Question500A Singer
I have a 500a that I recently found at a thrift store. I’m a 500a enthusiast (I own 2). This one is dirty and about what you’d expect for a 60 year old machine from a thrift store. Last night, I was oiling it. Then the hand wheel quit communicating with the needle. The motor is running. I’m thinking it’s something inside the wheel itself. Not sure if I’m brave enough to take the hand wheel off bc I’m afraid it won’t go back together (this is my luck when working on things). I don’t know what’s under there. Let me know what you think this could be.
Thank you!
Angie
9/22/2018
AnswerIf you take off the top you will see the inside there is a gear attach by a spring to the hand wheel.
This may be broken That is a direct drive machine so the motor in gauges at that point.

QuestionSinger CG 590
Hi Richard,

I'm hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction. I have a
Singer CG590 machine that's about 12 years old. I don't sew often, but I do
keep it oiled and tucked away in a protective box.

Thinking I know a lot more than I obviously do, I took it upon myself to
fix a timing issue and didn't do a half bad job! I was able to fix the
disconnect between the needle and bobbin. Bad news is now the machine isn't
running.

The machine has power and the arm isn't locked - I can turn the hand crank
freely, but when I press down on the foot pedal the machine doesn't even
recognize I've done anything. Absolutely nothing moves and I don't remember
hearing anything break or crack. The only thing I really messed with was
the bobbin case and the needle arm. I unscrewed the needle arm and I'm
wondering if I messed up the timing of the machine.

I would love any thoughts you might be able to share on this issue.
Primarily so I can better explain to the repair shop what I did!

Best!

Steph

hanks so much for the quick reply! Yes, I’m able to move the needle up and down by manually turning the hand wheel.

When I step on the pedal there doesn’t seem to be any power - nothing moves, but the light bulb is on so I know the machine has power.

Thanks so much for your advice! I’ve ordered a new controller, so hopefully it’s an easy change.

I really appreciate your help troubleshooting my overeager mistake!

Best!

Steph

AnswerCheck to see that the belt is connected between the hand wheel
and the pulley. Can you make the needle go up and down by turning the hand wheel?

The controller to the motor may be bad.
Check the wire to the controller

We could have supplied one for you
Very nice of you
Richard,

QuestionRepair CG-590
Hello, can you advise us?

My wife and I purchased a used CG-590. The machine was carelessly packed and the plastic thread guide is broken and bent.
The machine body seems fine. We are searching for the part online.
I am nervous about removing the broken Threader and replacing it .

Do we need to remove the top of the machine to install the new part?
If we remove the 3 or 4 screws to remove the top of the machine body will we make more problems for ourselves?

Hope you can give us some pointers.

Thank you

Richard & Neuza

AnswerYes I be-leave it is held in place with one screw
Take off top secew should be on other side of top

QuestionSinger 603
Hello,
Oil is leaking out of the take-up lever in this machine. If I raise the lever and then lower it…there is oil all over the shaft…which gets on my material.

Any idea on how to fix this? Someone who serviced the machine may have over-oiled? But how do I stop it from flowing?

Thank you,
Ann
>

AnswerTry taking off bottom an top of machine lay it on its back put paper towels inside the machine and
just let the oil soak in to the towels. You need very little oil for that machine.

QuestionGaskets for Pfaff 463
I took the face cover off my machine to clean it a bit as this machine was
given to me by a friend.
The manual says there are oil reservoirs (x and y in Fig 9) that have
foam-rubber-lined reservoirs.
The foam rubber in these has totally broken down and is basically dust
sitting in there.

I have searched about everywhere and cannot find any kind of part that can
be ordered to replace these.

My question for you is:

*Can I just cut any kind of foam rubber to insert into these reservoirs and
then oil them? *
Thank you!

Donna

12/31/2017
AnswerDear Donna
You will not find the gaskets. But it is not necessary.
The machine is a self oilier made for high speed operations.
The self oiling was made for heat not so much for lubrication.
When new the machine was made to run at 5000 SPM .
Put at its age now you would destroy it at that speed. No need to do any thing just
put it back together and don't full it completely with oil it will be fine.
If you try to but new foam rubber it will just leak all over the place.

QuestionKenmore clutch repair
My sewing machine is a 50 yr old Kenmore Model158-19461, Cannot fill a bobbin. When releasing clutch bobbin will not turn,. Can you help me?

12/23/2017
AnswerSure take out the screw on the silver wheel that you turn to release the clutch.
Hold the take up lever and unscrew the knob. When you have it apart take out the triangle part inside
and turned it around making sure that the metal tabs are facing out. Screw back in the knob and put the screw back in the knob when done. That should fix it

QuestionPfaff 2144
I have a Pfaff 2144 embroidery machine that I have had for 7-8 years now. The pulley on my machine has broken, and I cannot find a part to fix it. This machine is an expensive machine, and I would like to get it fixed versus pitching it and purchasing another expensive machine.

Can you help me? I believe the part I need is Pulley, Pfaff #9303911044000

Thank you for your help!

QuestionKenmore Repair
Hello, Richard.
I sure hope you can help. My husband has taken apart my sewing machine to figure out why the cam is not creating a zigzag stitch. He has determined that the metal arm that is supposed to rub on the cam is not touching it by about 1/16th of an inch. Is there an adjustment to move the arm closer.
Thank you,
Andrea S.

12/23/2017
AnswerThere is a adjustment to the arm.
But with out seeing it I can not help
You may have to take it to a local mecanic
Sorry

QuestionDressmaker Repair
Good morning, I hope you can help me on a old dressmaker sewing machine. the top thread keeps bracking at the needle, and it won't pick up the bottom thread.I hope i can fix it.this machine means a lot to me.Thank's for any help you can give.
Betty
9/23/2006
AnswerDear Betty,

Check the easy stuff first:
Make sure the needle is inserted in the machine properly- a good rule of thumb is the flat side of the needle should go to the opposite side of the last thread guide. Also make sure the machine is threaded correctly. If all checks out ok, e-mail me back.

QuestionReplacing the Hook & Horizontal Gear
replacing the hook and horizontal gear on a singer 625 doesn't look very hard, but I haven't figured out how to get the gear off the horz. shaft. the shaft rides in two stationary pillow block type bearings. Does loosening everything up allow enough clearance to remove the gear on the left side(the one that drives the bobbin)or am I missing something. Help will be greatly appreciated.
Jim
8/22/2006
AnswerDear Jim,

Loosen both gears on both ends of the shaft and pull the gear off to the right side until it releases the gear that you want to get to.

QuestionSinger Imperial 7000
I JUST PURCHASED A SINGER IMPERIAL 7000 ON EBAY, SO I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT'S HISTORY OR WHAT CAUSED IT'S PROBLEMS. IT RUNS FINE AS LONG AS THERE IS NO NEEDLE IN IT! IT HAS THE SELF WINDING DROP IN BOBBIN. I REMOVED THE NEEDLE PLATE AND BOBBIN CASING TO SEE WHAT MIGHT BE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. WHEN YOU TURN THE HAND WHEEL, AS THE NEEDLE DESCENDS, THERE IS A FLAT ROUND METAL PLATE THAT TURNS. THE NEEDLE GOES DOWN ABOUT 1/16th INCH TOO FAR, AND THE PLATE TURNS AND HITS THE NEEDLE, BREAKING IT. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO FIX THIS PROBLEM OR DOES IT NEED PROFESSIONAL REPAIR? I LOVE THE OLDER SINGER MACHINES AND REALLY WANT THIS ONE REPAIRED. I'M
NOT SURE IF IT HAS ANY OTHER PROBLEMS OR NOT. DO YOU REPAIR THIS TYPE OF MACHINE AND HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING IT TO YOU IF SO?

THANKS,
HELEN

QuestionIs It Worth Fixing??
I purchased a Singer mod. 646 at a yard sale for $45 a year ago but because of illness my wife just got to try it. the bobbin won't rewind and I found that there is a gear with missing teeth (black gear) that seems to be the problem. Is it worth fixing?
8/16/2006
AnswerThat is up to you. I have not seen the machine, so I am unable to determine if that is the only thing that needs to be replaced. In my opinion, I like the 600 series machine and it is worth repairing- assuming there is not too much more work needed.

QuestionNo Stitch Locking
Hi Dr.,
I need your help. I recently purchased a national serger modle n50 or n50e. I seem to have threaded it properly but there is no stitch locking happening. Have you had any experience with this? Please email me if you have any suggestions.

Thank you so much, Confused sewer- Korrin
8/16/2006
AnswerDear Confused sewer- Korrin,

I am not familiar with that machine, however if you're threading the machine properly and still no stitch is formed, it sounds to me as if your machine needs to be adjusted. You could ship it to me for $29.95 + the cost of shipping and parts if necessary. Let me know if you would be interested.

QuestionNeed Help with Tension
I've had a Sears Kenmore Machine model 385.12116 for about ten years and it has run well. I have used it only every once in a while. I had trouble with the needle thread breaking after a few stitches. I took it to a repair place that thought the timing was out, but on closer inspection changed their mind and said I was using the wrong size needle. Well there's alot
more to this story, but the bottom line is that I took the tension knob off and I am pretty sure I can put it back in, but there was a thin coil of wire with a zigzag end that fell out when I took the knob out. I don't know where it goes and the dealer has no schematic for this machine so cannot help me. Hope you can, I like my machine.

QuestionHow Do I...
My material caught in the feed and when I was removing it I heard a click. The bobbin would not feed. I remove the bobbin case holder and cleaned all the lint. All metal parts are turning, but the plastic bobbin holder is not
doing anything. There is a black spring on the right side that I do not know if it goes. Does it attach, go under or go against anything.

Please let me know how this spring works on this machine and should be placed.

Thank you

QuestionEasy Enough For Me to Fix?
I recently acquired a very nice Singer 2010 machine. It sews well, but I cannot get a bobbin to wind. The bobbin latch seems very loose, compared to my older Futura machine. Is this something that is probably affecting the fact that I cannot wind a bobbin? If so, will I need to take it in the be repaired or can am I missing something in the winding instructions?
Thanks.

QuestionSpring Fell Out of My Machine
Hello,

I am hoping that you can help me with my problem.
I was sewing on a project yesterday and a small

QuestionHow to Get the Housing Off??
Hi,

I have a Janome Model2039SN. I have had it a while but not used very much at all. My mom however could probablly sew blindfolded. lol. I am having a problem w/ my machine and I took it to my mom to look at. She cannot figure out how to get the housing on the left side of the machine open? Any machines we have seen in the past had simply open outward on a hinge. The instruction book is no help. It says that the "user should not dissasemble the machine beyond what it tells in the instructions in this
manual." The machine got stuck and the needle broke. I replaced it and have taken off the feed dog plate and took the bobbin case and case holder out and cleaned it. There is thread tangling around the bobbin case area. I have threaded, and rethreaded bottom and top of machine too.

1. How do we remove the housing?
2. Why might the thread be wrapping itself around the bobbin case?

Thanks,
Rhonda
8/4/2006
AnswerDear Rhonda,

I apologize, but I do not understand your question.

Thank you,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
The housing, the area that the shaft that hold's the needle, the area of the machine over the foot and feed dog. We cannot find any screw's or a way to remove that cover? Also, the other question....
What might make my machine wrap thread around and around the bobbin and bobbin case area ? and get all tangled up? Stopping the machine. I have checked the threading w/ the manual more than
once.

Thanks,
Rhonda.....

RE:
Dear Rhonda,

If you are positive that you are threading the machine correctly, either your tension needs to be tightened and adjusted on top or you need to remove the hook from the base of the machine and inspect it for scratches and such. If there is damage done to the hook, you need to sand the scratches out.

I would need a picture of the machine to be able to assist you on how to take the cover of the machine off, however, I do not think that there is anything inside the needle frame that will help solve your problem.

Thank you,

QuestionSinger 636 Problem-
I've been using my grandmother's Touch & Sew with no problems at all. Last night in the middle of a light project, it suddenly won't sew.
The needle (which is not bent and has been replaced just to make sure) is crashing against the bottom of the "disk" as it reaches the end of its stroke. I've removed the bobbin and bobbin case and can see there are open areas of the "disk" they rest in that are for the needle to pass through. Before the end of the needle stroke, the "disk" turns too far and the needle point hits a closed area.

I've read the manual cover to cover and can't figure out what to do....tried calling Singer, they were of no assistance.

Thanks in advance,
Stormy

8/4/2006
AnswerDear Stormy,

Take the base of the machine off and inpsect the four gears that are down there for damage and broken teeth. Take the top of the machine off and do the same with the two gears up there. If there are no broken gears, then your machine is out of time and you will have to call my tech help line to have me help you with the adjustments. Call first to make an appointment. 1-732-335-8902.

QuestionCan I Repair My Sewing Machine?
My beloved singer that was passed own to me finally gave in . I took th bottom cover off and do know that it is the hook gear and lower horizontal gear that got shattered. Is this something I could try and replace myself ? I really cannot afford the price quoted to me for a repair but hate to part with my machine for sentimental reasons. thanks .Brenda

QuestionMy Machine Just Quit!
I have an old Elna sewing machine from 1969, the top model at that time. It has served me well over the years doing lots of upholstery, sewing heavy quilts, drapery, many clothes (coats, suits etc.). Last week it just quit on me. My husband said the brushes in the motor were worn down. He took it apart and put new brushes in. Now the machine motor runs well, but for some reason the needle will not pick up the bobbin thread. Does this machine have to be timed. There is a belt that drives the needle and the bobbin case. We are very puzzled by this as the bobbin case was not disturbed when the machine was taken apart. What causes the needle to pick up the bobbin thread anyway? Would appreciate your answer on this. Thank you.

QuestionTiming a 99-31 Sewing Machine
I ordered a replacement but it appears to be a little different and the part # is different. It says Singer 540134 and will drop into machine.
A little hard to remove but fits. Have not ran machine, since needle hits, apparently the timing is off. How is this machine timed?

7/25/2006
AnswerSend me picture of the machine with the needle plate and presser foot off. I need to see down into the machine and from the bottom up at the same location and I should be able to give you detailed instructions on what adjustments to make.

QuestionTension Setting-
I recently purchased a singer 348 in the cabinet model, after trying unsuccessfully trying to thread it and get the tension correct, it seems the bobbin side does not work and the thread keeps breaking, have i got the tension set right - what should be the settings for stitch width, tension and stitch length for just regular sewing to repair my grandsons blanket. Please help
7/25/2006
AnswerIf it is not working, what is the machine doing? Try re-threading the machine again, check the needle to make sure that it is in correctly. There are no set numbers for tension- it is a feel, push, pull. If you could e-mail me back with a better description of what the machine is doing or not doing, I will try to help you as best that I could.

QuestionCan It Be Done?
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I have an old Kenmore that has the bobbin winder release button on the top. It will not stay depressed. I've been told it can't be fixed, but I suspect there might just be a way. Any thoughts?

Gp
7/21/2006
AnswerDear GP,

There is a way, however, it is too lengthy to describe in an e-mail or through technical help. It has to do with the clutch. You could send it to me for $29.95 + the cost of parts and shipping if you cannot find anyone in your area willing to do the job. Let me know if you would be interested.

QuestionNeedle Clamp Won't Stay On-
Hi. I hope you can help me. I have a Brother XL-5232. I know it is an inexpensive machine, but it is all I can really afford and would like to fix it (myself) if I can. I was sewing and my needle hit a straight pin I missed in my fabric and broke. It sort of jammed a little too and the needle clamp (w/thread guide) came off of the needle bar. Now I can't get the needle clamp to stay on the bar. It comes off every 10 minutes or so. The clamp won't stay on at all with the guide left off.
Thanks, Erin

P.S. I really appreciate your time and your site. I have learned bunches!

7/12/2006
AnswerDear Erin,

The only thing that I could suggest is to tighten the needle clamp. I do not see how hitting the needle could cause the needle clamp to come off. Let me know how it turns out.

QuestionReplacing a Gear
The 155819 gear on my Singer Stylist 457 just broke, and I am trying to figure out how easy that would be to replace myself. Your answer on 1/31/06 to "Pete", makes it seem very simple (removing the shaft and gear from the bottom of the machine) but your answer to "Hoping To Save Money" recommends having a professional do it, and makes it sound quite difficult (and recommends changing the gear from the top). Which is the better way to change the gear, and how simple is that?
thank you.

QuestionPutting It Back Together
I have a touch & sew model 758. The screw, Two hook shaped things and two very small oval shaped with whole in the middle objects fell off. I took it to a repair shop and the man told me all of the pieces came from my bobbin. Is there any way you can tell me how to put them back together or should I just buy a new bobbin? Thank you, Jodie.
7/12/2006
AnswerDear Jodie,

Hold the bobbin case upright, put the screw in the hole, holding the screw with your fingertip turn the bobbin case upside down. Insert the long metal piece with the hole in and the little oval thing with a hole in it is a nut. Screw it in. The tighter you screw it, the tighter the tension.

QuestionBobbin Winder
I recently received as a gift a universal sewing machine with no instruction booklet.
My problem is, I can't figure out the bobbin winder, attatched to the front of the machine next to the belt wheel. When I push if down to wind, the wheel of the winder doesn't turn altough it is making contact with the belt wheel. The only information that I can tell you is it is a Deluxe Zig Zag model KN2 made ing Japan, Pat No for US 523537.
7/10/2006
AnswerLubricate the bobbin winder. Find the small hole on the arm of the bobbin winder and put oil inside of it. Put some heat from a hair dryer on it and gently turn the spindle that the rubber ring is on until it frees up.

I recently bought an old Singer (247) at a garage sale for $3.00.

It actually works, and I am very pleased. The stitches, tension, etc. look good.

Problem: The timing (lug?) belt isn't gripping well . Or something. So that the motor revs and usually needs a hand start with the wheel-any suggestions? Tighten? Loosen? New belt? I have never had an exposed timing belt machine before.

Thank you,

Kathy
7/10/2006
AnswerDear Kathy,

Take the lids of the machine off and service all of the moving parts. That will free up the machine. You should start with the needle in the material- it will eliminate 90% of the drag.

QuestionWalking Foot Machine
My mini walking foot sewing machine will not pick the thread from the bobbin. Can you recommend a quick fix for this problem.
6/30/2006
AnswerCheck the basic things first... that the machine is threaded correctly, the bobbin case is inserted correctly, the needle is in properly...if all of those things check out ok, I would need to see a picture of the machine with the bobbin case and hook exposed and the needle in the up position to be able to help you. These types of machines very rarely go out of time.

QuestionStuck in Buttonhole Stitch
Hello,
I have a viking husquvarna(1975 model) that has been sitting for a few years. I started sewing the other day and find that the button hole
feature(knob on the lower right side) won't pull out, like you would do if you were going to do a button hole, yet it is locked in the button hole feature. Plus the line of stitching varies. (won't sew in a straight line) I oiled it liberally.

Thank you

Take the back of the machine off and heat the inside of the machine with a hair dryer.

QuestionMachine Frozen?
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
Hope that the pictures will help!
Many thanks, hope to hear from you soon again.
Mrs. P. Holden.
6/29/2006
AnswerLooking at your machine from the back, take the screw located on the left hand side of the machine out. Open the door on the right. Once the door is opened, inside there is a screw- remove the screw and take the plate out. Take a hair dryer and heat the inside on the machine at that point. This should unfreeze your machine.

QuestionNeedle Clamp Keeps Falling Off-

6/29/2006
AnswerDear Erin,

The only thing that I could suggest is to tighten the needle clamp. I do not see how hitting the needle could cause the needle clamp to come off. Let me know how it turns out.

QuestionWill Not Pick Up Thread
The needle on my Brother model# LS-2125 will not pick up the thread from the bobbin and bring it up through the hole under the needle to start sewing. If I thread the bobbin thread up through the hole by hand and try to sew, not a stitch will be made, just holes in the fabric. I've replaced the needle, checked the machine threading, cleaned the feed dogs and get the same results. Any suggestions?
6/29/2006
AnswerIf you have done all that you said in your e-mail and the problem still persists, it is time to take your machine in to a certified mechanic to have the machine re-timed.

QuestionChanging the Carbon Brushes on my Pfaff
I've taken out the motor though heaven only knows how I'm going to get it back in. I'm having a hard time figuring out what to do next. I got the impression that carbon brushes are screw capped in, but I can't see anything that looks like a likely target. Any help that you can provide would be great!

Thank you,
John
4/4/2006
AnswerDear John,

Take the square piece on the bottom of the motor (a snap piece), remove it, and remove the two screws located near the belt pulley on the motor. Split the motor in half and there are the carbon brushes.

Thank you,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
Thank you for the help. I've disassembled the motor, but either I'm looking at the wrong thing, or I don't really have any carbon brushes left. I'm not sure if that's possible.

I'm assuming that I'm looking for somthing that looks like this..

http://sewingandvac.com/itm.asp?partnumber=50431

Should there be two? There are two brass tabs on either side of the motor that have springs behind them. The one appears to be just a spring. The other looks it has the smaller part attached at the one end but none of the larger part.

Does any of this make sense or am I looking at the wrong thing? If they are the right parts and this is what is meant by worn carbon brushes, how do I put the new ones in? and I do I need to do any cleaning before inserting the new ones?

Thanks again for any help!

RE:
Dear John,

Yes, you are looking at the correct part. There are two carbon brushes. The carbon brush that has only a spring on it is worn down and needs to be replaced. To replace the carbon brushes, take the old ones out and put the new ones in with the carbon pushing against the comutater. If you have any questions, feel free to call me on my tech-help line 732-335-8902.

QuestionMaterial Jammed-
Hi..I own a Kenmore Model 385.16524000. It's in excellent condition and very clean. I changed a bobbin because I changed projects. Now, the machine will only sew a few stitches, get jammed, make a loud cranking nose and pull my material down into the feeder area. I have to cut everything out because the material is tightly caught along with a ball of thread in the bobbin area. I changed my bobbin over 20 times and have rethread the entire machine. I spent over two hours on this problem and can't figure it out. This has never happened before. Does my machine need repair or is it OE.

QuestionOnly Sewing Straight Stitches?
Hi:

Have a portable Kenmore model no. 17841. The stitch selector is on strike. Will only sew straight stitches. When the stitch selector is moved, the needle arm does not. I opened up the top of the machine. Looks like gears or something which I think are supposed to lock and unlock to free the needle arm are not working. Any suggestions? I've never had any problems with this machine. Not sure if it's cost effective to fix?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

QuestionViking Classica 105
I sewed a straight, small, seam, hit reverse to end it and then tried to sew another small seam and it began to sew backwards, ONLY. I cleaned out the dust under the feeder. I cannot really afford to take it anywhere for repairs as I am recently divorced and not much extra money. Any suggestions? Thank you.

QuestionReplacing Bobbin Winder Spring?!?
My mother has a Singer 500A sewing machine that lost the Bobbin winder spring # 172552. Now that I have a new one I'll be darned if I can see where it goes. Even with the exploded diagram I obtained I'm baffled. It looks like it goes under the wheel but how? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Don
4/4/2006
AnswerDear Don,

Take the bobbin winder out of the machine. Put the spring on the hole that the bobbin winder fits into. Now put the bobbin winder in, but don't tighten the screw- just turn it once or twice. Put the straight projection of the spring on the right side of the bobbin winder. Start to tighten the screw. Before you get the screw too tight, pull the downward projecting side of the spring over the housing of the machine so that it is pressing on the inside of the machine creating a push to the left. Center the circular part of the spring underneath the screw and the bobbin winder and tighten up.

QuestionThread From Machine Won't Catch
The thread from my my Singer sewing machine bobbin won't "catch" to begin sewing- it doesn't join the needle thread on the first turn. I have inserted it correctly. WHat can I do to try and repair it myself?

Take the bobbin case and needle plate off of the machine and turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is its lowest position. Take a picture of the needle and hook and send it to me.

Please do not sent the picture as an attachment. Please just copy and paste the picture onto the e-mail itself.

QuestionTension Adjustments
Hi,

I'd very much appreciate if you could give me instructions on how to time my Singer 221k sewing machine.

The problem is that it skips all stitches now. I looked at the instructions you gave for the singer 758 and figured that using the mark on the needle bar inside the case. I turned the crank towards me to the bottom and then continued until the mark lined up with the bottom of the needle bar holder. The needle is on it's way up at this
point. I then set the hook to be just in front of the needle. It still skips all stitches.

It's quite possible that the timing is fine, since before this the machine sewed fine, nalthough it's been slowly getting worse. Also how do you set the needle depth ?

Regards,

Dave
4/4/2006
AnswerDear Dave,

Those two machines are not comparable. E-mail me back with explicit information as to what you have done to the machine so that I can instruct you on how to undo it. More than likely, the original problem was that the needle was in the machine backwards. Those machines do not go out of time very often.

Although following the instructions for repair on a different model machine may seem logical, all machines are different.

QuestionReverse Lever Stuck Down
I have a Brother XR-65. I am new at sewing and only had this machine a couple of months. I was sewing a piece of broadcloth using a straight stitch - something popped and the machine started sewing in the SS mode - I can not turn the dial to change the stitch style and the reverse lever will not move.

Do I have a major problem? I bought this machine on clearance and the quotes I have received to look at it is almost as much as I paid for the machine.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

QuestionSignature 2000
I have a Signature 2000, Model 1958 (Montgomery Ward) and have lost the manual. I am trying to remember how to thread the bobbin. It threads on the top, but I don't know what to put all the dials on to get it to start threading. I tried loosening the middle wheel on the right side, but the needle still goes up and down. How do I release the clutch? I checked with Sewingandvac.com, but they do not have a manual for this machine. Can you help me?
Helen
3/8/2006
AnswerDear Helen,

If you loosen the wheel and the needle still goes up and down, you need to repair your clutch. But the easiest way to get around that is to just take the thread out of the needle and allow the needle bar to go up and down while you are winding the bobbin.

QuestionPutting the Bobbin Assembly Back Together
My 86 year old mother is in tears. The bobbin assembly has come out and we have been unsuccessful in putting it back in place. Can you please advise (or diagram if possible) how this fits together?

Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.
3/8/2006
AnswerIn the lower right hand corner of the bobbin case area, there is a small finger-like spring structure. Gently lift it and push it to the right. Take the bobbin case in hand and inspect it. It is a round piece of metal with a groove running down the edge of it. Now look at the hook, or the round piece of metal that is in the bobbin case area. It has a slight shelf-like structure. Place the bobbin case groove into the shelf-like structure in the hook so as to make it sit flush. With your finger, take the front of the bobbin case and push it to its left so that it is as far counterclockwise as possible and replace the spring. Hope this helps.

QuestionReplacing the Thread Holder
Looking for some help on how to put the thread holder back into the top back of the machine. This was my mother's and my wife wants to use the machine. The manual with it doesn't cover this. Machine appears to be in excellent condition and had a really nice wood desk that it sets in, but there is a piece that is separate that appears to belong in the back top the we can't see how to install. Thanks for any help you can provide.
3/7/2006

QuestionDoes This Sound Right?
You have a wonderful website!

I have been given a Singer Slant-O-Matic 401, built in 1958. Whenever I try to use the zig-zag, the needle breaks. I took it to get repaired and was told the the bushings were worn and the machine needed to be refurbished. His price is $250.00. Is there a new machine on the market today that is comparable to the capabilities of this home machine or would it be worth fixing?

Thank you very much.
3/7/2006
AnswerDear Glenda,

I personally think that $250.00 is too high. I could do the same job for you for $29.95 + the cost of shipping + the cost of parts if necessary. Let me know if you would be interested.

Unfortunately, sewing machines are not made like they used to- you're not going to find the quality of your 401 in any brand new machine today.

QuestionCan't Turn Off Stretch Stitch
I have a Kenmore machine 12493. I started sewing using the stretch stitch and now it won’t stop even when I return the dials to their normal“straight stitch” position. How do I get it to stop using the stretch stitch?
2/24/2006
AnswerOpen up the top of the machine and turn the dial that you turn for regular sewing and flexi sewing- the part at the end of it is stuck. You are going to have to oil it and heat it with a hair dryer until it frees itself. Don't force anything. Let it free itself up. You can gingerly help it, but DO NOT force it. Have a bit of patience and you will save yourself some money in the long run.

This is a common problem. If any function works, but just doesn't turn off/on or something is stuck in a certain pattern or mode, something is frozen and can be corrected by the performing the above.

QuestionFixing a Bradford Sewing Machine
My wife is fixing her Bradford sewing machine from the 1960s era. On the back of the machine it says Brother Model 7788 B-BRO-7788A Made in Japan.
It had been noisey and not working well. She found the lever that attaches to the Darn Silk Norm know had loosened up inside the machine.
She tightened that screw and it works well except that the Darn, Silk, Norm knob will not keep its setting,(it moves). She remembers a plastic washer that was worn out fell out from behind the knob. If she holds the knob on its proper setting the machine runs quiet. The original platic washer had a bevel on it to keep tension on the knob, I believe so the knob would not move. It was very thin. I thought the knob just had to be pulled out a little from the machine so I drilled a plastic washer that I had with a 9/32" inch drill to fit the knob shaft, and cut a piece off one side to allow the knob guide on the back of the knob to go into the guide slot. It helps some but the knob needs some presser on it to hold the setting.

Is their a replacement for this washer or some other way of fixing this?
2/21/2006
AnswerI would use a spongy material rather then the washer. Something that will create lift.

QuestionViking 6020 Stuck in Reverse
Dear industrial sewing machine man,

My mother recently gave me her Husqvarna 6020 sewing machine. We took it in over Christmas to be cleaned and fixed up so that I could start using it. It is in perfect working order, except that it won't come out of reverse. There is a button in the middle of one of the dials which sets the stitch length, and this button is supposed to control forwards / reverse stitching, but I cannot get this button to push in or out. It seems to be jammed. Is there any way that I can fix this that you know of?

Thanks in advance,
Stephanie
2/16/2006
AnswerDear Stephanie,

I strongly suggest that you take it back to the mechanic that serviced your machine and have him repair the problem. The stitch length is stuck in
reverse and he/she should have taken care of that before your machine left the shop. If he/she cannot do it, I would be happy to do it for you. Let me know how it turns out.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for getting back to me about the machine. Unfortunately, the
repair shop that we took it to was in Toronto, Ontario, and I brought it
back with me to Vancouver, BC after Christmas, so I can't take it back in to
the shop. I'd love to have you take a look at it, as you so kindly offered,
but I think shipping from BC to where you are would be very pricey, and
being a student, I don't think i could afford to send it to you. I'd also be
worried about how its treated by the mail system...

I've tried several methods of pulling the button out, but nothing seems to
work. I'm considering removing the shell of the machine and seeing if i can
find anything inside that might be keeping the button from coming back out.
Is there any other method you can think of?

Thank you so much in advance,
Stephanie

RE:
Dear Stephanie,

Take the back of the machine off and heat the stitch length control with a hair dryer for about 15-20 minutes and work the button in and out until it starts to move- be gentle, don't get impatient, it will work. Let me know how it turns out.

QuestionTaking the Cover off of a Brother XR-6T
Hello -- We have a Brother sewing machine, Model no XR-65t which we bought about a year and half ago and have used only a few times. Recently, my wife was sewing and pushed down the button to reverse. Now the machine will not go back to forward and the lever seems to be attached to nothing.

The machine is out of warranty and was somewhat inexpensive --- about $150. Since a minimum repair charge is $119 here, there is no reason to take it in. As I am somewhat handy, I would like to open the machine and see whether I can fix it. Trouble is, Brother has no repair manuals (and seems not to care at all) and I cannot figure out how to open the machine. All I need to know is how to open it up and I will take it from there. Can you help us?
Thanks, tom and teresa

QuestionCatch Release Knob Not Catching Balance Wheel?
Dear Sew Vac Doctor,

Thank you for your wonderful website, and taking precious time to answer each individual question so patiently. I can see the wealth of your experience through the different replies and answers.

I have some problem with my Brother sewing machine - model boutique 30.

Initally I had a problem with the pulley, but thanks though your previous help, I have rectified the problem - through your suggestion of gluing it.

However, I now encounter a new problem. The balance wheel (the one used to lower or raise the needle - I got the term from the instruction manual) would spin each time when powered, but the clutch release knob would stay stationary. As a result, the needle would not move. Just moments before that, the 2 wheels were joint rather tightly to each other and I had applied a little pressure to release them, but didn't feel that the pressure exerted was exceptional to have caused any damage. I have tried in vain to lock the 2 wheels together by spining them in opposite directions. I noticed a loose screw in the clutch release knob, which I have tightened, but it still didn't work. I am exasperated with the machine, and can't find any solution though taking apart the different covers.

Would appreciate your help! I am stuck in the midst of a sewing project.

Hope to see your response soon.

Thaking you in advance for your help,
Joyce

2/10/2006
AnswerDear Joyce,

Thank you!

Loosen the screw on the little silver wheel inside of the big wheel and remove the silver wheel. A small metal circle (ring) with bumps on it may fall out- these are the two pieces that I want you to have in your hand. If it doesn't fall out, take the metal circle with bumps on it out. Pay attention to my description of the metal ring, as it is very important for you to place it back on the shaft properly. The metal ring has three bumps on the outside of it and two indentations on the inside of it. The indentations on the inside are pointing outwards to one side. The outward side is the side that I want on the outside of the ring when you place it on the shaft. When it's sitting on the shaft, you need to visualize the three bumps on the outside while screwing the silver wheel into place. When the silver ring is tightened, the screw hole in the wheel has to be in between two of the bumps on the outside of the ring. When this is the case, put the screw in and tighten it and you should be good to go.

QuestionNeed Help Removing the Front Case....

QuestionUneven Thread on Top
I purchased a brother sewing machine in June. Everything fine until now. When I wind a bobbin the thread is uneven on the bobbin. More thread on top of bobbin than bottom of bobbin. I've been using this for 7 months now and no problem , whats going on with it?

AnswerI would need the model number to give you a precise answer, however, in most cases, the disc-like spring that is located on the top of the machine that you wrap the thread around before you go to the bobbin sometimes raises or lowers by vibration. The remedy for this is to locate the screw that holds the round spring-like disc and by trial and error, move it up and down until the bobbin winds evenly. If you do not want to do this, just guide the thread on with your finger- that is my easy way of doing it. It sounds simple, but it works.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
It is a Brother XR-65. When you talk about guiding the thread do you mean as I fill the bobbin? confused, Linda P.S thanks for the reply so fast

RE:
Dear Linda,

Knowing the model number, that is your problem. Just guide the thread onto the bobbin while it's winding with your fingers.

QuestionViking 500 Handhweel Stuck
Hi, my mother has a Viking 500. The handwheel will not turn so the needle will not move. When I look at the bobbin holder it looks like it is not in correctly and the plastic plate covering the bobbin will not sit down completely. The bobbin holder appears to be rotated 90 degrees(ccw),could this be? If so, how do I get the holder out? Is this something I can do or should I bring it in and have it done?Thank you,Stan

AnswerDear Stan,

Just squeeze the two little wings on the bobbin case and take it out.

QuestionAbout How Much-
Hello,

I wrote you yesterday about my Husky Viking 6020 which doesn't function properly (I live in France and want to eventually being you my machine when I visit my parents in NJ in April).

In fact, I have two problems:

The needle piston is stuck to the right and no longer moves back and forth when I turn the knob to adjust the zig zag function AND the small reverse button has cracked off.

So, I would like to know if you think you could fix both problems and could you please give me an estimate of how much it would cost including labor? Like I said in my previous e-mail, I don't want to haul my machine all the way back to the US if I don't have to.

Thanks for a quick response,

Mary
2/2/2006
AnswerDear Mary,

I could fix your machine. Your looking at somewhere around $100.00.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
Hello again,

The small piece that broke off is not the reverse piece but the smaller button located under the knobs that, if I remember correctly, serves for
making button holes.

Also, what do you think is wrong with the machine? The repair person here "fixed" it once, just making some small adjustments and oiling it,
but as soon as I popped it over to zig zag (maybe the third time after this adjustment), it got stuck again. The repair shop said it was a gear problem and that they couldn't get the part: that the machine was too old. I think they were just being lazy....

Because I love this machine, I'm willing to break my back carrying it to the US with 3 kids in tow, too. So, how many days will you need to repair the machine? I arrive in the US on the 17th of April and leave on the 29th. Will you be there during that time?

Thanks for your time in responding to my questions,

Mary

RE:
Dear Mary,

I will be here during that time and I could repair your machine in that time frame.

QuestionDropped Kenmore Machine in Mud!
My wife dropped her sewing machine accidentally into some driveway mud. The machine did not hit the ground hard but was extremely muddy. She
cleaned the machine inside and out, now the machine is so tight, when pressing on the foot petal the machine motor will run but the machine
is tight. You can hand turn the knob but again, it is very tight. We have placed in oil in all areas and it is extremely tight. Any recommendations.

AnswerDear Spouse of a Quilter Who is Stressed,

I am going to tell you something that is unconventional here- open up the door on the needle side. Look in and you will see the center of the shaft that runs through the machine. Take a blunt metal instrument, press it against the center of the shaft, and give it a whack with a hammer. DON'T hit it hard enough to shatter the machine, just hard enough to jostile it. This should take care of your problem. Let me know how everything turns out.

QuestionWhere Can I Take My Machine?

I plan to take a beginners sewing class so my friend is giving me a 30 year old Singer machine. She said it may need a tune-up because she hasn't used it in a long time. Where would I take it?

Thanks

QuestionBobbin Case Stuck in Shuttle
I was having problems with my Kenmore 385.1278180 and I decided to clean the shuttle case. When I tried to move the needle up to the heist position it wouldn't go. So I ended up unscrewing the needle. Then when I opened up the shuttle area the bobbin ended up being stuck in the shuttle itself. How can I get the bobbin case out of there to reassemble the machine?

Thanks,
Martha
1/31/2006
AnswerDear Martha,

In the shuttle area there is a silver round piece- called the shuttle race cover. It has a black ear on the right and a black ear on the left. Push the right ear to the right, and the left ear to the left and the silver ring should come out. Behind the silver ring is the bobbin case stuck in the hook. Remove that, jiggle it, move it, just work the bobbin case out of the hook. Now put the hook back in the machine. In the machine there is a driver that looks like a half moon. Your hook looks like a half moon- make a full circle out of both of them. Re-install the race cover, pushing the left ear to the right and the right ear to the left to secure the race cover, and your problem should be solved.

QuestionReplacing the Gear in a Singer 457
Hi Doc:

I am trying to help my friend fix his sewing machine. It seem's that I need to replace part # 155819 Gear and Shaft. Is this a Big deal? , do I have to remove all the Gut's on top? to pull the shaft/ gear from the top?.

I am a Forklift Mechanic by trade and pretty handy at this stuff.

Any Trade Secrets to replace the gear ?

Any Help would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Pete

AnswerDear Pete,

Pull the shaft out from the bottom. First release the screw on the top horizontal gear, and then pull the shaft down from the base of the machine. Pull the gear out, put the new gear in, and reverse the above process. Good Luck!

QuestionViking 6020 Handwheel Trouble
Hello,
I have a Viking 6020, and can't get the handwheel off so I can take off the cover on the right side of the machine. Is it supposed to just pull off? I don't see any screws.

Thanks for any help you can give me!
Brian
AnswerDear Brian,

The wheel just pulls off, however, its probably been on there so long that it could be stuck beyond anyone's ability to get it off without breaking it. Since those handwheels are no longer available, knowing that it could very well break, I strongly suggest not taking it off unless there is a VERY good reason for doing so.

QuestionNeedle Gets Stuck in the Down Position

Hello,
I bought a new gently used Janome L-344 series sewing machine and I was able to get three small projects out of it before it started acting up on me. The needle gets stuck in the down position, however when I go to loosen the arms holding the bobbin case in, the entire bobbin holder assembly falls out. I'm a novice sewer, so this is beyond me. The machine won't do more than a few stitches now before it gets stuck and i have to go through this whole untangling / rebuilding process. I need some advice here.

QuestionWhere Does This Part Go????
I have a Viking Husqvarna 19e that dates to about 1965. It has a push button reverse mechanism in the middle of the stitch length dial. To put the machine in reverse you just push the button in and it catches and stays. To take it out of reverse, you push in and up a bit to release the catch. I haven't been using it much lately, but when I do it's been very difficult to get the catch to release to take the machine out of reverse. Today it wouldn't come out of reverse at all.

I read through your FAQ and tried the hair dryer trick and everything seems to have loosened up quite a bit. I'm guessing this was the main problem.

But before I found your site, I took the back plate off to have a look and there was a loose part that dislodged when I moved it with my finger. It's silver colored metal, flat and u-shaped. The part itself doesn't appear to be broken. Either what was attaching it is broken, or it I simply dislodged it. I think this might have been the catch itself. But the machine also now seems to be stuck in low gear (I've checked the push-pull button on the bobbin winder already).

What is this part and how do I put it back?

Thanks.
AnswerSend me a picture of the part.

QuestionMy Machine Started Slipping-
My machine started "slipping", so I had it serviced. It was cleaned, but nothing wrong was found. The motor ran, but the needle didn't move. I replaced both belts, but it still doesn't sound right. The stitches are uneven, no matter how the tension is adjusted. I'm wondering if the problem is with the $2.00 washer piece behind the wheel. Shouldn't the service man have detected it? QuestionJanome Stitch Length Not Changing
I have a Janome Harmony that I bought in Mexico. I took it out yesterday and sewed a bit on a scrap of fabric. The stiches looked fine, but when I changed the stitch length, I didn't see a change. I turned the adjustment knob all the way through it's range and it felt stiff at one end (shortest stitch length, I believe), but it did turn. When I sewed another strip, the feed dogs are moving up and down, but are only moving forward a fraction of an inch. Everything else seems to be fine, although reversing the machine also doesn't seem to have any effect (the reverse button doesn't feel like it's engaging anything).

Finally, when I set the stitch length adjustment to stretch stitch, the machine gets jammed. I can hand turn it for a bit, but then I feel it tighten up and I can't turn the handwheel any further. If I start to move it away from the stretch stitch setting, it will run but makes a clicking noise which seems to be coming from the back of the knob you use to choose which stitch you want, but not sure. As soon as it's off the stretch stitch, it runs fine again (except, of course that the feed dogs still aren't advancing).

Also, if the handwheel is adjusted to a certain point before I go to stretch stitch, I can't put the length adjustment knob in that position (which corresponds to the point at which the machine jams if I start out in stretch stitch. I can adjust the handwheel forward or back and then I can turn the stitch length adjustment.

The machine is already opened up, but I can't tell what's wrong. Any suggestions.
-John
AnswerDear John,

The reverese and length is frozen. Spray the stitch length area with WD40 and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then use a hair dryer on low heat- once the metal starts to get warm, start working the stitch length until it frees up- don't be impatient, it will eventually free up and don't be too aggressive because you do not want to break any parts in there. Gently work it back and forth.

QuestionShould Needle Move While Winding Bobbin?
Dear industrial sewing machine man,

Concerning this Beautiful Kenmore 148 13100.

When I turn the knob to disengage the needle to wind a bobbin. The
needle still goes up and down.

Surely this isn't the nature of the machine since it does have the
dis-engage feature.

What should I do to stop the needle from going up and down? Did I miss
an oil point?

Thanks bunches for your site.

WOW, you are a tremendous help for some mightly terrible problems……..

Sincerely
BZZZ
AnswerYou have to disassemble the little silver wheel off that is inside the handwheel. Then there is a washer there with three bumps on it on the outside and two bumps on the inside. Take note to how you are taking this off because you want to be sure and put it back on the same way. Once this process is done, pull on the bigger wheel on the right- it should slide on the shaft- since it is frozen you might have some difficulty moving it. Apply oil in bewteen the big wheel and the shaft and work it in until the handwheel moves freely and the shaft stops. A hair dryer may help. Once this is done, just reassemble and the problem will be solved.

Question6230 Loose Loop Problems

QuestionSchematic for Singer 500A Tension Assembly
Hi,

My Singer Slant-o-matic 500A stopped sewing correctly and I realized the upper tension was extremely slack. So, I took the tension assembly apart. I think I figured out how to put it back together correctly, but I was wondering if you have a schematic so I can make sure it's all in there right. Also, if you lose tension in this area, what is the usual problem? I know there are 2 different springs. It seems like the front part of the assembly (with the knob) isn't pushing against the back part of the assembly (with the disks) at all. Could it be the check spring? Isn't that the spring in the rear of the assembly?

Thanks,
Yvette
AnswerDear Yvette,

The order in which the tension assembly goes back on is : a sandwich of three disks, closest to the machine with the rounded metal piece which has a finger on it to the front being wrapped by the check spring (large barrel side to the machine). Then comes the +/- cup, followed by the honeycome-shaped spring, then the round metal washer-like piece (finger pointing up), silver cylinder screwed onto the tension stud. At this point, you adjust your tensions and when you have the proper tension on your machine, the number wheel then goes on and then the lock nut.

QuestionProblems with My Brother VX1100
hi,
i am currently having problems with my sewing machine. i cleaned it and started to sew again and my whell has gotten stuck with the needle down in the shuttle. i cannot get the wheel to come back up. the needle is not hitting anything however i cannot get the shuttle or anything out because the needle is in the way. do you know what to do?
thanks,
arn
AnswerIt sounds to me as if you have jammed the bobbin case area. Look down at the bobbin case area, take the bobbin case out. There is a round metal piece that surrounds the bobbin case. Push the left ear to the left, the right ear to the right and this will allow you to take the ring out. Look for caught threads inside, remove them. Re-assemble. Your problem should be solved.

QuestionUpper Thread Getting Jammed
Hi, I made the mistake of purchasing a Euro-Pro Stitch Art machine in 2000. Model Number is 7535. I know, I know information from Euro-Pro is just about non-existent. For your information I went to their web site: www.euro-pro.com. Under Sewing, they do have some manuals and parts available for SOME of their sewing machines. (#393 ETC). I was amused that they had a machine listed for sale for $323.00 and had the nerve to put in the description Retail Value $160.00. However, they didn't even recognize my model number which is 7535.

Anyway I found your web site. After many many hours of trying to solve my own sewing machine nightmare, I read some of your answers which helped (at least now I understand the operation of the machine better) Trouble is, I had it actually working for about a day. Now I am back to square one. My problem is the upper thread keeps getting jammed in the bobbin mechanism causing the machine to jam. I have tried everything from trying new bobbins, to cleaning the entire bobbin mechanism, and removing the plate to clean below it. I am starting to wonder if my thread tension on top is the culprit. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you for your website:) I am sure it helps many many frustrated sewers out there. I may take up crocheting for awhile!!! :) Regards Diane + Keith
AnswerDear Diane,

It is very common in those machines for the thread to jump out of the tension disks, causing no tenion on the upper thread which would cause you to have big loops and jamming on the bottom of the material. My only suggestion for this, is after you carefully re-thread the top of the machine, just run a little bit slower and it will eliminate some of the jumping of the thread.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

QuestionClicking Noise
Dear industrial sewing machine man,
I am a learning how to sew and while working on a project, my sewing machine starts to make this loud clicking noise just about the time that my thread comes out of the needle. It sounds like the same problem that many people have according to the comments that are posted on your website. I read that the timing could be out. What do you mean by that and do you think that is the case with me?
Thank you.
Candi
AnswerDear Candi,

If the machine is sewing, it more than likely is not out of time. It sounds to me as if you are threading the machine incorrectly. Check your manual and re-thread the machine according to the instructions in the manual.

QuestionHow Do I Line the Needle Up Correctly?
I recently inherited an old Singer 404. I've been cleaning it up, replacing parts, oiling & greasing, etc. But I can't figure out how to adjust the needle lineup. The needle definitely isn't centered on the hole in the throat plate. It's too close to the front of the hole, near the user. That's causing the thread to break frequently (slices the thread). Even when the thread stays in tact it often misses stitches because the needle thread doesn't get caught by the shuttle making laps around the bobbin.

It doesn't look like the bobbin case positioning can be adjusted to improve alignment. The throat plate hold-down posts have no room for realigning. I don't think the needle drive rod can be realigned, either. And it looks like the top of the machine, although bolted onto the base, certainly has some locating pins which don't have room for adjustment either.

So how do I get the 1/16th inch or so of movement I need to line the needle up correctly? I KNOW the design engineers have a plan to do this, (this machine is built like a German car--they thought of everything) but I can't find any service manuals to show me how to do it correctly.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Shane
AnswerDear Shane,

If you take the top off and take the side door off, on the top upper left hand side of the machine there is a screw that is facing you and looks as if it is painted into the machine. Loosen that screw a half of a turn (even though you will crack the paint) and on the very top just behind that screw is another screw. That is your adjustment for the needle bar. Play with it, see what it does and see if you have success. If not, please respond.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
Mr. Williams,

I've taken the top and door off, but I don't see any screw like the one you
describe. If I understand you correctly, the (painted) keeper screw's axis
is horizontal and it's head is pointed toward me as I sit at the machine
(like I'm operating it). Then the adjusting screw should have a vertical
axis, with its top pointed up. I don't see anything like that.

The pushrod driving the needle rides in a nearly-vertical bushing, which is
held in the cast housing by a horizontal screw (head to the left), but it
doesn't look like there's any room to adjust that bushing's alignment. That
screw just keeps it from sliding out. On the top end of that driving piston
is the normal (I suppose) set of cams to drive the piston up and down while
whipping the thread leader (which sticks out of the front of the machine,
toward the user) up and down. Doesn't look to me like there's any
adjustment there, either.

I know there's a way to adjust this thing. I just can't find it. As it is,
my needle goes thru the hole in the throat plate without scraping metal, but
just barely. It's so close that it frequently shears the thread off. So I
know it needs adjusting. If not for the locating pins, I'd say the top part
of the housing could rotate a bit on its base, but that seems like a pretty
coarse way to make such a minute adjustment. There must be another way.

Any other ideas? Or is the screw you talked about really there, but I just
missed it?

Thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,

Shane

RE:
Dear Shane,

The adjustment screw is on top, but I failed to tell you that the presser foot thumb screw is going right through it. If you look at the ring that the presser foot thumb screw is inserted into, you will see two notches which will accept a screw driver so that you can adjust that screw.

QuestionStop Motion Knob on My Janome 344
Hi,

I have a new Janome 344. There is a stop motion knob in the center of the balance wheel. When filling a bobbin, I'm supposed to turn the stop motion knob counterclockwise to stop the needle from going up and down as the bobbin winds. Trouble is, the stop motion knob doesn't want to move at all. I even put on rubber gloves to hold the balance wheel in place and try to twist the stop motion knob in the proper direction, and it wouldn't budge.

Is something too tight? I tried oiling the inside general area of the balance wheel with no luck. Also, if I just forget about this being a problem, is it bad to just let the needle run up and down whenever I fill bobbins? Thanks.

-Karen
AnswerDear Karen,

You are correct in trying to get the piece free- you just have to be more forceful with it. If in fact you cannot get it to come free, as long as you take the thread out of the machine (bobbin and needle) you can run the machine with the needle running up and down.

QuestionMachine Totally Locked Up!
My machine was going along just great then it locked up..how do I unlock it?..the screen on it says bent or broken needle..so I replaced and the take up knob on the side wont turn ..it is almost as if it locked totally up???
Thanks
Nina
AnswerDear Nina,

Without getting into a technical break-down, most machines jamb in the bobbin case area which is where I'll tell you to take the bobbin case out, the needle plate off, bobbin case out, and inspect for loose threads that might be causing the machine to freeze up. If this does not work, the other possibilites are impractical for an end user to attempt, in which case you would have to take it to a qualified mechanic.

QuestionWhat's Going On Here?
I have a Kenmore sewing machine. It was working fine one evening, then suddenly the next day when I rethreaded it the claw-like hook on the shuttle stopped catching the top thread. I've experimented with different needles and tensions and change. If I remove the bobbin and lower the needle it will catch if I turn it manually, but I can't leave it like that because the needle hits the bobbin. If I push the thread down so there is a larger loop it catches so I can pull the bobbin thread up, but it won't stitch. The shuttle just keeps missing the top thread. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
Bob
AnswerDear Bob,

Remove your bobbin case and on either side of where the bobbin case was, there are two ears on either side of the silver ring that surrounded the bobbin case. Push the left one to the left and the right one to the right and the silver ring will pop out. The apparatus that is left in the machine is a half moon shuttle that is next to a half moon driver that is situated in a u-shaped metal piece. Inspect the hook so that you know where the tip of the hook is and leave it in the machine while you turn the handwheel towards you to put the needle in the lowest postion. At this point, the tip of the hook should be flush with the top of the left side of the u-shaped metal piece. If it is not, your machine is out of time. I would need to see a picture of the base of the machine so that I can locate the adjustment screws for you. Hope this helps.

QuestionPosition of Bobbin Holder
yes i replaced the hook gears and now sounds little funny also bend needle. could i have gotting it out of time? If so where does the needle position and other go. any info would be great. thank you for your time. charles
AnswerDear Charles,

I apologize, but I do not have your first e-mail so that I can reference back to see what it is we are talking about here. What was your original problem that you were having with the machine?

I was ready to tear my hair out and take the machine into a repair shop when I found your site and found my problem (A Sears machine which wouldn't change the stitch length). I throught this is wild, but worth a try and took the hair dryer to it. Wow! It worked and I can now change the stitch length. I have attempted to clean and oil the part, so that it shouldn't stick again. Thank you so much.

QuestionTiming a Singer 758
All the gears are okay and so is the belt. i did have a gear replaced in my former city by a repairman about 1 yr. ago. when you take out the bobbin case and see the round base that goes around when you step on the foot feed, that is where the needle is hitting on. the bobbin will not spin even though the other part does. now what do we do?

thank you,
terry
AnswerDear Terry,

Insert a new needle in your machine. Remove the bobbin and bobbin case. Before I start this process you have to inspect certain parts on your machine. First of all, turn the handwheel towards you until the needle is in the lowest position and observe two lines on the needle bar at the place where it comes out of the machine. You have to see these lines. When you find those, you have to tilt the machine on its back and you will see that on the right hand side there is a belt coming down onto a gear like piece on the timing shaft. Move your eyes to the left and the next thing that you will see is a large round gear on the feed shaft. Now that we have determined the difference between the feed shaft and the timing shaft, follow the feed shaft to the left and there will be a small metal piece there with two metal screws on it. Next to that to the left is a stationary metal peice that has a bump on it. You must see these two things to adjust your machine.

Now, to determine if your machine is out of time, turn the handwheel towards you (always turn it towards you) until the needle is in the lowest postion again. Observe the two lines on the needle bar, turn the handwheel toward you until the bottom line goes in the exact place where the top line was. Now look at the needle and hook. The hook should be directly behind the needle. If it is not, we go back to the bottom of the machine on the gear like metal piece that the belt rides on and loosen the two screws that are in the piece. Now if you will remember, this is on the timing shaft. When these two screws are loose, the hook will become moveable. Place the tip of the hook directly behind the needle without moving the needle bar (remember that the needle bars bottom line was placed where the top line was). When you have accomplished this, tighten the screws on the belt gear.

Now you have to determine whether the feed is in time. Again, place the needle in the lowest postion, rise the low line to where the top line was, and see if the line on the feed shaft is directly next to the bump on the stationary metal piece. If not, without moving the handwheel at all (because it must stay in this position to time it), loosen the two screws on the feed shaft piece and align the two lines together. Then tighten the two screws, make a few rotations with the handwheel, and again, put the needle in its lowest position and rise the bottom line to where the top line was. Inspect the two lines on the feed shaft and the hook behind the needle.

If these did not stay in adjustment, re-do the entire process, but be more careful not to move the handwheel when making the tightening adjustment. If you re-do this and it still does not stay in adjustment, you need to replace your timing belt, which is not something that I suggest that you attempt. I would be more than happy to do that for you if need be.
You could send your machine to me and I would replace the timing belt for $29.95 + the price of the belt, + the cost of shipping your machine.

This may sound confusing at first, but if you follow my instructions step by step after you have familiarized yourself with the timing lines, it is not. Hoping for your success!

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
thank you very much for your help, it needs a new timing belt as you listed in your instructions. i will get back with you on repair, but have a question, do you sell a machine that is like this?

QuestionNecchi Needle Drive Will Not Disengage
Dear industrial sewing machine man, I have a new Necchi 4795, and after the first three or four successful bobbin windings, the needle drive will not disengage when I am winding bobbins. What can I do?
Thank you,

AnswerDear Debra,

Loosen the small wheel inside the handle. Support the needle bar with a spool of thread and force the outer wheel to turn by itself. Then, put a little bit of oil behind the small silver wheel and that should solve your problem.

QuestionBobbin Case Out of Alignment
I have a Singer 626 Touch and Sew machine with the bobbin case out of alignment. The case will go back into the grove, but the black spring mechanism on the right side won't snap into place. It will go into place but not tightly or securely and won't stay in place when sewing or winding the button. There is no sewing machine repair in my neck of the wood and I was wondering if you could advise me on this problem? Thank you. Judi
AnswerDear Judi,

I would be happy to help.

Remove the black piece and re-insert it by putting it in on an angle, scraping it on the base of the machine as you push in. It will then pick up a spring that you cannot see, and that will solve your problem. If you have any other questions, or concerns, let me know.

QuestionCan You Help Me Repair My Machine on My Own??
Dear industrial sewing machine man,

I have a singer Model 758. Recently, the feed system gears have worn out and need to be replaced. I took it to the sewing guy and he gave me the gears and was going to repair it but I decided I wanted to try on my own. He voiced some skepticism on my ability to get the timing right. While I’m sure I can replace all the gears and reassemble the machine, I do believe that fixing the timing is not something that can be done by a layman.

However, I have worked on cars, grew up on a farm etc all my life and am very mechanically minded being able to repair just about any machine that I turn my hand to. I’ve even repaired some of the gears in a few of my watches! So I am comfortable working with small parts as well.

Do you have, or can you point me in the direction of a do-it-yourself resource for getting the timing right. I’ve read the postings on your website and know you have told others that this is something that they should have a technician do, but I enjoy learning new things and doing it myself no matter how many times I have to try.

Please help me as no one in the sewing machine repair business I have talked to seems to think I have any business working on my own machine.

Thank you for your time. Sorry for the long e-mail, but felt it explained my plight. If you have any questions or answers please feel free to e-mail or call me at your leisure.

Lucas
AnswerDear Lucas,

I'll be glad to help you fix your own machine, however, there is no printed material on how to do so. If you could call my tech help line at 732-335-8902, I will walk you through the timing process.

Make sure that you have installed all of the gears and have the machine put back when you call.

QuestionHow Do I Drop the Feed Dogs??
Never been totally pleased with this thing, but lately it has been a real pain.....My threads are breaking after wadding up in front of needle hole, the bobbin is knocking, and it is slipping stitches..Is this a tension problem? If so....where do I start? Also...how do I drop the feed dogs

Thank you

Michelle
AnswerDear Michelle,

Your machine has no feed drop. In the box of attachments you had a feed cover plate which takes the place of the feed drop. The symptoms that you are giving suggest that your bobbin case may have chips or burrs on it. Inspect the bobbin case and let me know what you find out.

QuestionKnives on Serger Not Aligned Correctly
I recently ran over something I wasn't supposed to while serging and

pushing directly on the top edge of the bottom knife, which keeps making
the bottom knife unlevel with the needle plate. Is there any way to
adjust the position of the top knife? I can't seem to unscrew it (what
looks like the screw to hold it in is impossible to unscrew, so maybe
the top knife doesn't come off? Do you have any suggestions on what

QuestionBobbin Winder Will Not Turn
If you can help me? I have a 714 singer sewing machine. The bobbin winder will not turn you can hear the machine run but the spindel will not turn. Do I need to purchase a wheel has it wore down. When I first got this machine I purchased the little black wheel, but that hasn't been too long. It was a used machine when I got it.
AnswerTurn the bobbin winder with your fingers and note how free it is. It's more than likely frozen. You will have to oil the bobbin winder, however, no matter how careful you are when oiling it, oil is going to get on the black rubber ring- which is not good. My suggestion is to take the lid of the machine off, remove the bobbin winder, take the bobbin winder ring off (the black ring), heat the bobbin winder assembly with a hair dryer for 10-15 minutes. That will enable the bobbin winder to move somewhat. When you see it is moving, oil the shaft, work it in until it moves freely (I usually use an electric drill to turn it by putting the spindle in the chuck). DO NOT use the electric drill until the spindle is moving or you will snap it in half. When this process is complete, put the rubber ring back on, making sure that all extra oil has been wiped clean. Re-install the bobbin winder assembly and this should solve your problem.

QuestionReplacing Blades-
I have had a BL4-428 for 17 years and very few problems. I jammed it sewing on apparently too many layers of fabric. Now the feed dogs aren't drawing the fabric. When it does draw the blades won't cut the fabric( the fabric bunches behind the blade. Is there anything I can do at home to get the machine to run? Is this machine worth repairing?
Thank you in advance for you help
AnswerYou need to change the blades on your machine. The upper knife part # is 428910101B ($7.95) and the lower knife part # is 408910201A ($7.95). Both of these parts are available on www.sewingandvac.com I would also suggest taking the needle plate off and cleaning in between the feed dogs. Check for scratches and or burrs on the needle plate, feed dogs, and presser foot.

QuestionSinger 603- Bobbin Will Not Wind
I recently picked up a Singer 603. The bobbin driver was frozen in the up position making it impossible to remove the reel holder. I obtained the service manual and removed the whole assembly. I was able to get the driver loose and oiled. I reinstalled everything according to the manual, timed the machine and oiled and lubed all the appropriate parts.

My problem is that the bobbin will not wind. The timing appears to be correct according to the manual and everything appears to be working correctly otherwise. When attempting to wind the bobbin, the thread is caught by the hook and brought around, but just comes over the top of the bobbin, never winding around it. I am not sure that the driver is being pushed up far enough when the button is in the winding position, although I measured it according to the manual and all the distances between parts appear to be correct. The lint wiper is missing but I am not sure that it would cause this problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Juli
AnswerDear Juli,

Unfortunately, service manuals are not to be used as a Bible. Especially on machines that are 20-30 years old, the tolerences cannot be trusted. You are going to need to play with the bobbin winder lifter- it sounds to me as if it needs to go a little bit higher. Rule of thumb is raise the bobbin lifter high enough to make the bobbin itself turn when the bobbin winder is in it's on position and make sure that the bobbin doesn't turn when it is in the off position.

QuestionBobbin Winder
I have a Singer Model 4562. When I try to put thread on the Bobbin - the bobbin the spindle is not turning/rotating in circular motion. I have tried following the manual to make sure I am threading correctly . Push indent, thread is on spool pin, lead thread from spool and snap into thread guide post, wind thread clockwise around from of bobbin winder tension disc, pass thread end, from inside, through small hole in rim of bobbin, place bobbin on spindle and push it to the right. It makes the noise as if it is working but it is not moving. It could be a little of a forcing sound. What parts should I check to see if they are broken, and that may need replacement.

Thanks

Liz
AnswerDear Liz,

Move the bobbin spindle back to the left and try to spin it with your fingers It is probably very tight and you will have to oil the spindle. But BE CAREFUL not to use too much oil. You will probably need to replace the bobbin winder ring. I have them available at www.sewingandvac.com part number 15287A and they cost $1.25 each.

QuestionKenmore Going in Reverse!
I am very happy sewing with my older machine (Kenmore 158.904) since I bought the foot control from your company. Thank you again.

I have another problem. A young couple gave me the sewing machine above. It was probably their parents as it looks old. It works great but ONLY IN REVERSE. It has the automatic reverse pattern discs. There is a Reverse Stitch push button that does nothing whether pushed in or left in the out
position. I think it is for bar tacking?

Do I have a big problem and one too costly to repair? If it is an easy fix, please tell me the price of part needed.

Thank you for your help.
Anita
AnswerDear Anita,

I don't think that it needs a part. It sounds to me as if it needs the old hair dryer and oil trick. Take the lid of the machine off and point a hair dryer into it while gently working the reverse button and the stitch length knob until it frees up. Then service that area with oil and oil the rest of your machine and that should do the trick.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:
The machine has been cleaned and lubricated. The controls all work freely. The reverse control button is ineffective. Can see parts move inside but nothing happens. Feed dogs only operate in reverse, ie. feed material toward the operator instead of away from operator. Otherwise it seems to run quite well but is useless without the material feeding away from the operator. Can you suggest any further help?

Anita

QuestionHelp Me Put It Back Together
Dear industrial sewing machine man: I sure hope you can help me. As it seems nobody else can. I have searched web pages, autions, forums and groups. I even read all of your questions and answers on your page. (I had emailed you this a few weeks back, but just now realized you couldn’t open attachments, so I am resending). I have a Homemaker Sewing machine, #877-tw. I am certain it isn't worth money. All I seek is the threading diagram and how to put the tension assembly back on correctly. I have printed similar diagrams from various types of machines, but none seem to be just right. My lower thread always knots up, no matter what the tension is set to. Also, I'm afraid I might have messed up my tension switch, as I unscrewed it, and had to put the discs, spring, dials and screw back together. Something just doesn’t seem right. Hopefully, it is just the way I am threading it. I have attached a pictures of the machine and the assembly pieces, as I have read, those are what you normally require. If it happens that you can’t help me, would you please let me know, as I am very anxious to find help. Thank you very much for your time!

Bobbie
AnswerDear Bobbie,

From the pictures that you sent me, I can tell that you are missing one spring from the tension assembly, however, I can assist you on how to re-assemble it without the spring and you will not notice any difference in your stitches. First, 1 and 2 together with the round edge facing each other. Then number 4 with the cup side facing out, then 3 with the large end of the spring facing inward. Next comes 6 with the point facing up, then 5 and finally 7. I have attached a threading diagram. It is not the same machine as yours, however, it is the same threading pattern. This should help. Let me know how you make out.

QuestionPlease Help
Hi,
I have a 197? model,Singer sewing machine, the thread started bunching up under the material,I was told that reason is cause the bobbin area needed cleaned, so I tore apart the bobbin compartment and cleaned it and put it all back together know the bobbin casing will not move at all. Can you please help my sewing machine problem?

AnswerIf the bobbin case area moved before you took it apart, the problem is how you put it back together. Take it apart again, make sure that the bobbin case area moves while it is apart, then carefully reassemble. If you are lost as to how to put it back together again, send me a photo with the parts numbered and I will tell you step by step how to put the pieces back together.

QuestionElna SU Tension Adjustment
I just won an Elna SU from eBay but it didn't come with an instruction manual. It seems to work fine except that the lower thread tension needs to be tightened a little bit. This machine does not have a removable bobbin housing like my old familiar Singer where tension is adjusted by simply tightening the little screw on the side of the housing. The upper tensioner is already at the minimum adjustment to balance the lower tension but sometimes I need more adjustment. Is there anything I can do to tighten the lower tension a little bit more ? Thank you.
AnswerYou don't adjust tension with the bobbin case or the top tension unit on any Elna SU. That is the reason that there are red markings on the bobbin case and the top tension unit. These machines tensions were adjusted by feed timing. It is a trial and error type of adjustment. If you feel like you are up to it, respond back to me with a photo of the bed of the machine with the cover removed and I will e-mail you back with the adjustments.

QuestionI Just Had it Serviced!
Dear industrial sewing machine man:

About 3 months ago, I had my Brother xl-3022 sewing machine service by
a repairman. The needle wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread. He told me that it was the timing change and fix it. It cost me 85.00. He said that the cause was that I was using heavy material and that my machine was not built for heavy material. So I haven't use any heavy material since. The other day, I was sewing and stopped to go to the store. I came back
and started to sew, but the needle wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread again. I guest the timing if off again. I can't afford to pay 85.00 again so soon. I don't understand what is cause this to happen when I haven't used a heavy material
since it was last repair. This there instruction that I can get to fix timing changes? And what could be cause this to happen so soon after being repaired. This is my third machine and this never happened to any of the other machines before.
Can you help me.

Thank You,

Sharon
AnswerDear Sharon,

There is no information on how to time your machine, however if you would take the bobbin case out of the machine, take the race cover off- tilt the machine on it's back, leave the hook in the machine, turn the handwheel so that the needle is in it's lowest position and send me a picture of the machine after following those steps. From there, I can tell you whether or not your machine is out of time as well as how to correct the problem.

QuestionBroken Piece-

I have a Singer Touch and Sew Zig Zag 648 Model. And recently, when I try to sew, the needle keeps hitting the bobbing casing. And I noticed that a round black object was broken under which stops the last wheel underneath from pushing the bobbing case around for the needle to pass through to the thread under.

Please could you tell me what the black rugger is called?

Thanks
AnswerDear Estella,

You have a broken gear in your machine. I have the gears available if you would like to replace it yourself ($14.95 + shipping) or you could send your machine to me and I would repair your machine for $29.95 + the cost of shipping. Let me know.

how to put it back on in the right order. Can you help me?

Thanks,

QuestionViking Past Warranty
It's pass warranty and I can't send it out for repairs. My Vikings motor started racing and gave out a smell. I quickly unplugged the machine.
I also noticed that the wheel that moves the needle up and down is very stiff.
I'm also having problems locating a shop that will take a look at the my machine.

Thank you for your assistance.

QuestionRe-Assembling Tension Unit
Oops! I managed to unscrew my tension unit so that it fell in pieces and I don't have a manual and can't figure out how to put the pieces back together. The machine is a straight stitch Singer from @50's. It has the standard looking tension assembly for that era machine. The number on the front plate is AM621596. Would you happen to have an assembly diagram?
AnswerLay out the parts that you have, take a picture of it and paste the picture onto the e-mail (I cannot open attachments). When I get the picture I will diagram it for you on how to put it back together.

QuestionViking 6010
I have been sewing fine with my machine until I tried to do a zig-zag stitch. Once I changed the settings, the machine will only run backwards. I did notice that as I turn the stitch length knob, the reverse feed button also turns in. How can I fix this ?
Thank You
Sally
AnswerDear Sally,

It sounds like your machine is frozen to me. I don't know where the bind is, so it would be very hard for me to help you correct this problem through an e-mail. I suggest taking it to a qualified mechanic.

QuestionBobbin Wheel Stuck
Dear industrial sewing machine man:

I cannot get my Kenmore Ultra-Stitch 12 bobbin wheel loose for threading my bobbin. Even taking the small screw out of the smaller wheel does not loosen it. What can I do to correct this problem?
Thanks for your help,
Mildred
AnswerDear Mildred,

It is going to take a lot of strength to get it loose. I would tap it with a hammer and a screwdriver, however, I don't want you to break it by accident. Be very careful but forceful at the same time. Sorry to not be able to give you a better answer.

QuestionBobbin on Singer 1036
Hi
When I try to thread the bobbin on singer 1036 it keeps winding underneath the bobbin. I have the release set, the foot up, the thread looped on the side and the thing that holds the bobbini n pushed over to center. I have successfully wound it before. What is going on?

Thanks
Leslie
AnswerDear Leslie,

If you look at your bobbin case, you'll see a piece of metal that is near the number one on the bobbin case. It's probably pressed too tight against the plastic bobbin case. With a thin screw driver, wiggle it in between the metal piece and the plastic bobbin and separate it about the distance of a matchbook. This should fix your problem If you have any questions as to where this piece is located, do not hesitate to call me. Let me know how you make out.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:

Hi
I tried that and it didn't help much but I finally got the bobbin wound. Now the problem is that there is no tension in the thread coming from the bobbin. Is this related or just a new headache?

Thanks for your attention.

RE:

Dear Leslie,

It is a new headache. You have thread caught in the bobbin case spring, which you cannot see unless you take the bobbin case out of the machine. I suggest taking your machine to a local repairman.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:

Figures...I am pretty mechanical though. Is there somewhere I can find instruction on how to remove and replace the bobbin case?

Thanks for your time...Leslie

RE:

Dear Leslie,

I can give you instructions on how to take it apart, however, it is not an easy job and I cannot assume responsibility for you putting it back together properly.

Take the base off of the machine (there should be six screws), make sure that you take the screw out by the cord input. When you have the base of the machine off, underneath the slide plate is a box-shaped spring. Pull the spring down with your fingertip, look to the right of the spring and there is a hole, and there is a set screw inside of that hole. Release that set screw, then move to the bobbbin case area.

On the right hand side of the bobbin case area, there is a silver metal piece. On the back of the peice there is a small circular nut- remove that nut- DON'T LOSE IT. In the front of the metal piece, there is another screw which lift out with the plate because you loosened the set screw. Now you can remove the bobbin case, remove the thread underneath the spring, and follow these directions in reverse to reassemble.

The distance between the metal piece and the bobbin case is adjusted by the front screw that you lifted out with the metal piece. Adjust it to about the thickness of a matchbook cover, which is a distance that you cannot see, you have to FEEL that distance. When it is adjusted to that thickness, which can be felt by jiggling the bobbin case back and forth, you must tighten the set screw to secure that adjustment. Good luck.

Thank You,
Industrial Sewing Machine Man

RE:

Thanks a lot for all your help! I followed your instructions and I am up and running...AMAZING! I really appreciate it.

QuestionSmoking Motor!
Hi:

I have a Kenmore sewing machine model 158.480 of some vintage which apparently needs motor work or replacement. It is turning but is kicking out smoke indicating that something inside the motor is burning.

Any solutions other than replacing the motor?

Thanks.

Stan
AnswerDear Stan,

Clean and change the carbon brushes. If it is a totally enclosed motor where you are unable to get at the carbon brushes, run it in a safe area because sparks will fly out of the machine- and blow out the motor.

QuestionSticky Situation
I have a Singer Model 237 that has been sitting in a closet for about 25+ years. When I plugged it in the motor ran, the belt slipped, and the machine would not move. I used a little WD-40 and it started to run. Do I need to get Singer Lubricant and oil it properly? Where can I get Singer lubricant? What is the proper oiling or maintenance for this machine? The belt is old and has #193066 on it. Is that the right belt size and number? Where can I get a belt? About how old is this machine? It looks in good shape. Is it worth the effort?
Thanks, Wayne
AnswerDear Wayne,

Since the WD40 is a slovent it would definately break up the old oil. Singer oil is a lubricant. Your machine needs to be lubricated as well. I suggest that any sewing machine be serviced with the proper materials. Your machine is approx. 30-35 yrs. old. It was a great machine when it was purchased, which by the way in 1970 was $88.00, and has many many years left in it. I would advise you that it is worth your effort to bring this machine back to life. We can supply with any parts for your machine and they are all available on www.sewingandvac.com If you have any other questions, please feel free to either e-mail me or call us at 1-800-544-5858.

QuestionSinger Merritt Tension Problem
This machine belongs to my stepdaughter she is about to sew brocade silk material, however
the tension on this machine is off, it causes the bottom thread to bunch up and the machine will stop working. I provided a ball point needles and silk thread to help this situation out, it still causes the thread to cluster. What should to correct tension be for this type of material or is there a special pressure foot or other items necessary to complete this task?

Thanking you in advance for your assistance in this matter

Respectfully

QuestionThreaded Needle Will Not Pick Up Bobbin Thread
Hello,

I'm hoping you can help~ I have a Kenmore, for some reason, the threaded needle will not pick up but bobbin thread. This is a front not top load bobbin. The needle does go through the dogfeet and we have cleaned out the lint, or if there is any we can't see it.

I was sewing with it, it was a bit noisy and the bobbin thread broke. I took it apart thinking the lint may have been what was stopping it, and found a straight pin and a needle tip in the racer housing, but after putting everything back together, the same problem still exists.

Any Ideas?

mary
AnswerDear Mary,

First take the bobbin case out of the machine and turn the handwheel towards you to see if the bobbin hook is moving when you move the handwheel. If it is not moving, you probably have a broken gear in the machine. If it is moving, I would make sure that I have the correct needle in as well as put into the machine properly. Then I would make sure that the machine is threaded correctly. I hope this information helps you.

QuestionStitch Length Indicator Will Not Change
Hi! I recently purchased a Singer 281-3 Industrial machine from an estate.(no manual) It sews just fine with one exception. When I press the button on top to change the stitch length, I can roll the wheel toward me to get to lock but nothing beyond that. The stitch length indicator will not change. I used to own an another old Singer that worked this way. A friend who used to sew professionally told me companies used to alter the machines so operators could not change lengths to increase or affect production. Is this something that could be easily remedied or am I stuck with one stitch length. Thanks for any attention this email receives. Tom in Alaska.
Tom
AnswerDear Tom,

Your machine is jammed in the forward position. You are going to have force the jam out. Push the button down and push the handwheel backwards with all of your might. You really have to bear down and move it- so hard it almost seems as if you are going to break the machine- but you won't.

QuestionNeedle Stuck in Down Position
Hello,
I sure hope you can help.. I have a Kenmore model 158-480 and the needle is stuck in the down position and the hand wheel will not turn.. Which means it won't turn at all.. the pulley that comes out from the motor and holds the belt, they both turn but nothing happens to the hand wheel.. Do you know how I can fix it.. Or did I really mess it up.. Thank You For All Your Time..

Sincerely,

Alanda
AnswerDear Alanda,

You need to take the bobbin case out of the hook, then take the ring that holds the hook assembly in place apart. Once you do this, you will see that the needle is jammed hard against the hook assembly. Loosen up the set screw that holds the needle in place and remove the hook. Clean out the area and this should take care of the jamming of the sewing machine.

QuestionTension Knob Fell Off

I have a sears Kenmore sewing machine model 148.12071. The tension knob on it has fallen off, could you tell me if this repairable or not? This machine is near new and not used much, it is also all metal and I don't like the newer machines since they are now all made of plastic.

QuestionMotor Problems
dear sewvac doc,
my machine has been in storage for the last year and a half, and now that i brought it out, it won't run. at first, the motor made no noise and didn't move. after taking apart my entire machine and removing the motor cover, it makes a little bit of noise and moves just the slightest bit. i even got it to spin for a little while before it slowed down and then again to a complete stop. for the last few hours i've been stepping on the pedal trying to get it to start. it still hasn't done much yet. what should i do? i really need to finish my project before saturday. would it be cheaper for me to buy a motor, or a new machine? help!!
aloha, jody
AnswerDear Jody,

I would advise you not press on the foot pedal or your motor will burn out completely. Disengage the motor belt from the motor- if the motor runs freely, then your machine just needs to be oiled and serviced. If the motor is still frozen, that means you need a new motor or a new machine- it would probably be more advisable to buy a new machine rather than a new motor for that make and model.

QuestionStill Sews, But...
I have an old Brother Charger 651 that I had in for service. When it came back the needle was no longer in the center position but all the way to the left. It still sews but its very distracting. I"m sure the needle is inserted correctly and all screws etc. are tight. When I went to return it to the service center they had gone out of business. Is there any way to adjust it myself so that the needle is in the correct position?
AnswerDear memg310,

I would not advise you to try to change the needle positioning at this stage of the game. In order for them to move the needle to a different position, they would have had to change the timing on the machine. If you attempt to move it back to the center position, it will skip and not make a proper zig zag.

If the machine works properly, I would not play with it. This machine is not worth the money or the time. Please advise.

QuestionFrozen Machine
Hi,

My sewing machine sat in the basement for a while. It is not damp there, but when I brought it up, the motor runs but the needle does not go up and down and the foot won' t either. It seems to be frozen. What should I do?

Mary
AnswerDear Mary,

Try completely oiling the machine. Make sure you take out the bobbin, bobbin case, and after oiling it, try to turn it by hand. If this does not free it up, you may need to take it to a local mechanic. You could always send it to us and we would give you a free estimate before we do any work. Please advise.

QuestionNeedle Scratching Metal Part
I received a White 750 sewing machine as a gift (novice sewer--it's been years since I used a sewing machine) and I tried couple of sample stitches (on thick fabric--probably using wrong needle in the first place). The fabric got stuck and so I cleared it. When I attempted to sew again, I heared a grinding noise. I removed the plate and the shuttle hook (?) and it seems that the needle is scratching the metal part (right under the shuttle hook). Did I mess up the alignment? The scratches are at the same spot everytime I run the machine. Please help!! I would like to get back at sewing again (or at least attempt to)!!

Thanks,
CCL

I would suggest changing the needle and re-threading the machine. IThat should correct the problem. It doesn't sound to me as if you have any alignment problems.

QuestionViking 230 Won't Sew Reverse Stitch
Hi,
My Viking/Husqvarna 230 won't reverse stitch and the yellow stitch indicator won't move even though the stitch selector knob moves.
Can you help?

Thanks, Ana
AnswerDear Ana,

You have two problems:

1: There is a flexible rod that connects from the indicator to the pattern changer on your machine which is either out of place or broken.

2: Either your reverse mechanism is jammed or the reverse gear needs to be replaced. You may have to take this somewhere and have a mechanic look at it. If you cannot find someone locally to do this for you for a reasonable amount, we can do the work for you, the cost being a free estimate + the cost of shipping.

QuestionMy Machine is Making the Stitches Without the Thread
My Singer machine was working perfectly, but now, for some reason, my machine won't sew. Everything works but when I go to sew,the needle and feed moves, but it won't make stitches. The thread won't catch the bobbin thread. The only way I can explain it is that it makes the stitches without the thread basically. I am confused because this has never happened before and everything seems in order. I've threaded the needle dozens of times and changed the bobbin and replaced the bobbin. I've checked the tension and changed the needle too. I'm not sure what else to do. I also hear some sort of clicking sound everytime the needle goes down to make a stitch. I can't remember if it has always done that. Is there something stuck in my machine that is causing this to happen? Do you think you can help me? Thanks very much.

Amanda
AnswerDear Amanda,

Your machine is out of time. If you call my tech help line at 1-732-335-8902, I can walk you through the adjustment. Make sure that you have the proper tools when you call- hex keys, philips head screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, have the bottom of the machine off, have the bobbin case out of the machine, and make sure that there is a new needle in the machine. Give yourself about thirty minutes for the adjustment.

QuestionCan I Replace the Timing Belt?
Hello,

I am needing to replace the belt on my Singer touch and sew 750. They call it the timing belt. I thought it would be an easy fix, but, it appears that I have to take the cam (I think) out of the machine to replace the belt. How is this done exactly? I would take the machine to the a dealer for servicing, but, I just don't have that kind of money at the time, and I am quite mechanincally inclined, but, I have never done this type of repair before. I have 3 other machines, from which I work on every time there is a problem. I just don't want to do anything wrong to it to mess the machine up for future use? Any suggestions?

Thanks very much!

Jeremy P.
AnswerDear Jeremy,

This is quite an extensive job. The top shaft has to come out, then when you put it back, 75% of the machine needs to be readjusted. Since this is all touch and feel, remembering and site and experience, I do not suggest replacing the timing belt on your own. If you would like, you could send me your machine, the foot control, and the timing belt, and I will do the job for you for $29.99 + the cost of shipping. Let me know.

QuestionProblem with Stitch Formation on Industrial Singer
We're have a problem with proper stitch formation on lockstitch machines. My wife sews coated canvas bags for a woman at church. The problem is loose and wavy stitches on the bottom thread. She sews, as I said, coated light canvas with V-69 nylon thread and a denim #16 or universal #18 needle. We use two singer 15-91's mostly, but the problem shows up on the other machines as well. I can pretty much keep her sewing, oiling mostly and an adjustment here and there, but I can't seem to correct this one. The thread is coarse so I have the bobbin case tension light but correct I think, and I have to crank the upper tension up pretty high to pull the lower thread up through the material to form a good stitch. What makes the bottom thread tight? Isn't it the action of the feed dogs and the upper thread pulling? How can the top thread look good and tight but the bottom loose and wavy? Any help, please. Should I try a leather needle to open up a better hole for the thread to come through?

Mark
AnswerDear Mark,

You are going to have to tighten the lower tension. Make sure that the feed dogs are up high enough and loosen the pressure on the foot.

QuestionExcessive Thread on Bobbin Side
Hello,

I have an inexpensive, basic Singer 57815 and am having problems with excessive thread on the bobbin side. I don't know whether it's tension-related (have tried different tension settings), or the bobbin itself(wrong bobbin, or threading?). I've read your Q&As related to this problem, but haven't figured out why mine doesn't work correctly. The needle picks up the bobbin thread fairly easily, but the problem is evident after just a few inches of sewing because there is so much wasted thread on the bobbin side of the material. Please advise.

Thanks, Yin-Ching
AnswerDear Yin-Ching,

Re-thread the top of your machine. Make sure that the presser foot is in the up position while threading your machine. Reset the tension back to where it was when you began, probably 4. Also, make sure that you are using a 66-class bobbin case as well as inspect the bobbin case itself to make sure that it is not broken. Any of the above could cause the excessive thread problem that you are having.

QuestionCannot Change the Stitch Length
Dear industrial sewing machine man,

I am perplexed. I recently bought an older kenmore machine model 1755. I was tickled because it was so similar to the one I've had for years, and it appears to be well cleaned and maintained and it had all the extras with it. I used it for weeks without a problem. I finally used a cam to try a fancy stitch and it worked beautiful. But now when I removed the cam and reset the machine to sew again, (rechecked about 10 times), I can't change the stitch length!!! It is stuck on the tinest stitch possible. The funny thing is it's sewing perfect, but I can't change length. I have checked tensions, changed threads , I even changed the needle. I've cleaned it again and oiled it, and tried every trick I've learned over the 40 plus years I have been sewing. I am stumped!!!!!!!!!! Any Ideas? By the way the zig zag works, but also with this tiny stitch. Please tell me it's something stupid that I haven't tried. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you Dori
AnswerDear Dori,

It sounds to me as if the stitch length is frozen. Try taking the lid off and blowing hot air with a hair dryer down towards the stitch length unit. That should free it up if that is the problem.

QuestionNeedle Comes Unthreaded
I have an old Singer sewing machine, model #15. When I begin sewing, after 6 or 8 stiches the needle comes unthreaded. Do I not have the machine threaded properly?

Thanks!

Teresa
AnswerDear Teresa,

There is most likely a burr or a chip in the bobbin case area (bobbin case, hook, needle plate) which is causing your thread to break. Find the burr and file it down with an emery board.

QuestionViking Presser Foot Won't Move
Hi,

I was using my Viking 500 computerized machine yesterday with no problem & suddenly when I used the level to put the presser foot down, it wouldn't move! I tried to take a look inside to see if something is jammed, but I can't tell. Should I take it to a mechanic or try to fix it myself? Any idea if it's a simple fix?

thanks!
Neeraja
AnswerDear Neeraja,

Take the back of the machine off and inspect to see what is stuck. If there is something stuck, remove it. Let me know.

QuestionXL-5500 Problem
I recently bought a brother xl-5500 sewing machine. I was trying to make a purse and the stitches wouldnt come out right on the back side. So I decided to adjust the tension. The manual told me to loosen the bobbin screw and see if that works. Well it really screwed everything up and I dont know what to do, help.

maya
AnswerDear Maya,

Re-tighten the bobbin case to as close to as when you started as you can. Then, re-thread the top of your machine and your problem should be solved. If you need any further assistance, let me know.

QuestionTrying to Get Sewing Machine Started
I recently purchased a White Number 8 Long Shuttle sewing machine. After getting it home and oiling it per the small manual. i tried to sew with it but it seems to start out with the first stitch then skips all others. I end up with a big knot on the back of the material. It has this shuttle bobbin holder. I don't know if im threading it wrong or what or is it just to old. The motor runs very good. I don't even know how old this machine is but after looking on the internet it seems it might be older than i think. there is a serial number on the base of the machine(8M11557). I never did find the exact one that i have then i found your web site and maybe you can help me with this problem. I'm going to send some photos of the machine.

Thanks for your time and reply.

Respectfully submitted,

Thomas R. Manns
AnswerDear Officer Manns,

From what you have described, it sounds as if one of two things is happening: Either you are not threading the top thread properly, or there is not enough tension on the top thread. Re-thread the machine, tighten the top tension, and see if you find success. Let me know how it turns out.

QuestionJuki 98E Skipped Stitch
We have an almost new Juki 98e. It will randomly skip a stitch when using it on a quilting frame. We had a repair man check it out and he
said everything looks good. He checked the timing, lube and needles. Do you have remedy?
AnswerDear Delane,

Move the hook closer to the needle- that will solve your problem.

QuestionIndustrial Machine Running Backwards
Dear sir or ma'am,

I recently installed a used 110 volt motor on an industrial sewing machine stand. When I started to the machine it ran backwards. I know that it is possible to change the wiring to reverse the direction, I just don't remember which wires to change. Can you help? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

QuestionSinger 2662R Problem
Hi, I've got a Singer 2662R and I only had it for about three months before it started to act up on me. I switch needles for different materials and
adjust tension and use the right thread. Then, after oiling it, the top thread and needle wouldn't catch the bobbin thread. Don't know why or how, but the timing got thrown off (that's what the lady at Walmart told me). My automatic needle threader also stopped coming down. Please help; I can't afford to pay $40 to have someone turn a nob inside my machine!

Desperate student
AnswerDear Desperate Student,

Make sure that the needle is inserted correctly in your machine and is as far up in the needle bar as possible. If that doesn't work, I would need you to call me on my tech support line in order for me to be able to help. The tech support number is 732-335-8902.

QuestionStitch Former Stuck!
The A stitch former is stuck in my Viking 6440. I can't find anyone here interested in looking at it. Is there a way to get it out myself?

Thanks

Elaine
AnswerDear Elaine,

You are going to have to pry the A symbol from the cam cartridge and drip some oil into that hole and then heat it with a hair dryer, while gently tugging and twisting until the cam breaks free. Make sure that your machine is in the position set to release cams, which is the little dot on your pattern selector. Let me know if you need anything else.

QuestionTiming or What?
I have a juki lu-562 it's ran fine for along time, but now it won't sew it'll pick up the bobbin thread, but won't sew after that, I don't have a book to know how to adjust it. It jammed up a couple of times leaving alot of thread around the bobbin case. also I'm not sure if the take up spring is working properly. can you help?

Thank you lynn
AnswerDear Lynn,

I would try the simple things first- check to see that your needle is in the proper way with the groove of the needle on the outside and the scarf on the inside closest to the hook. Next, check to make sure that the safety clutch has not popped, meaning when you are turning the handwheel, the hook is also turning. If the machine still does not work, it is possible that the machine is out of time and you will need to take it to a mechanic. I do have a book for your machine, and can sell it to you, however, if it is the timing, I do not recommend self servicing this machine.

QuestionJones VX880 Problem
To whom it may concern,

I have recently been given a Jones VX880 sewing machine and I was told that it has been fully serviced recently. I threaded the machine up, and did a couple of test run stitches just to get familar with the settings (I do not have the original manual that goes with machine) and everything appeared fine. I then tried to sew the same type of material with the same thread etc and the thread then started to break. I then re-threaded the machine and I then noticed that when I put my foot on the pedal the only mechanism which was moving was the handle you turn to move the needle up and down. However, the handle was just spinning round and no needle movement. The needle which I have been using is a Regular 130/705H

Hopefully, any information you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.

Kind Regards,
Miss Campbell

AnswerDear Miss Campbell,

It sounds to me like your clutch is in neutral. The way to remedy this problem is to look inside the handwheel. The inside of your handwheel could have several different configurations. If there is a smaller wheel inside the handwheel, tighten it. If there is a button inside the handwheel, push it. And if the bobbin winder is on, turn it off. If this doesn't help you, I will need to see a picture of the machine and the handwheel to be more specific and help you.

QuestionBobbin Thread Getting Caught
I am having trouble with bobbin thread getting caught on bobbin latch and not completing a stitch. I have taken the bobbin/case and shuttle apart and reassembled several times. Thought I had the problem fixed, then started doing this again. I had sewed for approx 10 min. , stopped for about 2 min. then returned to machine only to have it knot up underneath fabric again. I have consulted local shop by phone and told it is the timing and will be a $55 repair. Would dearly love to avoid such a costly repair. Any suggestions?
AnswerDear Maestroh9,

I do not believe that your machine is out of time. This may be a case of something very simple. I would recommend that the first thing that you do is change your needle to a new one and re-thread your machine making sure that your presser foot is in the up position and then make sure that after you put the thread through the tension assembly, you put the presser foot down and gently pull on it to make sure that you have the proper tension. If this doesn't fix your problem, give me a call. 1-800-544-5858.

QuestionSinger 1036 Problem
I have a Singer creative stitch drop in bobbin machine that I acquired recently that is in remarkable shape considering its age, timing, tension etc were all in good shape but I can’t get the bobbin to wind. Any ideas about what I should be looking for? I’ve followed the directions to the letter. The machine is clean as a whistle. Stitches great, but hand winding bobbins isn’t my thing nor is buying pre-wind bobbins.

Thanks for your help

Ann Swank

Wichita, Ks

AnswerDear Ann,

First, make sure that when you push the bobbin actuator (the little bulls eye arrow on the lower left of the bobbin case area) that the bobbin should be turning. If it is not, either the actuator itself or its lower cam would need to be replaced. If this is the case, let me know and I can help you get the proper parts to correct the problem as well as assist you in repairing it. If all is well with the actuator, look at your bobbin case and inspect the distance of the plastic on the left with the metal on the right...the space should be about the thickness of a matchbook. Adjust if necessary by putting a thin screw driver between the plastic and metal and separate. If you need further assistance, let me know.

QuestionCan I Correct the Problem Myself?
Hello,

I have a Singer model 5062 and one day i was working on a project and the machine stopped sewing. whenever I press the pedal, the machine buzzes and the needle does not move at all. I tried turning it by hand, but its really hard to turn it forward, yet less harder to turn it backwards. Do I just need oil to fix the problem? Also, this machine is only about a year old, how is it that it broke so quickly? I barely used it at all! I hope I can fix this problem on my own, I would prefer not to pay money to get it professionally fixed if I can do it myself.

Sincerely,
saving money
AnswerDear Saving Money,

First thing, most Singer sewing machines come with a 1-year warranty so if your machine is in fact under a year old, I would take it back to the dealer that you purchased the machine from so that they could repair your machine free of charge. If your machine is not under warranty, I suggest that you first remove all dirt and lint from your machine. Then, oil your machine by removing the covers and observe what parts are rubbing together. Then, put ONE drop of oil on all of those parts. Run the machine while gently helping it along by turning the handwheel toward you. If it does not free up with this suggestion, try heating the machine with a hair dryer. After heating the machine for about 5-10 minutes, try again to free it up my turning the handwheel toward you. This should solve your problem.

Thank you,

QuestionTiming Problem?
I have a husqvarna viking sewing machine and I cannot get the machine to pull the bobbin thread up to start sewing. I've tried different needles, feet, bobbin spindles, looked for lint build up, rethreaded machine repeatedly, and the mechanism still will not pull the thread up to allow the machine to sew. I took the bobbin holder out and removed the metal base plate under the foot, and i noticed the "latching" or "catch" mechanism (that circles around the bobbin and pulls the main sewing thread around to "grab" the bobbin thread) looks out of sequence with the needle going up and down. Is my machine out of time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave
AnswerDave,

To see if your machine is in time, first make sure that the machine is in nuetral position (meaing straight stitch center needle), next turn the handle toward you until the needle is in it's lowest position. Then continue to turn the hand wheel TOWARD you until the needle rises approxamately 1/4". At this point, the tip of the hook should be directly behind the needle. If it is not, your machine is out of time. Give me a call at 1-800-544-5858 if you need any assistance.

QuestionDo I Need a New Controller??
I have a Singer 6233 and when I step on the foot pedal, the machine runs and then slows down to a stop. It happens everytime I push on the foot pedal. Do I need a new foot pedal?

TIA,
Mrs. Platters
AnswerDear Mrs. Platters-

The Singer Model 6233 had an air press speed control. It could be that there is a leak in either the foot pedal or the speed control mechanism that it plugs into. The way that you could determine this is to remove the foot pedal from the machine, put your finger over the hole at the end of the tube, and press the foot pedal. If you feel pressure on your finger from the end of the tube, then you would need to replace the apparatus that it plugs into, or the transducer. If you feel no pressure, then you would need to replace the foot pedal.

Thank,
