could be that either the timing belt is worn, the idler pulley is loose, or something as simple as a gear is loose. If you would like to repair the machine yourself, you could call me on my tech-help line at 732-335-8902 between 4pm and 6pm EDT every weekeday but Thursdays. Have the bottom of the machine off when you call.

You either need to take the machine apart and tighten the connection (which I do not suggest that you try) or take it to an certified Pfaff mechanic and have him do the job. Help!! We have a Lily 530 on which the feed dog height adjustment knob/screw had fallen off, resulting in clacking and lack of feed. In the process of removing the assembly to replace the part, I removed the bobbin drive and now timing is off. I've tried 1/4" up from bottom dead center w/ tip of the hook just behind the needle. Is this the right setting? Also, for some reason, the machine will only run in reverse.....what did I do wrong? How is reversing accomplised on this machine, and what is the proper direction of rotation of the hand wheel for forward?
I know, lots of questions, but thanks in advance.....I'm in deeply!

My machine is now acting strange I have replaced the needle and changed the bobbin dusted it ect.
The top thread is catching on the bobbin and getting tangled in the bobbin area also causes the bobbin case to come loose and wiggle around causes needles to break and ect.
Can you help, please

Start from the very beginning. Make sure the bobbin case is in properly and properly cleaned, make sure that the needle is in properly, the bobbin is threaded properly, the top is threaded properly, etc. Unfortunately, this is the only information that I can give you because in your e-mail you stated that the bobbin case jumps out- if there was any part, the postion finger for example, that was knocked out of adjustment, you will need to take it to a mechanic to have them adjust it for you. Let me know how you make out.

| Step Motor Error
I have a Kenmore model # 385. 19150090 and it won’t run. On the LCD screen it displays “ step motor error “. I read the manual and it says nothing of this. I turned it off and on and sometimes the screen goes back to normal but as soon as I touch the petal the machine moves a little then it stops with the “step motor error” on the message screen. Can you please help me? John.

It could either mean that your machine needs to be serviced. This step motor error indication could mean that the machine is not running freely and rather forcing the motors to overwork. Or it could mean that your step motor is burned out. In that case you would need to contact Kenmore to replace the motor. 99% of the time, however, they do not burn out, they are only frozen. In that case, you would need to thoroghly service the machine.

It sounds to me as if you are not putting the thread in the spring for the bobbin winder. A quick fix for this is to feed the thread on with your fingers as the machine is running.

It definately sounds like a timing problem to me, and the timing problem could be caused by several things. The timing belt can skip teeth- the remedy for that would be to replace the belt and then re-time the machine (this is something you can do yourself while I walk you through on my tech-help line). It could also be an idler pulley that is damaged or loose. The remedy for that would be to adjust or replace the idler pullley and adjust the timing. The third and simplist thing that could be the cause is the screws on the hook shaft gear may have vibrated loose and caused the hook to advance out of timing. The remedy for this would be to re-time. Let me know how you make out.

It sounds to me as if your contrast is too dark. Adjust your contrast as per your instruction manual. I have never heard of a machine with a screen that does not light up but will still sew. That is what I based my answer on- if it still sews, it must be something simple just overlooked. Let me know how it turns out.

| My New Home Sews, Then Jams
I hope you can help. My daughter has a New Home sewing machine which has not performed well since it was purchased new. It will sew along for a while and then the thread jams under the feed dogs. It is really a mess and difficult to remove the article being sewed as well as the thread mass. We took it back to the dealer (one that has been in business for many, many years) twice, but to no avail. They couldn't find anything wrong with it and said it was being threaded wrong or it was cheap thread. We laid out the instructions book, followed the directions to a "T" and used Gutermann thread. It still jammed. If threading and thread was the problem, why would it still sew well for a while and then jam? I asked the dealer that question but received no satisfactory answer.
I have sewed for many, many, many years but cannot figure out what is wrong with this machine. It is frustrating, irritating, etc.

| I am sorry, but, unless there is no damage in the bobbin area such as burrs or scratches for the thread to catch on, the only reasonable cause would be mis-threading the top of the machine. My sewing machine sews a few stitches and then makes a clunking noise and when I inspect the sewing there is lots of thread in bulk underneath. I have tried changing the needle and the thread but this still happens. The computer part of the machine is working okay, can you suggest anything. Thanks.

| Make sure that you are threading your machine correctly, that the needle is in right, and that there are not chips, burrs, or scratches in the bobbin case area. Clean out the area again, and give it a try.

| Problems with My Pfaff 2020
Hello,
I have a Pfaff Tiptronic 2020 and am experiencing something new that I can’t seem to figure out how to fix it, even after looking through the entire manual.
Normally, when I release from pressing on the foot pedal, the needle stops immediately. It recently started to not stop immediately, and continue with 5 stitches (at a slower speed), with all 5 stitches moving forward.
I did contact the dealer in which I purchased it from and at first she said it sounded like lock-stitching, but then the owner informed her that my model did not have lock-stitching. They suggested bringing it in for service (which currently I do not have the funds for), but to me it’s not like the machine is not working, it’s just adding these extra “unwanted” stitches.
I thought I would try searching the internet for any help I could possibly find when I ran across your website. As I wrote in my subject line, any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

| 8000 Will Not Accept Memory for Buttonholes
The built in buttonholer and the buttonhole attachment for my Elna 8000 computer sewing machine will not accept the memory for buttonholes or the attachment will not make second side of buttonhole. Could this be a problem with software, a chip or a mechanical problem. I have taken this machine to a local sewing machine repair and he refused to look at this particular machine.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

| Realigning the Plate?
Hi,
I have a Elna 6004 and I recently had to remove the thread plate to get to my drop-in bobbin case because I had a threrad jam. After clearing the jamb, I went to replace the thresd plate and can't get it to set in properly. Plus, when turning the knob that makes the needle and feed dog go up and down, I noticed the feed dog comes up and actually lifts the plate up. What am I doing wrong? How do I realign the plate so that it sets properly?

| Pfaff 1475 Presser Foot Lever Problems
I have a Pfaff Creative 1475 which I decided to use after many years of storage in its’ carrying case.
This is my problem. The presser foot lever will neither raise nor lower the foot. It seems “locked” in the lowered position for some reason. I have tried checking the manual but to no avail. I don’t force it up for fear of snapping it off. Can you help me?

I am getting Step Motor Error when I power up. I have had this machine in 2 times and when I brought it home this time I turned it on I did not get the error. So I turned it off and wanted to sew 2 weeks later. Turned on the machine and I get Step Motor Error again. Any ideas.

| XL-1000: Fabric Packed Into Feed Area
I have a Singer quantum XL1000...and it has been an excellent machine. Just recently, I was sewing a very light weight halloween type fabric and in doing a zig-zag the fabric packed into the feed area...and bent my needle. I carefully cut away the fabric and took tweezers and gently cleared
the area and used my air to clear out the lint. I put in a new needle and now my needle will not pick up the bobbin thread. My Dad suggests that maybe it needs to be "timed" or something. Any ideas?

| Singer XL-3400- Computer Problems
I have a Singer Quantum XL-3400 that I purchased new a couple of years ago. Today when I tried to adjust the stitch length, stitch width, as well as advance through the stitch options the “computer” didn’t respond. Stitch length would only adjust with the “-“ button, but didn’t respond when “+” was pushed. Stitch width couldn’t be adjusted either direction, and when changing between Stitches I could only advance forward using “+” but the “-“ was not responding. I tried turning the machine off and on, but it still did not respond. This happened one other time about a year ago, and I thought it was just a glitch… until it happened again today. Is this something that can be repaired, or will it require a new computer brain for my machine?

| Singer CE-200 Problem
I have a Singer Futura CE-200 Embroidery machine. I am having problems embroidering a polyester double layer throw. These are the throws that have been out in the stores for a while for traveling or kids. Just a light weight throw. I was trying to embroider on them and my thread keeps breaking. I have moved up from a #9 needle to a #11 needle, thinking that was the problem. Why would the thread be breaking?

No, just on the polyester throws. I used a tear away stabilizer behind it. I tried rethreading my needle several times and it still would break. A friend of mine said it was the throw material.

I have a Pfaff sewing machine. I have the 7570 model. When I go to sew a patter from the memory the machine tells me to raise the pressure foot- the pressure foot is already raised. I turned off the machine and disconnected the embroidery unit and plugged it back in. Any help would be great.

| Illuminates, But Won't Run
Hi,
I recently was given a Singer Creative Touch 1036 machine that appeas in very good cosmetic condition. However, when i plug it in the light and front panel illuminates but the machine won't run when I step on the foot pedal. It does nothing. I hear nothing at all. | It sounds like the transformer to me. A new transformer costs around $125.00. I could get you one, however, I would definately want to see the machine before hand to make sure that it is in fact the transformer. If you would like more information, please let me know.

| Janmore 10000 Stopped Embroidering
Hi,
I have a Janome 10000 embroidery machine. It stopped embroidering in the middle of a project. the handwheel would not move at all. I took it to a dealer and they said that it was thread jam. I brought it home and tried it right away to find out that I could not embroider because the carriage would not move to the right. Is this something that they did in the repair? I never had that problem before.Now I am afraid that the machine will never be the same. They are telling me that it is out of calibration. Does that sound right?? I don't know how much this will cost me but I know that I spent quite a bit on it already.. Do you have any idea what could do that? I really would appreciate some answer.

It does sound as if your machine is out of calibration. Something like forcing the needle through a thread jam would cause this. The dealer should have corrected the calibration problem when he had your machine. This is not an expensive repair.

Underneath the bobbin, while its winding, there is a small round black plastic piece. That piece is the cutoff. Turn that piece either left or right to adjust the cutoff timing. There is no set way of doing it, you just have to move it back and forth until you get the desired adjustment.

Hi, I own a sewing machine Husqvarna Viking 500 model. The side movement of the needle suddenly stop working, preventing me to do things like zig-zag, but I can sew in a straight stitch without a

I already check the cable from the board to the step motor and seems to be Ok.

Interchange the needle cable with the feed cable, run the machine. If the needle starts moving back and forth in an irradic way, that tells you that the needle stepper motor needs to be replaced. If that is not it, more than likely it is the main board.
