| Singer 6423 Worth?
I have a chance to purchase a 1996 Singer model # 6423. The only thing wrong with it is the needle can't be moved to the left or right. The zig zag stitch & all the other stitches work fine. What is it worth & where can I purchase a owners manual? If I purchase it I would have it professionally cleaned & oiled.
Thank You Elmira
| 7/21/2006 |
| Dear Elmira,
The 6423 does not have an independent feature that moves the needle left or right- other than the zig zag. There is no feature for needle position on that machine. Manuals for that machine are available on www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95 + shipping.
According to the sewing machine blue book, the 6423 is worth $126.00.

| Somger Stylist
Dear Sew Vac Doctor,
I recently lost my Singer Stylist in a house fire, from the huge amount of water from the firefighters. The machine was purchased in 1978(a gift from my parents) and was a Stylist with zigzag, and internal 4-step buttonhole capacity, and a solid machine with a lot of metal. Also had some detail/decorative stitching internal capability, and blind hem stitch. I think it was a 500 series, maybe 400 series.
I need to claim this on my insurance, and then buy a machine similar in value. Do you have any idea how much this machine would have been in 1978, and how much a comparable machine would be today?
Thank you.
Nancy
| 7/12/2006 |
| Dear Nancy,
Without knowing the exact model number, there really is no way for me to determine. The 400 series machines go for $9.50-$19.00 and the 500 series machines go anywhere between $14.50-$42.00.
Thank you, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

I bought my mom a Bernina at a yard sale. I am trying to find out what it may be worth. I believe it is a 730 model. On the front is a gold medalion with "75 JHREGEGAUF" on it. Also printed on the front of the machine is "RECORD" . On the part of the head is written "70 Made in Switzerland". It is in a wooden cabinet. It came with a compartment tray, it looks like it attaches to the machine or cabinet in some way. We haven't figured it out yet. The tray had 11 additional sewing feet in it, several bobbins. Can you help me out? Denise

Could you help me solve this mystery? The only numbers I could find on my mother's Singer sewing machine are AB296401 on the machine and this number on the wood cabinet 46696. Could you give me any information on it and what it would be worth? It is in mint condition with bobbins, etc. Thank you Vickie

I would need to see a picture of the machine- the numbers that you have given me do not help. | I Found a Singer 457 in the Trash....
Hi, I found a Singer 457 in the trash. I tried sewing with it and it broke a needle. I took it to a repair shop and the mechanic says he will fix it for $69.00 plus the price for the gear and missing knobs. Is it worth fixing this machine or should I put it back into the trash? If I get the gear and knobs replaced and tension knob tightened, is there anything else likely to go wrong with it or will it be useable for the next 30 years? How old is this machine, by the way? I'm guessing it's from the late 70's.
Thanks! Tammi
| 4/4/2006 |
| Dear Tammi,
It sounds to me as if this repair is going to cost you around $100.00 with the parts. In my opinion, you could purchase a new machine for $200.00- and there is no telling if the repaired machine will run perfectly for the next 30 years.
Thank you, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Regency Sewing Machine Manufacturer
Hello. Perhaps you could help me. I inherited a Regency Deluxe Zigzag Sewing Machine, Model 710-BB. All I'm trying to do is figure out what company actually made this machine and why can't I find anything out on the web about it. My curiosity is killing me. No where in the manual or on the machine do I have any clues, except that on the motor is the following: Dyanmic Sewing Motor, Serial # 2506, Toyko, Japan. Does this perhaps mean that an American company had a joint-venture with a Japanese company to make their sewing machine? Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Jan
| 2/10/2006 |
| Dear Jan,
An American company purchased a bunch of machines from a Japanese manufacturer and slapped their name on it.

| When Was My Machine Manufactured?
I have an old and Very heavy singer I think the model # is AG 895386 in the original sewing cabinet it came with. There isn't a power cord with it anymore. I'm not even sure it even still works I just bought it because it is old and I think a beautiful machine. But was wondering how old it really is. Thanks Marla
| 2/2/2006 |
| Dear Marla,
According to the sewing machine blue book, your machine was produced in the years 1947-1948.
I can get you the power cord for your machine if you would like as well. Let me know.

My mother has a Viking 6170 Series sewing machine. She is in bad health and wants to get rid of things to be able to move into a small home behind me. I have offered to buy it from her, but want to know what it is worth...Do not want to cheat her, she needs all the money she can get. She says the timing is off or something like that. | Montgomery Ward Sewing Machine Value
My dad has a Montgomery Ward sewing machine model UGH-1335A that he said belonged to his mother. He kept it running for a very long time, and it is still in good condition. I estimate it should be from the 1940s. Might you have an idea of its value? I have checked many websites, incluf\ding ebay, and have had no luch finding anything like it. Any help you could give would be apreciated. Thanks, Chuck
| 2/2/2006 |
| Dear Chuck,
I am sorry to say, but that machine is not worth really anything, however, sentimental value is priceless. Montgomery Wards never prduced any sewing machines, rather, they had other companies produce machines for them and slapped their name on it.

| Singer Blue Book Value?
Dear industrial sewing machine man, I tried to research the age of my Singer on the internet. The only useful site that came up is yours. Do you mind looking up the age of my Singer? It's a portable electric, and its number is G0809730
thank you, Caroline

Your machine was manufactured between 1909-1959.

| Is My Machine Worth $100.00?
I am borrowing a Singer but it has no model number. It says Electronic Control under the word Singer on the machine. The instruction book is copyright 1994. My friend claims she bought it on QVC a year ago and wants $100 for it. It is a 5-stitch, 3-needle position. The zig-zag is "infinite" - can get any width and length. There are 5 decorative stitches including a blindstitch. No darning foot attachment so I cannot free-motion quilt, but it does claim to do a simple darning with a plastic thing put over the feeddogs. So did QVC sell an old machine? Is it worth $100? Thank you, Alice
| |
| I would need to see a picture of the machine to be able to answer that for you.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
RE: Thanks for your response. I found the model number: 57825C. (I had assumed it was a serial no.) I found a picture online at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8239305419
RE: They sold for about $99-$100 retail. You could buy a machine brand new for $100.00.

I took it to get cleaned up 35.00 and now should I sell it or keep it to use?
Darlene Mills
| |
| Dear Darlene,
That is up to you. You could sell that machine for around $50.00, but that is about all you would get for it. It really is up to you. That machine was top of the line back in the early 60's.

| Sears Kenmore 148.231
Can you tell me the year that the Sears Kenmore sewing machine was built with the model number of 148.231 and serial number of 29398. Any light you can shed on this would be most appreciated. Thank You, Caroline
| |
| Dear Caroline,
Since Kenmore never actually manufactured any sewing machines, I would need to see a picture of your machine to be able to determine which sewing machine company did, and from there I would be able to tell you what year (roughly) is made.
If you are going to send me a picture through e-mail, please do not send it as an attachment as I am unable to open them. Just copy and paste the picture onto the e-mail itself.

| Singer 750
Dear industrial sewing machine man, Is the Model 750 Singer Portable a machine that is basically all metal? When did this portable first come on the market, and was it made in the USA ? Is this portable a for runner to the 750 Touch & Sew ? Was this a popular machine in its time? Would appreciate your help. Thanks Don
| |
| Dear Don,
The two machines that you are talking about are one in the same. It is 90% metal- all but the gears and the cosmetics. It was a very popular machine and it was made in the USA.

| What is a Reasonable Cost for Repairing a Machine?
My Viking Husqvarna 990 stopped working. I was sewing through denim and it lost power. A repairman says that it needs a new power pak(?) which is located under the right side of the machine where the power cord plugs into it. Another repairman I spoke with said that it would be very unusual for this part to go out. It’s hard to know who to trust and since this machine belonged to my deceased mother it has sentimental value but has also been a great machine. Any advice or help you can give me would be appreciated. I would be interested in knowing what is a reasonable cost for repairing a machine? Though I love this machine I don’t want to spend more than a new machine would cost.
Thank you, Lanette
| |
| Dear Lanette,
The power pak that the mechanic is speaking of is known as a transformer. This box transforms AC power into DC power. I have had great success in taking the transformer apart and finding a fuse blown inside. This may or may not be the problem, but it is not unusual for a transformer to burn out. The cost of the transformers are about $125.00 complete and it is only one plug in and four screws to replace it. I would charge you about a $25.00 bench charge, if that is all the problem is. I hope this is enough information

| How Old Is My Machine & Who Made It?
Sew doctor I cannot begin to tell you how I thank you for your response. Any way I got home and began to take pictures of this great old machine. Every thing underneath looks brand new, at least used very little. Here are a couple of pic's of the machine. Thank you again very much Jack PS. Do you know the age and who made machine
| |
| Dear Jack,
Looks like a 15 class Singer that was made in 30's or 40's. I have all of the parts and attachments for that machine available.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
RE: Sew Doctor You had said you could send directions for threading the machine. Also do you have the maintenance and repair Manuel for this machine, and what kind of attachments are available? Again thanks Jack
RE: Dear Jack,
The instruction manual will give you a sense of maintenance on the machine.
If you go to www.sewingandvac.com and look at any of our attachments- the ones that have "low shank" in the description will all fit your machine. The instruction manual is $16.95. If you would like to order anything, or need any futher assistance, please call 1-800-544-5858.

| Is My Singer 758 Worth Putting This Much $$ Into?
I have a Singer Touch and Sew II, Model 758, sewing machine. The bottom stitching is not tight; the stitches are inconsistent, and I have never been able to sew knits so they stretch well. I have taken it in to a service center and have been informed that I need new feed dogs, replacement of the cam stand, and an adjustment. The estimated cost is over $150. Is this a good enough machine to put that kind of money into it, and insure reliability, or should I look for a new basic machine? I sew all types of fabrics, but do more general sewing and repair now. For instance, I'm making valence using polyester material. What models would you recommend to investigate?
| |
| That machine is not worth putting $150.00 towards a repair. I could repair your machine for $29.95 + the cost of shipping and the cost of parts.
If you only need the feed dogs, I have them for $14.95. If you need a cam stack gear, which I highly doubt, I have them for $14-$15.00.
Let me know if you would be interested.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Dressmaker Machine
I have a Dressmaker sewing machine that my mother gave me when I was a kid. Model 4725 serial 1603M. It is in the case that unlocks from the sides. It has the book and tools. Excellent condition that looks like it was never used. Perfect on everything. The peddle is also included. It is old and was wondering what you thought it was worth? I really need some money and was thinking of putting it on ebay but not sure of the starting price. Could you help me out with a price and I could also send you some pictures of it to look at. If you tilt it up you can see a opening under the machine that hides the book. It weighs about 40 pds. Thanks
Hope you have a wonderful day!
Debbie
| |
| Dear Debbie,
Unfortunately, your machine is only worth about $35.00.

| Is This A Good Price to Fix My Singer Featherweight?
Hello, I was reading with interest your website and hope you can shed some light on my problem. I have the above machine which stopped working. I took it to my local sewing repair shop, thinking it was the foot controller and was informed that the motor had gone out and they were going to charge me $300 to replace (not with a genuine Singer motor but a new replacement). I decided to hold off because I felt this was too much. Recently, I purchased a motor from E-Bay and this doesn’t work either. My mother has the same machine and I took my controller and plugged it into her machine and hers didn’t work. This leads me to believe that it might have been the controller all along and it sickens me to think that the repair shop might have been trying to mislead me. What do you think? Thank you for any advice you may have for me!
| |
| I cannot tell you without testing the machine myself. You could draw direct leads to the motor leads on the machine to test to see if it works. Sorry, I could not have been of more help.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Brother VX-1100
Hi, I am wondering if a used Brother VX-1100, in very good condition, is worth $60? I have looked all over the internet and have only been able to find out that they were sold around 1994. Thank you!!! Margaret
| |
| Dear Margaret,
That sounds a bit high to me- the machine only retailed brand new for $99.00.

| Inherited Machine
Can you give me information on my inherited machine? It is a singer featherweight that says "AK436797" on the bottom. It was my grandmothers machine and I am thrilled to learn more about it. Looks as if the machine was serviced just prior to being stored, but I think the timing is off. (Thread doesn't catch to make stitches). Can you help? Thank you, Rhonda Nelson
| |
| Dear Rhonda,
Your machine was produced in the 1940's or 50's and it is very unusual for those machines to go out of time. Check the needle to make sure that it is in the machine properly- with the flat side to the right of the machine.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Info On My Machine
De Luxe Precision Japanese model of a Singer 15.
I have recently aquired one of these types of sewing machines but can not find any info regarding the paticular make & model of the one that I have. Can you help me?
I have a De Luxe Precision Sewing Machine "Dressmaker Special". All I know regarding this machine is what the labels say. The actual machine is Japanese made but the motor on it is a Westinghouse and it is built into a wooden cabinet.
Please let me know if you could help? Maybe suggest where I could get more info or should I just take it to an antiques dealer and have them look at it?
Thank you,
Amanda
| |
| Dear Amanda,
Since the labels are pinned on to your machine, that tells me that it is a model of machine that was mass produced by one company and then several other companies would pin thier name on it and sell as their own. Basically it is a homogenous model machine. Sorry I couldn't have been much more help.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Worth Fixing?
Viking 990 does not power up, even with new foot pedal and cord, any hope it's anything other than main board, if it is board is it worth fixing? Any idea of cost?
| |
| It sounds like the transformer to me. A new transformer costs around $125.00. I could get you one, however, I would definately want to see the machine before hand to make sure that it is in fact the transformer. If you would like more information, please let me know.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
RE: ok, Thanks! Also, do you know the difference between a Husqvarna viking 990 and a 990s?
If the above machines do not have any problems is it necessary to have them serviced since they do not need to be oiled, I've never had my 990s serviced, I do keep it cleaned. I just purchased a used 990 for my daughter, I haven't discovered the difference between the two. How do I find a sewing machine blue book? i would like to know there value according to the blue book.
Thanks again
Karen
RE: Dear Karen,
I can get you a sewing machine blue book for $24.95.
According to the blue book, the Viking 990S is worth $391.50. There is no listing for a Viking 990.

| Worth of a Singer 6233?
Dear industrial sewing machine man:
My mother recently passed away and my dad would like to sell her sewing machine, Singer Model 6233. Mom was a dressmaker and kept the machine well maintained. She used it almost everyday since she bought it, sometime around 1984-85 to our best recollection. We have a possible buyer for the machine, but we don't know what it is worth today in the good condition it is in. Can you advise us or send us in the right direction to get the information we are looking for?
Thank you for your help.
Barbara
| |
| Dear Barbara,
Your machine is worth $51.50 according to our sewing machine blue book. That is also assuming that it is in mint condition, however, remember that the blue book price is wholesale, so in your case, for resale, you would double the $51.50.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Singer 401A
I AM TRYING TO FIND THE VALUE OF MY GRANDMOTHER'S SEWING MACHINE MODEL 401A IT HAS A DESK TOP AND THE SEWING MACHINE LIFTS OUT FROM INSIDE THE DESKTOP . IT HAS 2 DRAWERS AND A STOOL . IT LOOKS LIKE A LITE ALMOND COLOR.

| Is This a Good Deal?
I recently purchased a MW Model 30 sewing machine in the wood cabinet at a garage sale for $30. The machine looks new and the cabinet has only water stains on the outside top. The inner cabinet that folds out is great. Did I get a good deal?

| Dear Monica,
Absolutely!

| 16-260 Lewis Blind Stitch
Do you know anything about a Lewis 16-260 industrial blind stitch sewing machine? We cannot seem to figure how to use it. Is it worth trying to sell and how much is it worth?
| |
| Dear Bob,
Sorry, this machine is very old. You can probably get it to work for your own use, but it will not have any value if you try to sell it. Unfortunately, the manual for that machine is no longer available, however, it works like any other blindstitch so maybe you could contact your local sewing machine store and ask about a manual for a blindstitch to assist you with how it works.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Value of a Kenmore?

| Should I Sell My Singer?
hi, I'm just wondering if you could let me know if it is worth selling a 1956 singer 191 sewing machine with the manual and the original case. it is in working condition .
thanks, Effie
| |
| Dear Effie,
I believe that the model that you are referring to is 1591, not a 191, and indeed it is worth it for you to sell it. You could probably get at least $100.00 for it.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| Necchi 544-
Sir I just purchased a necchi 544 ,looks good but just found out it does not feed the material thru. I adjusted the dial, the foot moves back and forth but it does not come up enough to grab the cloth. Is this a good machine or another piece of junk. please email me your input.
Thanks manny
| |
| Dear Manny,
That is a good machine. I would just take it to a repair shop and have it cleaned and serviced.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man

| How Old Is My Singer?
I have an old treadle singer sewing machine with a reg # G8123514 on it and want to know how old it is. Any ideas where I can find this information? Norma R.

| Should I Bother Selling My Machine?
I have a Singer Model 27, created in 1905. Do you think I should bother selling it?
Thanks.
Melissa
| |

According to my sewing machine blue book, that model machine is worth around $30.00. I would take a look on e-Bay to see what they are going for there- you might be able to get more.
Thank You, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
|
| Singer 185J
Dear industrial sewing machine man:
I have a Singer model 185J. It is a small machine- it only does a straight stitch, forward and reverse. I have heard of small Singer machines that are worth a lot of money. Do I have a sewing machine that is worth a lot of money? If so, where can I sell it?
Looking forward to hearing from you, Nora Phillips
| |
| Dear Nora,
Your Singer model 185J is a wonderful machine, it sews well, and will give you years of service, but it is not the sought-after model 221 Singer Featherweight. Your machine is worth $20.00-$25.00 to a dealer who would re-sell it for about $60.00. I would look on e-Bay to get comparable prices for the machine. Keep in mind the condition of your machine.
Sorry to disappoint you, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
|
| Mother's Old Machine
Dear industrial sewing machine man:
Recently my mother passed away and left me her beautiful black sewing machine with gold trim. The machine is well over 60 years old. My girlfriend has told me that old machines are worth a lot of money. Is this true? Where can I sell it?
Ms. Kate Benis
| |
| Dear Ms. Benis:
Some old machines are worth money, but 90% are worth very little. You must understand that in the beginning part of this century, everyone had a sewing machine. Isaac Singer sold more sewing machines in 1920 than all of the sewing machine companies sold last year. Even though your sewing machine may be in perfect condition, it may not be worth that much. I would keep it for sentimental value. If you wish to sell it, I would first look on e-Bay for a similar model. If you want to send me the model number, I will also try to help you discover its worth.
Thanks, Industrial Sewing Machine Man
