Can you tell me what the standard tension number for the top of machine should be on. I have had this machine a long time and loaned it out. It

| Dear JoAnn,
There is no standard tension for any machine to be set at. They start at four when they are brand new, however, after years and years the springs become compressed. You could start at four and then play around with it from there. If you are getting loops underneath the material, you are threading the machine incorrectly.

Thank you for your informative web site. I am hoping you can help me. I am fairly new to sewing, and received a beautiful Brother CS 100 for a gift. As I am in the process of trying new projects, one I am trying is pajamas. I understand a serger would be quite helpful. Is that a part that I could attach to my machine? Or, is it a separate machine? Could you please point me in the right direction?

A dedicated serger is a separate machine. It will give you the best quality serging stitch. There are also attachments that you could buy that replicates the serging stitch at a lesser quality.

| I apologize, but I do not understand the question- is what horizontal or vertical? If you are referring to the needle shaft, it is either short shank or super high shank or high shank, but I would have to see either one of your presser feet or your machine to be able to determine that.

Interlocking means that the threads interlock with one another. Overlocking is the name of a sewing stitch. It locks the threads over the edge of the material.

Place a full bobbin on the table, the thread should come off of the bobbin in a clockwise manner. Inspect your bobbin case. You will see in the front of the machine there is a slot and if you look to the left of that slot there is a groove. Drop the bobbin in the bobbin case and pull the bobbin thread from right to left into the slot until you reach the groove. Lay the thread accross the bobbin. Good luck!

Yes, your machine does do quilting. There is no way to drop the feed dogs, however, you could use a feed cover plate which serves the same purpose. It should be listed in your manual under accessories. I have it available at www.sewingandvac.com as part number 313117 for $11.95. | "Thread Separator"?
In my Aug. 29,2005 letter relative to an Athena 2000 and the removal of the left end of the housing to allow access to the tension separator and the tension discs, I called it "a thread separator ". There is one screw to be removed but there appears to be some other fasterner that is not obvious.

| There is screw near the needle bar on the inside of the head. That is a flat head screw. Then there is a very small hex set screw (if you look at the machine from the back, there is a small hole in the upper right hand corner of the machine) which needs to be loosened to remove the door.

I have a JC Penny sewing machine that is a sanshin product. It is from the 70's I think. I cannot find any information on it. I have no manual. The serial # is H26016. It is in a sewing cabinet. It is a side loader and has JC Penny on the front and also super deluxe. I need help with what way the needle goes. I also have other questions but the manual would help. Any ideas?

Can you tell me how to tighten the bobbin tension on my Singer 534 Stylist. It has a horizon bobbin case and only the bobbin comes out. There is no tension at all on that thread.

If you getting loops on the bottom of your material, you need to re-thread the top of your machine. I say this because it is very rare when you will have to adjust the bobbin tension. But if you must, looking straight down at the bobbin as a clock- at 6:00 is the bobbin tension adjustment- lefty lucy, righty tighty. Hope this helps.

| Filling the Bobbin on a Singer 600E
I have a Singer Touch and Sew Model 600E. I have forgotten how to fill the bobbin and the instruction manual has been lost for years. I have opened up the bobbin cover. Put the thread around the bobbin and tried to fill it. I can't stop the foot feed from going up and down. There is a bar lever and a white button. I have tried filling with the button pushed down or up and it doesn't seem to make any difference.....Judie

Thread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button to the right. Begin to start the machine. After about five seconds of running the machine, stop, unwrap the thread from the screw, and remove it from the machine and continue to run the machine. You will note that the bobbin is winding. When you have wound enough thread onto the bobbin, stop the machine, shut the bobbin case slide door, and begin to sew.
I do suggest that you have an instruction manual for just such purposes. There are many other "quirks" that can be explained through the manual. We have these available at www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95.

You will need your manual for this because a description may just confuse you, but I'll try.
Start with a spool of thread on your spool pin. Draw it to the right of the machine to a round-shaped guide. This is your bobbin winding spring mechanism. Wrap it around this round-shaped spring (it does not look like a spring, however, it looks like a metal cup). Go underneath this metal cup front to back and draw it back to the bobbin winding pin. Thread your bobbin inside out, place it on the spindle, push the entire bobbin on the spindle to the right, release the clutch, and begin to wind your bobbin, holding onto the thread that is sticking out of the top of the bobbin. While you are winding, this thread should break off in your hand. Then push the bobbin to the left, take it off of the spindle, re-engage your clutch, thread the bobbin case and the top of the machine and you are ready to sew.

| What Does "Step Motor Error" Mean??
I have a model l915 Kenmore machine. While rewinding the bobbin I got a message "step motor error" and it would do nothing else. Sears says it is the "control board" and wants $473.00 to fix it. Is it something my husband could replace if I bought the part or is that even the problem. The machine probably has not been used over 30 hours.

Unfortunately, that indicating that your stepper motor board is no good. I would not even suggest getting that machine, rather buy a new one. I also would not suggest having you purchase the board and having your husband replace it. Sorry.

| Take the thread from the spool in the lower right front corner of your machine, take the thread from the spool to the spring, to the bobbin. Engage the bobbin. Before winding the bobbin, hold onto the outer wheel on the right hand side of your machine with one hand while loosening the silver wheel with your other hand. This stops the needle from going up and down. Run the machine and the bobbin should wind. After the bobbin is wound, be sure to engage the inner silver wheel by turning it away from you.

I just dug out the singer 533 it seems to be in working condition other than needs to be cleaned and maybe sew a little with some emory cord heheh .. could you tell me please which direction the needle should be facing on this machine and also I'm not sure about the direction of the threading process ,,,

As a rule of thumb, the flat side of the needle always goes towards the opposite side of the last thread guide. So on your machine, since the last thread guide is in the front of the needle bar, the flat side of your needle goes toward the rear. The needle threads front to back. | Bobbin Sizes??
I work in a fabric store and we carry bobbins for Singer machines and generic bobbins. I have noticed that we carry numbers 15 and 66. Can you tell my what these two numbers mean? Are bobbins universal (for various machines)? I know I have problem using the clear plastic ones on my Singer machine unless I kinda pound it down on the bobbin winder in order for it to spin the thread. Thank you. Wanda

66 class bobbins get their name from an old Singer machine that was made in 1920 through WWII. It was the first machine that allowed you to drop the bobbin in on the right side of the machine instead of putting it into a big metal casing.
The 15 class bobbin is the bobbin that was used when you use a metal casing that went into the side of the machine.
For most years, the 66 class bobbin was the standard bobbin that Singer used on all drop in machines. This has changed within the last two years, so some of the newer Singer models do use the larger 15 class bobbins (only in plastic).
The package of bobbins should give you the model number of most machines that it takes. Hope this helps.

Make sure that you have a new bobbin in the bobbin case, then, make sure that the machine is completely threaded, the presser foot is in the up position. Move the thread underneath the presser foot and twice around the thumb screw and hold on to the thread. You will then open up the slide plate that holds the bobbin and you will see a bullseye or engaging lever for the bobbin case. This may also be on the bed of the machine in the front to the right side on older versions of the 629. Make sure that you push it down until it clicks into position, then start the machine running. The thread will break away from the bobbin case, pull away the thread that you are holding in your hand, and wind the bobbin as much as you wish. When you are done, you will either have to push the slide plate forward to disengage the bobbin winder, or if on the bed of the machine, move it to the center so that it releases. Hope this helps.

Thread the machine as if you were going to sew, put the presser foot in the up position, take the tread underneath the foot and wrap it around the screw that holds the foot on, open the bobbin door/plate, insert a fresh bobbin, in the lower left hand corner of the bobbin area there is a button that looks like a club foot- press it to the left. Start the machine up, run the machine for about 4-5 seconds, stop the machne, unwrap the thread from the screw, pull the thread out of the machine, and continue to wind. The first white line on the bobbin is two yards of thread, and so on. When you have enough thread on the bobbin, shut the bobbin door/plate and check to make sure that the club foot button has been disengaged, if it has not then disengage it, then begin to sew. | Sewing On Oilcloth
I need advice! I have a Singer 2638 machine, and am trying to sew on oilcloth. It will not move through, it keeps sticking. I have tried several things to help it move, such as, soap on the needle plate, sewing thru tissue paper, and stitch witchery. Nothing is working. I have read to use a teflon needle plate and pressure foot. Well, according to Singer, none for my machine. Do you have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. You have a wonderful website, I have resolved several problems thanks to your knowledge.

I would try purchasing an even feed foot for your Singer machine. This will help pull the top and bottom layers evenly. If the material is sticking to the bottom plate and still will not feed, using tissue paper would be my answer. This material may be too much for your sewing machine and you may need to have it done on an industrial walking foot machine or buy yourself a portable upholstery machine. I hope this helps.

| Can You Clarify This?
I have a Rex 11-155W that I purchased in 1978. The machine has been very good for me. My question is, I would like to know what parts are compatible with this machine? The listing of parts for this machine is very limited. It usually comes down to them having inventory of bobbin cases and feet for this machine. A Japanese fellow once told me it is the same as a Nakajima 280L, can you confirm that? When repairing some of my Consews at work, the 206RB-1 seems to have parts that look a bit like it? I'd appreciate any history you may have, it is in perfect shape except for some of the wearable parts. I need to replace the thread take up spring, the bobbin tension spring and some thread guides.

It is very possible that your machine was produced by the Nakajima Co. The Nakajima Co. was sold to Juki Inc. and it could be that your machine is the same as the Juki LU562.
